Des Moines chosen to host March Madness’ Sweet 16 and Final 8

Thousands of college basketball fans will be heading for central Iowa next month as Des Moines is one of the hosts of the regional N-C-double-A women’s tournament. Chris Connolly, general manager of the Iowa Events Center, says they’re still calculating the projected economic impact of bringing March Madness to the capitol city. “The event itself is absolutely huge,” Connolly says. “As far as predicting the number of people coming through, it’s really hard to predict at this time because we won’t know what teams will play here. We do know, the caliber of teams coming in will be phenomenal and that’s a great selling point.” The three other cities hosting regional tournaments are: Fresno, California; Kingston, Rhode Island; and Raleigh, North Carolina. Des Moines’ Wells Fargo Arena hosted the the first- and second-round games of the N-C-A-A women’s tourney in 2008 and had the highest attendance out of all eight sites. This time around, it’ll be the Sweet 16 and Final Eight rounds being held in central Iowa.

“Some of the likely teams that will be here in Des Moines, those folks travel, your Tennessees, your Yukons, your Baylors, even Notre Dame isn’t too far away,” Connolly says. “The economic impact will be huge. We’ll have people coming in from out of town, buying tickets, staying in the hotels, eating in our restaurants, it’ll be huge.” Pairings will be announced on March 12th and the games in Des Moines are scheduled for March 24th and 26th. “For the two sessions, which would actually be three games, the ticket packages are $45 for seats on the sides and $25 for seats in the end zones,” Connolly says. “That’s a great deal for three games of that caliber.” The regional champion will advance to the Final Four to be held in Denver, Colorado.

RONALD PURDY, 91, of Greenfield, died Fri., Feb. 17th, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fontanelle.  Funeral services for RONALD PURDY will be held 10:30-a.m. Tue., Feb. 21st, at the Greenfield United Methodist Church. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

A family visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4-8pm Mon., Feb. 20th, and a Masonic service (by the Crusade Lodge #386 A.F. & A.M.) will be held at the Greenfield United Methodist Church on Tuesday, during the funeral service.

Burial, with full military graveside rites will be in the Greenfield Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Fontanelle American Legion Carlson Post #547, or the Good Samaritan Society. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

RONALD PURDY is survived by:

His children – Jeanette (David) Kern, of Cedar Rapids; Barbara Purdy-Gates, of Millbrae, CA; Jerry (Roxanne) Purdy, of Adel; & Jack (Peggy) Purdy, of Maryville, MO.

His brother – Durwood (Dorothy) Purdy, of Fontanelle.

His sisters – Linda (Kay) Jensen, and Patricia (Mike) McDermott, all of Fontanelle; & Beth Davis, of Altoona.

9 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, 2 step-great grandchildren, his sisters-in-law, other relatives, and friends.

N. Iowa loses at Virginia Commonwealth 77-68

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Darius Theus scored his only three field goals of the game in the final 4:45 Friday night, and Virginia Commonwealth held on to beat Northern Iowa 77-68. The Panthers (17-12), trying to bounce back from a 63-62 loss to Evansville earlier in the week, got 18 points from Deon Mitchell and 10 from Anthony James. They lost despite shooting 55.6 percent overall (25 of 45) and hitting 9 of 17 3-point shots. VCU was almost as good from deep, hitting 8 of 21 in Richmond.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa teen has become the first girl to win a medal at the state wrestling tournament. Megan Black won yesterday with a 4-0 decision over Brad Kerkhoff in a consolation match of the Class 1-A tournament in Des Moines. She became the first girl to win a contested match at the tournament a day earlier, when she beat Jacob Schmit 10-0. That was followed by a loss to Taylor Curtis in the quarterfinals.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — Marshalltown police have identified the 42-year-old man found dead at the city’s aquatic center, but the cause of his death remains a mystery. Police said yesterday that Theodis Howard was the man whose body was found on Thursday.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — An exceptionally dry winter in the Dakotas and Minnesota has some officials worrying about the potential effects on agriculture. Minnesota’s agriculture and commerce commissioners sent a signal when they warned farmers this week that it’s time to start thinking seriously about buying crop insurance because the deadline is less than a month off.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) —Virginia Commonwealth held on to beat Northern Iowa 77-68. Adel woman sentenced to 20 months in embezzlement

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa woman who embezzled more than $518,000 has been sentenced to 20 months in prison on federal mail and tax fraud charges. Stacey Lynne Gross of Adel was also ordered to pay back the amount she stole from Data Business Equipment, Inc., which employed her as its Des Moines office manager. Federal prosecutors said Friday Gross wrote more than 190 checks for her personal benefit, including to pay for her credit card, mortgage and furniture, jewelry and other items. Prosecutors say the 38-year-old falsified the company’s books to cover up her theft, making it appear that a vendor received checks that used to pay her personal debts. Gross pleaded guilty in November. Company president Waldo Geiger issued a statement thanking investigators and noting insurance covered much of the theft.

Page County thefts remain under investigation

Authorities in Page County are investigating two incidents of theft which were reported to have occurred earlier this month. On Feb. 2nd, Brian Holmes, of rural Shenandoah informed the Sheriff’s Department someone had taken about 30 batteries for vehicles and farm equipment from a pallett in a tree line road ditch on his property. The pallet was visible from the road. The batteries were valued at $180.

And, on Feb. 10th, Doug Ohnmacht, of Essex, reported to the Sheriff’s Department, someone removed four extension cords from a property on J Avenue in rural Essex. Ohnmacht was also missing a grain bin unload auger motor, which was removed from another location in rural Essex. The items were valued at a combined $300.
