ST. LOUIS (AP) — Bronson Arroyo worked eight strong innings and the Cincinnati Reds broke loose with three home runs Thursday for a 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals that averted a three-game sweep. Brandon Phillips, Ryan Ludwick and Drew Stubbs homered. The Reds had connected just once in their previous nine games and began the day with a .211 batting average. The Reds picked on Adam Wainwright (0-3), a 20-game winner in 2010 coming off reconstructive elbow surgery that sidelined him all of 2011. Wainwright is winless in his first three decisions for the first time in his career. He allowed multiple home runs in consecutive starts for just the second time ever. In five innings he surrendered four runs, leaving him with a 9.88 ERA.

UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals are set to place first baseman Lance Berkman on the 15-day disabled list with a calf injury. Berkman says he took a bad step going after a popup, aggravating an injury that sidelined him last weekend. Rather than battle through the injury, the club felt it best that Berkman take enough time to recover. The 36-year-old Berkman is batting .348 with two RBIs in seven games.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The past had threatened to overshadow the future at this year’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials, with gold medal-winning wrestlers from each of the past four Olympic Games plotting comebacks. One of those former champions, Cael Sanderson, won’t make it to Iowa City. That could help open the door for Jake Herbert. The 27-year-old Herbert became the favorite to win the U.S. freestyle spot at 84 kilograms this weekend after Sanderson decided last week that his duties as a father and coach of NCAA champion Penn State were too pressing to leave behind. Herbert lost to Sanderson in the World Team Trials in 2011. He says Sanderson’s absence is little more than one less person to worry about.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Northern Iowa has brought back assistant coach Kyle Green for a third stint with the Panthers. Coach Ben Jacobson says Green is returning to Northern Iowa as an assistant and as its recruiting coordinator. Green spent last season as the head coach at Division Three Wisconsin Eau-Claire, guiding the team to a 15-10 record. Green worked for the Panthers from 2001 to 2003 before leaving for Marquette. He came back to Northern Iowa in 2006 and stayed for six seasons.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa recruit Adam Woodbury has been selected to attend training camp for the USA Basketball under-18 national team. Woodbury, a 7-foot-1 center from Sioux City, will be one of 24 players competing for 12 spots on the team, which is for players born on or after January 1st, 1994. The U.S. team will compete in the FIBA Americas U-18 Championship in Brazil in June. Woodbury led Sioux City East to the Class 4A state title game in 2011 to 2012 and was a three-time first team all-state pick. He’s expected to start next season for the Hawkeyes.
