Johnson Hits First Career Slam as Astros Top Cards Saturday

HOUSTON (AP) — Chris Johnson hit his first career grand slam, Bud Norris continued his dominance of the Cardinals and the Houston Astros beat St. Louis 8-2 on Saturday night to win a fifth consecutive game for the first time since late 2010. The victory earned the Astros their second consecutive home series win with a game to spare. The last time the Astros won five straight was Aug. 22-26, 2010. Norris (2-1) limited the Cardinals to one unearned run on three hits over six innings to improve to 7-2 in 11 career starts against them. Left-hander Jaime Garcia (2-2) was charged with six runs on four hits in six innings for the Cardinals, who lost their season-worst third straight. Garcia walked four and struck out two for his second loss in as many starts.

MILDRED BAIR, 93, a long-time Atlantic resident, died Sat., May 5th, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. A Private family Commital service for MILDRED “MIL” BAIR will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., May 9th, at the Shelby Cemetery, in Shelby. Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation is open at the funeral home from1-4pm Sun., May 6th, and from 8am-5pm Mon. & Tue., May 7th & 8th, with the family meeting friends from 5-7pm Tuesday.

Burial will be in the Shelby Cemetery.

Her daughter – Karen Klevos, of Atlantic.

Her son – Jack Bair, of Hamden, CT.

5 grandchildren & 2 great-grandchildren.

 

3 hurt when wind blows tree onto tent at Iowa park

COUNCIL BLUFFS (AP) — Three people were injured when a tree fell on their tent early Sunday morning, at Lake Manawa State Park in Council Bluffs. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says 23-year-old Alicia Nichols, 25-year-old Timothy Hiers Jr. and 3-year-old Timothy Hiers III, all of the Council Bluffs area, were taken to a hospital after the Sunday morning incident.

According to Omaha television station KETV, Nichols suffered skull fractures, a broken pelvis, back and rib injuries, along with internal bleeding. Tim Heirs Jr. suffered from a torn spleen and internal bleeding. Both were being treated at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Tim Heirs III  was being treated at the Nebraska Medical Center. And while he might be able to come home in a few days, his grandfather said the boy would be on mandatory bed rest, for at least a week.Authorities said the three victims were camping in a tent at the park when high winds swept through the area around 5 a.m., and brought down the tree.

Clarinda woman injured in fiery cycle crash

A collision between a small car and a motorcycle Saturday evening in Montgomery County resulted in one injury and the cycle bursting into flames. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 41-year old Patricia O’Neal, of Clarinda, was flown by Lifenet Helicopter to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha following the crash on Highway 71, at around 5:25-p.m. Officials say O’Nea was traveling north on 71 on a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle and started to turn east onto 155th Street, when she turned back onto 71. 31-year old Jamie Lagassie, of Atlantic, was behind the cycle and and attempting to pass it on the left as it was turning right. When the cycle merged back on to 71, it was hit by Lagassie’s 2012 Ford Focus. O’Neal was thrown from her cycle, which then burst into flames. A report on the womans’ condition was not available late Saturday night. Lagassie was not injured in the crash.

Essex teen injured in Saturday crash

An Essex teen was injured during a single vehicle accident this (Saturday) morning in Fremont County. The Iowa State Patrol says a passenger in a 1999 Plymouth Neon, 18-year old Tabitha Morris, of Essex, was transported by Shenandoah Rescue to the hospital in Shenandoah after the car went out of control, slid across a farm drive and entered a drainage ditch before coming to rest on its left side in the ditch. The accident happened on Highway 2, at around 6:20-a.m., about 1 mile east of Farragut, and took place when the driver of the car, 21-year old Trevor Vermillion, of Farragut, passed out at the wheel. Officials say Morris was not wearing her seat belt. A report on her condition was not available. Vermillion was not injured.

MERLE LA DEANE ROUNDS, 89, of Walnut, died Fri., May 4th, in Council Bluffs. Funeral services for MERLE ROUNDS will be held 11-a.m. Mon., May 7th, at the Monroe Chapel in Walnut. Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home in Council Bluffs has the arrangements. (www.hoyfuneral.com)

Visitation is Sunday 4-6PM at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home & Crematory(1221 North 16 Street, Council Bluffs). The family will receive friends at the Monroe Chapel in Walnut, one-hour prior to the service, Monday.

Interment will be in the Monroe Chapel Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Monroe Chapel, The Omaha Home for Boys, and the Walnut American Legion Auxiliary.

MERLE ROUNDS is survived by:

Her children – Robert Rounds Jr.  & wife Joyce);  Diane Hughes; Christi (Rod) Putnam; Rick Rounds; and Jerry (Lisa) Rounds.

Her sister – Phyllis (Vincent) Hansen.

12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson, her sister-in-law,  a host of other family and friends.

Cass County Extension Seeks Community Input

Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach in Cass County is asking for community input as staff looks ahead to programming for the upcoming year. Kate Olson, Cass County Extension Program Coordinator says they “Really want to get some feedback from local residents on the types of things they would like to see…” offered in the future. From now through the 15th of May, the Extension office has a quick 10-question survey on their homepage (http://www.extension.iastate.edu/cass>) where anyone can take a few minutes to select programs they would like to see happen in Cass County. The survey is also available in paper form at the Extension Office for those who are unable to access it online.

The survey lists many topics under the areas of family life, youth development, agriculture and natural resources, business and community development. MILDRED BAIR, 93, of Atlantic died on Saturday, May 5 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.  A private family committal service for MILDRED BAIR will be held on Wednesday, May 9 at 10:30 AM at the Shelby Cemetery.  Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.
