CWS Finals: Arizona in way of S. Carolina’s 3rd title in row

Sports

June 23rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – South Carolina opens the College World Series finals against Arizona on Sunday night trying to become the first school in 40 years to win three straight national championships. Gamecocks coach Ray Tanner hasn’t announced his starting pitcher. Sophomore right-hander Konner Wade (10-3) will start for Arizona (46-17).  Tanner says the Gamecocks (49-18) are pretty good but aren’t the 1927 Yankees. He adds that it’ takes some luck to reach the finals three years in a row.  The Gamecocks had to replace five regulars from the team that beat Florida in last year’s finals. The last school to win three titles in a row was Southern California in the 1970s.   Arizona this season is batting .330 and averaging seven runs a game.

News

June 23rd, 2012 by Jim Field

On Saturday, June 23, 2012, Duane Weirich rode his World’s Largest Bicycle along the street in downtown Lewis.  The bike stands 18 feet high and 32 feet long.  It was originally built for a RAGBRAI visit through Lewis, but Weirich added a chain system and other modifications to make it a working bicycle.  It looked like a lot of pedaling to get it up the street!  Duane was never in danger of getting a speeding ticket!!!  Click on the thumbnails to enlarge the pictures.

June 23rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Matt Holliday and Allen Craig paced another big game for the St. Louis offense, and Adam Wainwright took advantage of the robust run support in the Cardinals’ 8-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Holliday finished 4 for 5 and drove in a pair of runs, pushing his stat line against Kansas City to 13 for 22 with two homers and eight RBIs in five games this season. Craig added a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs for the Cardinals. Wainwright (6-7) only allowed a bunt single and a broken-bat base hit in the first five innings. He ended up allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over seven. Luis Mendoza (2-4) was responsible for the Cardinals’ first four runs, but the Royals’ relief corps fared just as poorly, letting the game get out of reach in a hurry.
