Hoiberg Earns Highest Honor By The Jaycees

June 26th, 2012 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg was awarded the Ten Outstanding Young Americans (TOYA) award presented by the United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees).

The TOYA award has been presented annually since 1938 and has included such individuals as President John F. Kennedy, President Bill Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden and NFL quarterback Peyton Manning.

The prestigious award is handed out to people aged 18 through 40 who exemplify immense accomplishment and/or leadership in the community.

A native of Ames, Iowa, the 39-year-old Hoiberg returned to his hometown and alma mater to coach the Iowa State men’s basketball team. In just his second season, “The Mayor” led the Cyclones to one of the biggest turnarounds in Big 12 history in 2012. Iowa State tied for third in the Big 12 (12-6) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.

Hoiberg, who was named Big 12’s Co-Coach of the Year in 2012, was an All-American and Academic All-American at Iowa State from 1992-95. He later went onto a successful 10-year NBA career after graduation.

Hoiberg will attend the 74th annual TOYA ceremony this weekend (June 30th) in Des Moines.
