Exira-EHK Joint Board meeting tonight

Members of the Exira and Elk Horn-Kimballton Boards of Education will hold a joint meeting tonight at the High School in Elk Horn. During the 7-p.m. session in the Family and Consumer Science Room, the Board will discuss their goals for 2012-2013, Sports facilities and distribution of games, Activity Account balances and location, and Reorganization.

The reorganization portion of the discussion includes AEA informational meetings, District community meetings, and Whole Grade Sharing versus Reorganization. Along those same lines, the boards of education will discuss the timeline for reorganization, including petitions and voting.

Their next, regular, joint session is slated for 7-p.m. November 27th in Exira.

Several Public hearings slated for tonight in Audubon re: $1.9-million loan agreement

The Audubon City Council will hold a series of public hearings tonight on resolutions pertaining to the  authorization of a combined $1.9 million loan agreement. The funds will be used for several projects, including pool repairs, the airport runway, water plant and tower repairs, and refunding of the Streetscape project.

The Council will also hear from Lucas Billesbach, a representative with the JEO Consulting group, who will speak with regard to the water tower repair and improvement project. Afterward, the Council will act on authorizing the Mayor to sign an engineering agreement with JEO for the project. They’ll also hold a vote on the second reading of a No Parking ordinance, for a portion of the 700 block of North Division Street in Audubon.

The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Audubon City Hall.

JACQUELYN “JACKIE” (SPECHT) CHRISTOPHER, 68, of Anita, died Sat., Aug. 25th, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Memorial services for JACKIE CHRISTOPHER will be held 10:30-a.m. Thu., Aug. 30th, at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Anita has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be from 6-to 8-p.m. Wed., Aug. 29th, at the funeral home, where a Scriptural Wake Services begins at 6-p.m., prior to the visitation.

Memorials may be directed to any local animal shelter.

JACQUELYN CHRISTOPHER is survived by:

Her children – Lynette Specht, of Libby, MT; Cathleen Hansen, of West Des Moines, and Kristine (Chris) Karns, of Anita.

Her sister – Betty (Mike) Crabb, of MO.

Motorcyclist injured in Pott. Co. crash

A motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon in western Pottawattamie County resulted in one person being sent to the hospital in critical condition. According to the Omaha World-Herald, the accident happened at around 1-p.m. Sunday, near 205th Street and Hawk Lane, between Council Bluffs and Underwood. The driver of the motorcycle was taken to Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Additional information is likely to be provided by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, later this morning.

Chiefs cut 14 to get down to 75-man roster limit

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have released 14 players ahead of the NFL’s deadline to reach the 75-man roster limit, including former Kansas tight end Tim Biere. The Chiefs made the cuts Sunday. The deadline is this (Monday) afternoon. There were no major surprises as the Chiefs trimmed their roster following a 44-14 loss to Seattle last Friday night. Kansas City plays its last preseason game against Green Bay on Thursday before a final cut to the 53-man limit the following night. Other players released by the Chiefs were fullback Shane Bannon; defensive backs Dominique Ellis and Jean Fanor; linebackers Caleb Campbell and Dexter Heyman; offensive linemen Justin Cheadle and Cam Holland; defensive end Ethan Johnson; kicker Matt Szymanski; and wide receivers Jeremy Horne, Brandon Kinnie, Zeke Markshausen and Aaron Weaver.

Iowa teen dies when thrown from pickup truck bed

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A 15-year-old Iowa girl died after she was thrown out of the bed of the pickup truck she was riding in. Authorities said Alexi Vaul, of Sioux City, died Saturday after an accident in Dakota Dunes, S.D. Authorities say Vaul was riding in the back of the Chevrolet truck and talking through a window to 16-year-old William Murray, who was driving when the accident happened. The truck hit a curb and left the road, and the impact sent Vaul flying. Vaul suffered fatal injuries. The driver and two passengers riding inside the truck’s cab were not hurt. Murray is from McCook Lake, S.D.

Holliday powers Cardinals past Reds 8-2

CINCINNATI (AP) – Matt Holliday had four hits and four RBIs to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 on Sunday.  Allen Craig homered and drove in three runs as St. Louis handed the Reds just their second series loss in 13 sets since the All-Star break. The Cardinals have won five of six to move within six games of the NL Central-leading Reds.  St. Louis’ 17 hits are the most allowed by Cincinnati in one game this season.  St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright (13-10) allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings. He also hit a batter.

Harlan man arrested on drug charges

The Harlan Police Department reports one person was arrested last Monday (August 20th), on drug charges. Officials say 57-year old Bradley Norton, of Harlan, faces two-counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, and a single count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia charges. Norton was taken into custody after officers were called to a disturbance in the 700 block of Broadway Street.

WINIFRED E. RUDIN, 89, of Atlantic died Sat., Aug. 25th, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. Private family services for WINIFRED RUDIN will be held at a later date.  Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic is in charge of the arrangements.
