Pott. County woman sentenced to 10-years in prison on meth charges

News

February 4th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The U-S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa says a Pottawattamie County woman was sentenced last Friday to 10-years in prison for her role in a methamphetamine distribution ring in western Iowa.  51-year old Susan Lea Combs was sentenced for conspiracy to distribute meth. Judge Ronald Longstaff also imposed a five-year period of supervised release on Combs following her incarceration.

Combs’ co-defendant, 52-year old David Dwayne Mendez, from of Polk County, was sentenced to nine years in prison for his role in the Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine, as well as a four year period of supervised release. Combs and Mendez entered guilty pleas to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine on September 6th, 2012. At the time of their respective pleas of guilty, each admitted that they agreed to sell methamphetamine that was obtained from a source in South Omaha, Nebraska, to individuals in Iowa, particularly in the Council Bluffs and Des Moines areas.

The investigation was conducted by the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Southwest Iowa Narcotics Task Force, Mid-Iowa Narcotics Task Force, and the Polk County Attorney’s Office. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

Iowa’s Campbell leaves program

Sports

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says wide receivers coach Erik Campbell has left the Hawkeyes staff. Ferentz also says D.J. Hernandez has joined his staff as a graduate assistant. He replaces David Raih, who left for a job at Texas Tech. Ferentz didn’t elaborate on the departure of Campbell, who had been with the program since 2008, other than to say Campbell wants to pursue other opportunities. But Iowa’s passing game struggled mightily in 2012, as quarterback James Vandenberg threw just seven TD passes in 12 games.

Hernandez, the brother of New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez, played wide receiver and quarterback at Connecticut. He spent one season at Brown before joining the Hurricanes in 2011. Ferentz says Hernandez with work with the team’s tight ends.

Former Anita elementary student sues CAM district over alleged sexual abuse

News

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A former elementary student in the small western Iowa community of Anita has filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming the school’s principal and superintendent knew a former teacher abused girls and failed to report it. The girl and her mother, who are not named, claim she also was abused. The girl was a student until 2011 at Anita Elementary, one of the schools in the consolidated CAM School District. Last October, 66-year-old former teacher William Foulkes pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor. He received a suspended prison sentence and probation.

The lawsuit filed Monday claims Principal Larry Hunt and Superintendent Steve Pelzer knew about Foulkes’ behavior but allowed him to resign in 2010. Foulkes wasn’t charged until last March. School district attorney Rick Franck,of Denison, said he hadn’t seen the lawsuit Monday afternoon, and therefore couldn’t comment until he reviewed it. Pelzer, Hunt, and Foulkes did not return calls seeking comment.

Western IA Resident Sentenced for Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine

News

February 4th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A United States Senior District Court Judge on Friday, sentenced a Pottawattamie County resident to 10-years in prison on methamphetamine-related charges. 50-year old Michael James Vore received the sentenced for possession with intent to distribute meth. Judge Robert Pratt also imposed a period of eight years of supervised release following Vore’s incarceration.

The U-S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa says in September of 2012, Vore was found guilty by a jury of possession with intent to distribute meth. The evidence at his trial showed that the Iowa State Patrol was conducting an investigation into the possession and transportation of stolen commercial utility trailers in May of 2011. As part of their investigation, members of the Patrol conducted a traffic stop on Vore as he was pulling a suspected stolen trailer behind his pick-up truck. While searching the pick-up truck that Vore was driving, troopers located approximately fifty grams of pure methamphetamine, along with a large stack of United States Currency, a digital scale and notes consistent with the sale of a controlled substance.

The investigation was conducted by the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Southwest Iowa Narcotics Task Force, Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Pottawattamie County Attorney’s Office. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

Sisters power top girls team in Iowa

Sports

February 4th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

MEDIAPOLIS, Iowa (AP) — You could say the girls on the Mediapolis High basketball team are like sisters to each other. And there’s a good chance you’d be right. The Bullettes feature four sets of sisters on a team that is 20-1 and ranked seventh in Iowa for its class. And that doesn’t even count Aubrey Siegle and her sibling, Chloe, the team manager. The girls recently won their conference and could become the first team from Mediapolis to earn a berth in the state tournament in Des Moines since 1987. Senior Allison Hedges says the sisters are often able to guess what they’re going to do because they’ve played together so much.
