Iowa residents can fish for free this weekend

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

June 5th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa residents can fish without a license this weekend. The Department of Natural Resources says the free fishing weekend will run from Friday through Sunday. The event typically is scheduled during a time when bluegills are usually close to shore and aggressive, making it likely novice anglers will have success.

The DNR encourages those catching their first fish to take a photo and send it to the DNR, which will commemorate the event by sending back a certificate suitable for framing and the submitted photo. Information on the first fish program is available online at www.iowadnr.gov/Fishing/MasterAnglerFirstFish.aspx .

All other regulations remain in place during the free fishing weekend.

Chiefs CEO Hunt drops in on mandatory minicamp

Sports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt made a rare appearance at mandatory minicamp Tuesday and walked away pleased with the progress the team has made under new general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid. Hunt has rarely attended practices the past few years, but said in January he wanted to take on a more visible role with the franchise that his late father Lamar founded during the AFL days.

Hunt led the search for coach Romeo Crennel’s replacement, and then hired Dorsey to replace Scott Pioli. So he was keen to see what the Chiefs have been up to since the NFL draft. Former Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil, a longtime friend of Reid, also dropped in on practice. It was Vermeil who helped convince Reid to take the job.

Pollock hit a three-run homer for Arizona, and Willie Bloomquist had four hits in the 4-hour, 53-minute game. Josh Collmenter (2-0) earned the win with four innings of scoreless relief. Heath Bell recorded his 10th save in 12 opportunities. Allen Craig and Shane Robinson homered for St. Louis, which fell to 4-3 on its nine-game homestand. Goldschmidt drove in Gerardo Parra with a one-out, line-drive single up the middle off Victor Marte (0-1), who walked two batters before the winning hit.
