2nd ex-employee sentenced for credit card scam at hotel

News

November 6th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Another former employee has been given probation for using guests’ credit cards for a scam at a Sioux City hotel. Woodbury County court records say 36-year-old Sandra Lalumendre was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison, suspended, and five years of probation. She’d pleaded guilty to one felony count of theft. Prosecutors dropped a credit card fraud charge in return.

Court documents say that from May 14 through Sept. 8 last year, Lalumendre and Ethan Ehlers fraudulently overcharged guests’ credit cards at the Howard Johnson hotel in downtown Sioux City. They’d then force refunds and split the money. The documents say the total was more than $32,700.

Ehlers has been sentenced to three years of probation. The two have been ordered to jointly pay $10,000 in restitution to the hotel.

Extra money for Warren County project not approved

News

November 6th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) — A proposal to spend an additional $3.5 million to build a Warren County courthouse and justice center has fallen short of approval. Officials say nearly 56% of voters supported the measure Tuesday, but it needed 60% of the votes to pass. Warren County Supervisor Aaron DeKock says the result disappointed him, but the project still will go back out to bid in January. Voters approved $29.9 million for the courthouse and justice center in August 2018. The project has been stalled since construction bids came back $7 million over budget. The old courthouse and jail have been torn down.

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) — A northeastern Iowa man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail _ all but seven days of it suspended _ for torturing the family dog and making his children watch a video of the torture. The Buchanan County prosecutor’s office says in a news release that 42-year-old Jason O’Neil Johnson, of Independence, was sentenced Tuesday. He was found guilty by a jury in August of animal torture.

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. (AP) — An Iowa woman charged in the hit-and-run fatal crash that killed a pedestrian in northeastern Nebraska is set to stand trial in the case. The Sioux City Journal reports that 19-year-old Maria Gonzalez-Diego, of Sioux City, waived her right to a preliminary hearing on Tuesday. She now faces arraignment Dec. 3 on charges of vehicular homicide and failure to stop at the scene of a fatality crash in the June 24 death of 62-year-old Antonia Lopez De Ramirez.

RUNNELLS, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials say six people, including children, have escaped a house fire in Runnells. Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Heath Osberg told KCCI the fire broke out Tuesday morning. Several agencies responded, and Osberg says one person was taken to a hospital. Others were treated for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Members and employees of the governing board for Iowa’s public universities could soon be barred from gambling on the college teams they help oversee. A policy proposed by the Board of Regents would bar board members and staff from betting on games involving the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Iowa State Cyclones or the University of Northern Iowa Panthers. The board will consider adopting the policy at its meeting next week.
