Lewis Central edges by Atlantic boys

Sports

December 20th, 2019 by admin

The Lewis Central boys hoops team made a few more plays down the stretch and grabbed a 51-47 win over Atlantic on Friday night at the Atlantic High School. Nile Petersen’s terrific night for Atlantic kept the Trojans right in it til the end. Petersen hit two threes near the end of the first quarter to make it a 1 point game, and then hit a couple big shots late in the 2nd quarter to get the Trojans within two at half 22-20. He followed that up with two more threes in the third quarter, and the game was tied at 34 heading to the final period. Petersen finished with 24 points on the night.

Skyler Handlos was finally able to drop his first two shots of night to start the fourth quarter, but that lead wouldn’t hold up. Lewis Central chipped away until a Logan Jones layup gave them a 49-47 lead in the final two minutes. Atlantic got a look at a three for Bradley Dennis but it was off the mark, and Easton Dermody was fouled during the rebound attempt. He stepped up to the line and knocked down two free throws to seal the Titan victory.

Skyler Handlos finished with 7 points and Grant Sturm had 6 for the Trojans. They fall to 2-4 and will host Winterset on Saturday afternoon for one more game before the holiday break.

Lewis Central was led by 17 points from Logan Jones and 12 from Cole Drummond. The Titans are now 4-1 and off for the break.

Defensive pressure leads Lewis Central past Atlantic girls

Sports

December 20th, 2019 by admin

The Atlantic girls basketball team started the game strong but couldn’t handle the amped up defensive pressure from Lewis Central in the second half of a 57-40 loss on Friday night. Atlantic used their own strong defense to jump out to an early 8-2 lead and carried a five point lead into the second quarter. Lewis Central grabbed a three point edge by halftime and then outscored the Trojans 19-7 in the third quarter to take control of the game. The Titans came out with an intensified full court press in the second half and use various defensive looks to fluster the Trojans. Atlantic finished with 28 turnovers on the night.

Megan Witte was a big factor in the game as well for LC. She scored 14 of her game high 28 points in that decisive third quarter. Isabella Smith had 9 points and Delaney Esterling dropped in 8 for the Titans. They improved to 4-2 going into the holiday break.

Atlantic was led by 14 points from Haley Rasmussen and 11 from McKenzie Waters. The Trojans fall to 4-5 to end the first portion of the season.
