Drought conditions get worse

(Radio Iowa) – The new report from the U-S Drought Monitor shows more counties now showing dry conditions. The Iowa D-N-R’s Tim Hall says the negative outweighs the positive in the report. “We had a little bit of improvement in one part of the state — but mostly we had degradation or increasing drought in other parts of the state,” Hall says. He says the driest area continues to be in western Iowa. “It’s centered around Carroll, Greene, Guthrie and Audubon County and then in the partial counties around there,” Hall says. “Kind of that part of the state, there’s a little bit of D-two drought in Plymouth County up in northwest Iowa. So, those two areas together are the worst parts.”

Hall says the dry conditions have started to spread to the east. “Now there’s exceptional dryness as far east as Linn County, and then also along the river,” according to Hall. “So we’ve got about half the state, a little over half the state is shown in some form of dryness and drought.” Hall says the impact of the dry areas can also be seen in satellite images of the crops. “There’s a tool out there called VegDRI — which also comes from the drought monitor folks — and they’re actually looking at visual indications of stress in vegetation. And that VegDRI map lines up pretty closely with where we’ve seen the precipitation deficits,” Hall says.

He says the good news for the western areas that are dry is the impact right now isn’t hitting water supplies.”I think because of the exceptionally wet couple of years we had coming into this year we’re still doing okay on the groundwater side. Right now it’s primarily an agricultural surface water phenomenon,” he says.  Hall says the precipitation deficit is a concern because we are soon going to be heading out of the wettest months of the year, and could be behind in groundwater going into the winter.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says he will make policy changes after an investigation report detailed racial bias against Black players in his program and bullying behavior by some of his assistants. University of Iowa President Bruce Harreld says the critical report by an outside law firm shows the “climate and culture must and will change within our football program.” Ferentz apologized to former Black players at a news conference and promised to build on changes made in recent weeks to improve their experience. But he said he would retain all of his current assistants, including his son, offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz.

DETROIT (AP) — Trevor Rosenthal pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save since 2017 and the Kansas City Royals beat Detroit 5-3, overcoming Miguel Cabrera’s first multihomer game since 2016. Once a standout closer for St. Louis, Rosenthal has struggled with his health and his effectiveness in recent years, finishing 2019 with a 13.50 ERA in 22 appearances with the Nationals and Tigers. When he retired JaCoby Jones on a grounder to end the game, he gave his glove a little celebratory tap. The Royals have scored 25 of their 31 runs this year in the first five innings, but this time their offense came through late, with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth.

UNDATED (AP) — The Southeastern Conference will play only league games in 2020 to deal with potential COVID-19 disruptions. The decision pushes major college football closer to a siloed regular season in which none of the power conferences cross paths. The SEC’s university presidents agreed upon a 10-game schedule that eliminated all nonconference opponents and is scheduled to begin Sept. 26. The SEC championship game, originally scheduled for Dec. 5, will be pushed back to Dec. 19. The Big Ten and Pac-12 will also play only conference games. The ACC announced plans for an 11-game schedule with one nonconference game.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds is insisting that the state control the return of public school classes next month, saying districts can provide online learning only if coronavirus cases are surging in their communities and state officials consent. The teachers union immediately pushed back, saying the lives of children and teachers are at stake and science not politics should guide decisions. Reynolds has said at least half of K-12 classes must be held in-person and only state education and health officials can grant permission for temporary online learning if a county exceeds 15% coronavirus positivity rate over a two-week period, and at least 10% of students are absent.

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump is facing a rare rebuke from the Republican Party for floating the possibility of delaying the November election. Republican officials from New Hampshire to Mississippi to Iowa quickly pushed back against Trump’s repeated suggestion on Thursday that it might be necessary to delay the November election because of the unfounded threat of voter fraud. He is not allowed, anyway, to delay the election without congressional approval. But there has been little conservative opposition to Trump’s broader push to raise questions about the legitimacy of the Nov. 3 election. And there was no indication that his latest bombshell has undermined his standing among the Republican elite.
