3rd candidate files for Cass County Ag Extension Council

The Cass County Auditor’s Office reports a third candidate has filed to run for a seat on the Cass County Ag Extension Council: Jody Steffen from Griswold has filed papers for one of four seats on the Council, in advance of the November General Election.

Marcy Jo Dorsey and Darrin Petty were previously announced as having filed for a seat on the Council. Candidates have until August 26th to file for the position on the General Election Ballot.

MARY J. MOFFIT, 59, of Stuart, died Aug. 3rd, at home. Cremation has taken place per her wishes, and services for MARY MOFFIT will be held at a later date. Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart has the arrangements.

Villisca woman arrested on a warrant & Theft charge

Sheriff’s Deputies in Page County, Wednesday, arrested a Villisca woman. 43-year old Stephanie Briley was arrested on a Page County Warrant for Failure to appear, and Theft in the 5th Degree. Briley was arrested at the Page County Sheriff’s Office and booked into the Page County Jail, where she was being held on a $300 bond, pending further court proceedings.

Police ID 2 people killed in motorcycle crash in Davenport

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Police in Davenport have identified two people killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend. The Quad-City Times reports that 46-year-old Marvin Cobler, who was driving the motorcycle, and his passenger, 32-year-old Sarah Robertson, died from their injuries in the Saturday afternoon crash. Both were from Davenport.

Police say the crash happened when a Jeep turned in front of the motorcycle around 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say Robertson died Saturday night at an area hospital. Coble died Sunday at an Iowa City hospital.

Unemployment claims drop again

(Radio Iowa) — Unemployment claims are down for the third straight week. Iowa Workforce Development says the number of ongoing unemployment claims dropped by around five-thousand (5,072) in the last week — and are down by nearly 30-thousand claims in the last three weeks. Ongoing claims have dropped by nearly 85-thousand since peaking in the second week of May. First-time unemployment claims dropped around 200 last week to six-thousand-765. First time claims hit a peak of 64-thousand in the first week of April.

IHSBCA releases honorary All-Star Series rosters for 2020

The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released their honorary rosters for the 2020 All-Star Series. The All-Star Series was scheduled to be played beginning August 6th in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Series was canceled.

While the Series may have been canceled, the IHSBCA strongly supports continuing the tradition of the Senior All-Star Series. The Series is an opportunity for many of Iowa’s best seniors to join together to play ball and establish life-long friendships.

The IHSBCA is honored once again this year to recognize our outstanding seniors selected to the 2020 All-Star Series. Team members were selected by the coaches of each team. The rosters consist of seniors from across the state and are split into four teams once again.

The IHSBCA looks forward to resuming games in the 2021 All-Star Series in August 2021.

Republican party Absentee ballot request forms are valid

The Cass County Auditors Office says some residents of the County may have received mail from the Republican party, asking you to fill out the Absentee Request Form. In response to numerous questions over those ballots, officials say:
1. Yes they are real and usable
2. No it will not change your party affiliation
3. It is the same request the Secretary of State will mail out in a couple of weeks.
4. You only need to return ONE form per voter. If you fill this request out there is no need to fill out the one you receive from the SOS.
5. They can be mailed to the Cass County Auditor’s office, put in the yellow drop box outside the courthouse or even hand delivered to office. THEY CAN NOT BE EMAILED!

Please remember if you are concerned with whether or not your request is received, you can check on the Secretary of States website daily! Ballots will NOT be mailed until October 5th.

Tournament of Champions tees up on Friday at AGCC

The 62nd annual Tournament of Champions will tee it up on Friday at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club and continue through Sunday for the 54 hole event. We’ll have coverage all weekend long on KJAN.

The 2020 edition currently has 38 golfers competing in the Championship Division, 23 players in the Senior Division which is available to players age 50 and over, and 19 players in the Super Senior Division which is available to players age 65 and over.

In the Championship flight Nathan Zimmerman of Treynor will look to defend his title. Zimmerman won the tournament on the final hole in 2019. Zimmerman birdied the 18th to come from one shot back to a one shot victory. He shot a weekend total of 6-under 200 to grab the win with rounds of 66, 69, and 65. Jared Koch of Denison was the runner-up last year with a 5-under 201 total for the weekend. A total of 7 past champions will be in the top division for this year’s tourney.

Darron Baker of Eagle Grove Golf Club will be aiming for a third straight title in the Senior Division. He shot a weekend total of +11, 217 to win the tournament by two shots last year over past champion Rick Thompson.

The Super Senior Division was decided by a playoff in 2019 with Jim Mullenix edging out Arnie Leistad. The two Atlantic residents shot +9, 215 for the weekend before the sudden death playoff.

Spectators are always welcome and Tournament Co-Director Matt Mullenix said there will be food and drink available on the course.

A-PD working to collect school supplies for Cass County students

A coordinated effort between the Atlantic Police Department, the Salvation Army and Walmart, aims to collect school supplies for school children in Cass County. A school supply donation drop box will be located at Walmart in Atlantic, from Friday, August 7th through Sunday, August 9th.  The collected school supplies will be distributed, along with backpacks, to all school in Cass County. Emergency Meals Available to Seniors in your community

Connections Area Agency on Aging, dedicated to keeping the senior population safe amid COVID-19, says they offer frozen and shelf-stable meals that will be delivered to a senior’s door. The meals can be ordered in increments of 5 and delivered on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Care packs are also available which includes toilet paper, paper towels and other non perishable food items. There is a suggested contribution of $3.75 per meal, all Connections AAA consumers are given the opportunity to contribute towards the goods and services they receive.

If you are or know of a senior in need of meals, please contact the Connections Area Agency on Aging office at: (800) 432-9209. All items will be prepared and delivered out by individuals using face masks and gloves and utilizing the 6-foot distance rule.
