Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Tyler O’Neill hit a two-run double to end a no-hit bid started by Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller, and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to beat the Pirates 5-4. Keller threw 84 pitches over six no-hit innings and was pulled from the game leading 4-0, but the Cardinals scored five runs off relief pitchers Geoff Hartlieb and Sam Howard in the seventh. O’Neill broke up the no-hit bid and keyed the inning with his bases-loaded double against Howard. St. Louis improved to 25-24 and is a game ahead of Cincinnati and Milwaukee for second place in the NL Central. The top two teams in each division advancing to the expanded postseason.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Corbin Burnes threw six solid innings of four-hit ball, Ryan Braun hit a three-run homer in Milwaukee’s four-run eighth and the Brewers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0. Burnes is continues to be the best starting pitcher on the Brewers’ staff. He is 4-0 in his last five starts with 47 strikeouts and six walks in that span. Against the Royals, he struck out nine.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten’s third football schedule of the 2020 season is highlighted by Michigan-Ohio State on Dec. 12, the final day of the conference’s regular-season and the latest date the rivals have ever played. The Big Ten released an eight-games-in-eight-weeks schedule that will start the weekend of Oct. 24. The opening weekend features Nebraska at Ohio State, two teams that were at the forefront of the grassroots push to play fall football in the Big Ten. In Week 2, Ohio State will play at Penn State on Halloween.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Health officials say a Chiefs fan who tested positive for COVID-19 one day after attending the season opener was allowed into a lower level box seat without a negative test through a lapse. The Kansas City Star reports that the fan should have been tested for COVID-19 before being admitted to the box, per the Chiefs policy, which applies only to those sitting in suites, including the lower level field boxes. Kansas City Health Department spokesman Bill Snook said the agency is working with the Chiefs, who are responsible for the testing, to strengthen the protocol.

Big Ten schedule: IA vs Purdue the week of Oct. 24th

Sports

September 19th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten has released the schedule for its eight-week football season that will start the weekend of Oct. 24. Week 1 features Nebraska at Ohio State, two teams that were at the forefront of the grassroots push to play fall ball in the Big Ten. Michigan will play at Minnesota in the Little Brown Jug rivalry to open the season. The Iowa Hawkeyes will open their season at Purdue and finish the regular season hosting Wisconsin.

In Week 2, Ohio State will play at Penn State on Halloween. The regular season concludes as usual with the Buckeyes and Wolverines facing off on Dec. 12. Michigan and Ohio State have played 103 times, but never later than November.

The Big Ten championship game will be played Dec. 19 in Indianapolis, matching the east and West Division champions. The conference has said it will give all its teams the opportunity to play on Dec. 19. The tentative plan is to match teams with similar finishes in the respective division standings.

So far, there will be no ticket sales to the general public. Only families of players on a school-by-school basis will be allowed. The Big Ten says decisions on its other fall and winter sports will be announced soon. Last month the Big Ten decided against playing football in the fall because of concerns about COVID-19. It reversed that decision this week.
