UNDATED (AP) — The NFL postponed this week’s game between New England and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs after “positive COVID-19 tests on both teams.” Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton and Chiefs practice squad quarterback Jordan Ta’amu were both added to the NFL’s COVID-19 reserve list released on Saturday afternoon. The NFL says the game originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon will be played Monday or Tuesday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Shane Illingworth threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns, Chuba Hubbard ran for 145 yards and two more scores, and No. 17 Oklahoma State was able to rest its starters the final 20 minutes of its 47-7 blowout of Kansas on Saturday. Tylan Wallace had nine catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns, and Braylon Johnson had four catches for 74 yards and the other passing TD, as the Cowboys (3-0, 2-0 Big 12) built a 31-0 lead by halftime and never looked back. Kansas (0-3, 0-2) finished with just 193 yards of total offense.

UNDATED (AP) — Pete Rose and others around the baseball world are remembering Bob Gibson, the great St. Louis Cardinals pitcher who died Friday at age 84. Gibson posted more than 250 wins and 3,000 strikeouts, and was always at his best in October, when he was dominant in the World Series. Gibson was known for his fierce and fearsome presence on the mound, and had a reputation for knocking down hitters and plunking them with pitches. After his career, Gibson contended that “I didn’t do half the things they said I did.”

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Eric Gray and Ty Chandler combined to rush for 195 yards and scored touchdowns to lead No. 21 Tennessee to a 35-12 victory over Missouri. The victory was the Vols (2-0) eighth in a row, tying them with Notre Dame for the most among Power 5 teams. Connor Bazelak relieved Shawn Robinson at quarterback in the second quarter or Missouri (0-2), but the Tigers could still only muster one touchdown. Jarrett Guarantano played a mistake-free game for Tennessee, completing 14 of 23 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. He also converted on three fourth-down runs in the first quarter and had two short rushing touchdown.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Deuce Vaughn had a rushing touchdown and another receiving, Will Howard threw for 173 yards and a score and Kansas State held off Texas Tech for a 31-21 win. Up 24-21 with two minutes left, Howard found Vaughn across the middle on third down for a 70-yard touchdown pass to seal the win. Henry Colombi threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns, Xavier White added 113 yards rushing and a score on 12 carries for Texas Tech, which lost its ninth game in 10 tries against the Wildcats. Both starting quarterbacks spent more time in the locker room than the field after suffering injuries in the first half.

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Tony Schumacher powered to his first No. 1 qualifier since 2018, breaking the track speed Saturday in the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Midwest Nationals at World Wide Technology Raceway. Schumacher, the eight-time Top Fuel season champion, returned to racing in July after not competing last year, had a 3.680-second run at 332.92 mph in the rain-delayed session for his 88th career No. 1 qualifier. The 50-year-old star has a record 84 Top Fuel event victories. Paul Lee topped Funny Car for his first No. 1, running a 3.913 at 326.95 in his Toyota Camry. Only one run of qualifying was completed in Top Fuel and Funny Car because of the rain. Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle were unable to make qualifying attempts.

HOUSTON (AP) — Alan Pulido had his first multi-goal game in MLS, Gianluca Busio had two assists, and Sporting Kansas City beat the Houston Dynamo 2-0. Pulido opened the scoring in the 34th minute and his sliding first-timer in the 73rd made it 2-0. Sporting (7-5-2) snapped a two-game skid. Sam Junqua, a 23-year-old defender, scored his first MLS goal for the Dynamo in the 84th minute. Houston (3-5-7) is winless, with three losses, in its last six games.

Iowa State hands No. 18 Oklahoma second straight loss, 37-30

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Breece Hall scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 8-yard run with 4:06 left and Isheem Young intercepted Spencer Rattler’s pass in the end zone on No. 18 Oklahoma’s final drive, giving Iowa State a 37-30 victory Saturday night.

The Sooners, beaten at home by Kansas State last week, lost back-to-back regular-season games for the first time since 1999. They lost in Ames for the first time since 1960.

The Cyclones wore down the Sooners with the running of Hall, who rushed for 139 yards. Iowa State’s Brock Purdy passed for 254 yards and had a 2-yard touchdown run to tie it at 30.

 

Work release escape of Andrew Nielsen

FORT DODGE – The Iowa Department of Corrections, Saturday, said 43-year old Andrew James Nielsen, convicted of Burglary 1st Degree and other crimes in Webster County, failed to report back to the Fort Dodge Residential Center as required Friday night.

Nielsen is a white male, 5-feet 9-inches tall, and weighs 230 pounds. He was admitted to the work release facility on October 1, 2020.  Persons with information on Nielsen’s whereabouts should contact local police.

Gov. Reynolds orders flags at half-staff for Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service

(DES MOINES) – Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa at half-staff in honor of the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service on Sunday, October 4, 2020. Flags should be lowered from sunrise to sunset on October 4, 2020. All firefighters who have died in the line of duty are honored every year during the first weekend in October.

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities  throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flags at half-staff for the same length of time.

Chiefs-Patriots game off amid report Newton has COVID-19

The NFL has postponed this week’s game between New England and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs after positive COVID-19 tests on both teams. ESPN reported on Saturday that Patriots quarterback Cam Newton was among those contracting the disease. The NFL says the game originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon will be played Monday or Tuesday.

The league said the move followed “positive COVID-19 tests on both teams.” The Patriots confirmed that a player has tested positive but did not reveal his name. The matchup between Pittsburgh and Tennessee has also been postponed, because of an outbreak on the Titans.

IA COVID-19 update for Saturday, Oct. 3 2020: 10 more deaths; over 91k positive cases to date

The State of Iowa’s COVID-19 dashboard today (Saturday), indicates that since 10-a.m. Friday, there were 10 more deaths attributed to the virus, for a total of 1,377, and (as of 10-a.m.), 1,107 more Positive cases, for a total of 91,861. Deaths attributed to a pre-existing medical condition number 938. There have been 5,741 lab results returned since Friday, with 5,096 coming back Negative for the virus, and 638 positive. The total number of tests administered to-date, amount to 816,710, with 723,312 Negative. The 14-day rolling average remains 8.8%. Health officials say 71,301 Iowans have recovered from the effects of COVID-19.

In the KJAN listening area, Cass County has four new Positive cases of COVID-19, for a total of 192. Other new, Positive test results include: 27 in Pottawattamie County; 13 more in Harrison County; 12 more cases in Guthrie County; six new positive cases were reported in Madison County; five more in Audubon County; three more each in Montgomery and Union Counties; there are two new cases in Shelby County, and one more case in Adams County. There was also one more death that took place in Pottawattamie County, for a total of 41.

Hospitalization data due to COVID-19 show: 402 are hospitalized as of today (compared to 393 yesterday); 100 patients are in an ICU (compared to 95 yesterday); 58 people have been admitted to a hospital (there were 66 yesterday), and 38 COVID patients are on a ventilator (2 more than on Friday). In western/southwest Iowa, 23 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, nine are in an ICU, two were admitted since yesterday, and no one is on a ventilator.

There are currently 52 long-term care facilities with coronavirus outbreaks, in Iowa. IDPH reports 1,132 positive cases and 684 recoveries within those facilities. There have been 709 deaths in Iowa’s long-term care facilities, five more than yesterday.

ROCHELLE BRUNS, 51, of Elk Horn, died Thursday, Oct. 1st, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital, in Atlantic. A Celebration of Life for ROCHELLE BRUNS will be held 1-p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10th, at the Exira-EHK Spartan Football Field, in Exira. Everyone is invited to bring a lawn chair or blanket for the service, or, there will be seating in the stadium. Kessler Funeral Home in Exira has the arrangements.

There will be an open visitation at the funeral home on Friday, Oct. 9th, from 8-a.m. until 8-p.m., with the family present from 5-until 7-p.m.

ROCHELLE BRUNS is survived by:

Her husband – Matt Bruns, of Elk Horn.

Her sons – Cole Bruns, of Spirit Lake, and Cade Bruns, of Ankeny.

Her Parents – John (Beverly) Gerken, of George (IA).

Her brother – B.J. (Sasha) Gerken, of George (IA).
