CHARLIE HAIR, 69, of Greenfield, died Sunday, Oct. 4th, at Mercy Medical Center, in Des Moines. Per his wishes, no services will be held for CHARLIE HAIR. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the arrangements.

Shenandoah man served w/a warrant for Theft, Burglary & other charges

A man being held in the Page County Jail was served with a warrant, Monday charging him with multiple offenses. Page County Deputies served 36-year old Matthew Lawrence Magers, of Shenandoah, with the warrant for Theft 2nd degree, Burglary 3rd degree, Interference with official acts, trespass resulting in damage or injury, and Criminal mischief 5th. The combined charges have a cash or surety bond amounting to $11,600, and are the result of a Shenandoah Police Department investigation & the arrest of Magers on October 2, 2020.

The warrant that the Page County Sheriff’s Office served on October 5, 2020, has a bond of $25,000.00 cash only. His total bond currently amounts to $36,600. Magers continues to be held in the Page County Jail, pending further court proceedings.

Audubon County Sheriff’s report (issued 10/6/20)

Audubon County Sheriff Todd Johnson, Tuesday (Today), issued a report on arrests that occurred in September and so far this month (October). The October report says:

  • Scott Belew, age 29 of Audubon, was arrested Monday (October 5th), for Trespass in the 1st degree and Theft in the 5th. He was released after appearing before the magistrate.
  • Tyler Carter, age 29, of Exira, was arrested Sunday, for Assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia. Carter was seen by the magistrate and released on his own recognizance.
  • Last Friday, 57-year old Scott Black, of Hamlin, was arrested Driving while Barred. Black posted cash bond and was released.
  • And, on Thursday, 22-year old Sylas Stangeland, of Harlan was arrested on an outstanding Audubon County warrant for Burglary 3rd, Theft 2nd and possession of burglary tools. The charges stem from a burglary investigation in Audubon County.

Sheriff Johnson says there were five arrests in Audubon County last month:

  • Tammy Henriksen, age 58 of Audubon was arrested September 28th, for aiding and abetting the Violation of a No-Contact Order. She was later released on her own recognizance.
  • On Sept. 24th, 58-year old Dennis Petersen, of Exira, was arrested for Violation of a No-Contact Order and Violation of Probation. He was sentenced on the Violation of Probation and was released several days later.
  • On the 18th, 22-year old Peyton Busse, of Guthrie Center, was arrested in Audubon County for Operating While Intoxicated-1st offense. He was later released on his own recognizance.
  • 38-year old Mitchell Killion, of Orient, was arrested September 14th, for OWI/1st.  He was seen by the magistrate and was later released.
  • And, on Sept. 6th, 36-year old Joseph Jensen, of Exira, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear. He was released on his own recognizance.

GOP asks Iowa Supreme Court to stay ruling on absentee forms

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Republican groups are asking the Iowa Supreme Court to stay a judge’s ruling that blocked enforcement of a state order that’s been used to invalidate tens of thousands of absentee ballot requests. The Republican National Committee, President Trump’s reelection campaign and other GOP groups said in a court filing that Iowa’s election administration could be thrown into “chaos” if the ruling stands.

At issue is a Monday ruling by Judge Robert Hanson blocking Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate from enforcing a directive that required counties to mail blank absentee ballot applications to voters instead of ones pre-filled with their personal information. Hanson found the directive would harm the public’s interest in making absentee voting as easy as possible.

 

2 killed in eastern Iowa crash involving semi, 2 vehicles

PALO, Iowa (AP) — Authorities in eastern Iowa say two people have died in a crash involving three vehicles, including a semitrailer. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that the crash happened around 2:30 p.m. Monday at a rural intersection several miles south of Palo. Deputies who first arrived on the scene found that the semi, a car and a pickup truck had collided, and the semi was engulfed in flames.

Investigators say the driver of the semi was pulled from the burning wreckage by passing motorists and was flown to a nearby hospital. The drivers of the car and pickup were declared dead at the scene. Authorities had not released their names by late Tuesday morning.

 

Governor’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board focuses on child care, broadband, housing

(Radio Iowa) – An advisory board Governor Reynolds assembled in mid-June is making 56 recommendations for jump-starting Iowa’s economic recovery from the pandemic. The board’s top recommendation is for the state to take steps to make child care more affordable and accessible. The group ranks universal broadband access and increasing the supply of affordable housing as other top priorities. The board, which had its final meeting this (Tuesday) morning, was led by Ben McLean, the C-E-O of Ruan Transportation Management Systems in Des Moines.

Governor Kim Reynolds says the group’s report will serve as the foundation for her 2021 legislative agenda.

Nick Bowdish, President and C-E-O of Elite Octane in Atlantic, was one of 13 business executives to serve on the panel.

 

The advisory board approved its list of recommendations today (Tuesday). Its final report will be drafted by the end of the month.

Nebraska woman pleads guilty in Iowa stabbing death

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Nebraska woman has pleaded guilty to a reduced murder charge in the 2018 stabbing death of another woman in northwest Iowa. The Sioux City Journal reports that 22-year-old Melissa Camargo-Flores, of Dakota City, Nebraska, pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder in the death of 24-year-old Kenia Alvarez-Flores in Sioux City on April 8, 2018. Camargo-Flores had faced a first-degree murder charge and the possibility of life in prison before the plea deal.

Camargo-Flores admitted stabbing Alvarez-Flores. Prosecutors say she had been romantically involved with the victim’s boyfriend. Camargo-Flores now faces up to 50 years in prison when she’s sentenced on Oct. 29.

Griswold cancels football game at East Mills

Griswold Activities Director Troy Niklaus released a statement on Tuesday morning that Griswold will be cancelling their football game at East Mills this Friday night. Griswold had to cancel their game last week due to low numbers with some players out with illness. The district has since experienced a couple of COVID-19 infections that impacted a number of students and staff with contact tracing. The Griswold School Board on Monday night voted 6-1 to implement a mask mandate within the district that will go into effect on Wednesday and continue through the end of the semester.
