Atlantic Police Chief loses part of his uniform…for a good cause

Donnie Drennan (Left), and Mike Blevins (Right), cut the sleeves off of Police Chief Dave Erickson’s uniform to take custody of the Breast Cancer Awareness patches.

Two members from Pymosa Masonic Lodge 271, Mike Blevins and Donnie Drennan, came to City Hall in Atlantic, Tuesday, and cut the sleeves off Chief Dave Erickson’s uniform, in exchange for $100 and to get his pink patches for breast cancer awareness.  Officials say Mike Blevins turned around afterward and gave one of the sleeves to the Deputy City Clerk Ali Tupper, a breast cancer survivor.

Chief Erickson is challenging anyone in town to beat the $100 donation. to get HIS patches. Contact the Atlantic P-D at 243-3512 (during business hours), or stop-by to get your bid in today! The person or group of people with the highest bid gets to cut the sleeves off Chief Erickson again, during the November 4th City Council meeting.

Bids will be taken through October 30 at 4:00 pm. All proceeds will go to Cass County Relay for Life, benefiting the American Cancer Society.

The patches can be purchased separately for $10 and are available for purchase at the Atlantic Police Department, Atlantic City Hall, and Atlantic Chamber of Commerce offices.

Iowa budget experts see revenue growth next year

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — State budget experts say they expect state revenues to be about $1.9 million less than last year, revising their estimate to $7.91 billion. The forecasters also estimated Tuesday that the state will bring in about $319 million more for next year despite economic challenges from the coronavirus pandemic and a sagging farm economy.

The estimate by the Revenue Estimating Conference for the upcoming year would equate to 4% revenue growth, giving the state about $8.23 billion to spend. The group by law must meet again in December and provide an estimate that Gov. Kim Reynolds must use to draft a budget.

LOIS A. MATTHIESSEN, 87 of Omaha (& formerly Harlan), died Monday, October 12th. Funeral services for LOIS MATTHIESSEN will be held 11-a.m. Friday, October 16th at Korisko Larkin Staskiewicz Funeral Home in Omaha (5108 F Street).

Visitation will be held from 10-until 11-a.m. Friday, at the Funeral Home.

Burial will be held in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Omaha.

Memorials may be directed to St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Omaha, and/or the Nebraska Humane Society, in Omaha.

LOIS MATTHISSEN is survived by:

Iowa’s Fran McCaffery on the importance of experience

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery hopes experience will help his team on the court next season as well as navigate through a pandemic. The Hawkeyes return seven players with starting experience from last year’s team that was 20-11 when the season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

McCaffery says because of COVID the entire roster must be ready to play.

McCaffery says all teams will be forced to deal with uncertainty.

Trumpeter Swan Contest time in Cass County

It’s that time of year for the Cass County Conservation Board to once again ask you…”When do you think the first Trumpeter Swan will arrive at the Schildberg Quarry?” Call in your prediction (by November 11th) to the Conservation Board, at 712-769-2372, leave a message and return phone number if their staff are not in.

Duplicate dates will not be allowed. For example, if a caller predicts November 25th, no one else will be allowed to predict that arrival date. So, call anytime until November 11th to make your prediction! One prediction per family, please.

The sponsors of this contest will determine the official arrival of more than 6 trumpeter swans to Lake 4. The winner will receive a Trumpeter Swan 8×10 print from the Cass County Conservation Board. Sorry, this contest is only for residents of Cass County.

6th Biennial Lighted Halloween Campground

Cass County Conservation is hosting their 6th Biennial Lighted Halloween Campground, Saturday October 24th at Cold Springs Park in Lewis, from 7-9 PM. The event is designed to be non-scary, Family Friendly, and FREE to drive into the night! Prizes will be for the top 3 voted sites, and for some special categories. Prizes are donated by event sponsor Cappel’s Ace Hardware. The event will be cancelled if there is inclement weather.

Firefighters: Attempt to smoke out animal let to church fire

GREEN MOUNTAIN, Iowa (AP) — Firefighters in east-central Iowa say a rural church was destroyed in a fire sparked by an attempt to smoke out a wild animal that had gotten inside. Station WHO-TV reports that the Monday afternoon fire burned down the Chapel United Methodist Church near Green Mountain. Investigators say someone tried to get rid of an animal that had gotten inside the church using a smoke bomb, which started the fire.

Officials did not indicate what kind of animal had gotten inside. Fire officials say it took seven fire crews and several hours to fully extinguish the blaze. The church was first established in 1867,

Iowa’s Brandon Smith talks about the upcoming season

(Radio Iowa)  – Iowa receiver Brandon Smith says after several weeks of watching games from other conferences he is ready to get started. The Hawkeyes open Big Ten play at Purdue on October 24.

Smith says a rigorous testing program is underway as they prepare for the season.

Smith says they players realize they need to do their part to make sure games are played.
