ALICE E. WEGNER, 94, of Harlan died Saturday, December 5th at Hansen House in Harlan. Graveside Services for ALICE E. WEGNER will be held on Wednesday, December 9th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Panama. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

ALICE E. WEGNER is survived by:

Son: Philip (Carol) Wegner of Panama.

Daughters: Ruth Huebert of Panama. Norma (Jan) Randall of Cando, ND.

Sister: Lavina Gross of Harlan.

Two individuals from Stanton, one from Elliott arrested on Sunday

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports three arrests on Sunday.

At 12:25 p.m. Deputies responded to a call at a residence in Stanton regarding a disagreement over property that had become physical. After investigation 36-year-old Kaleb L. Wagaman was arrested for Child Endangerment and 37-year-old Katie L. Wagaman was arrested for Child Endangerment and Domestic Abuse Assault. Both individuals were taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held in lieu of bond. The arrests took place during the second call of the day to their residence.

Also on Sunday at 2:24 p.m. Deputies arrested 37-year-old Ryan K. Richards of Elliott on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault Second Offense. The arrest took place as the result of a reported domestic disturbance. Richards was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $1,000 bond.

DePaul at Iowa St men’s hoops canceled for COVID

(A-P) The DePaul at Iowa State men’s basketball game scheduled for Sunday has been canceled under guidelines for COVID-19 protocols in the Blue Demons’ program. DePaul has yet to play this season. It has had five games either canceled or postponed. The Blue Demons’ next scheduled game is set for Friday at Seton Hall.

Iowa prison inmate with COVID-19 dies at hospital

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa prison inmate with COVID-19 and other medical conditions has died at a hospital. The Iowa Department of Corrections said Sunday that Larry Whaley died Saturday morning at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Whaley had been serving a 50-year sentence for second-degree murder at Anamosa State Penitentiary, which has had a significant coronavirus outbreak this fall. The 64-year-old Whaley had been hospitalized for several days before his death.

ROBERT LEE HOFFMAN, 90, of Cloves Lakes Care Center in Staten Island, NY (formerly of Elliott), died Thursday, December 3, 2020. No services are planned at this time, and interment for ROBERT HOFFMAN will be in the Lowman Cemetery (Southeast of Griswold) at a later date. Rieken-Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is assisting the family.

ROBERT LEE HOFFMAN is survived by his his sister: Charlene Hines of Elliott.

ISU-DePaul cancelled due to COVID-19 issues

The Iowa State vs. DePaul men’s basketball game that was scheduled for Sunday evening as part of the Big 12/Big East Battle was cancelled due to COVID-19 issues among the DePaul roster and staff. Iowa State Coach Steve Prohm issued this statement:

“We are disappointed that we are unable to play this evening against DePaul. We were looking forward to playing in front of our fans for the first time this season. When this season started we knew there would likely be postponements and cancellations. Dealing with a pandemic is difficult. Even though our players are disappointed they won’t be able to play tonight, it’s also important to remember that the health and safety of the student-athletes is our No. 1 concern.”

Next up for the Cyclones is a trip to Iowa City for the Cy-Hawk game on Friday night at 8:00 p.m.

No. 1 South Carolina rolls past No. 23 Iowa State, 83-65

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Zia Cooke scored 19 points and No. 1 South Carolina bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 83-65 win over 23rd-ranked Iowa State. The Gamecocks (4-1) were beaten by No. 8 N.C. State 54-46 on Thursday, but never trailed against the Cyclones (2-2) during the SEC/Big 12 Challenge matchup.

Aliyah Boston and Brea Beal added 13 points each while Destanni Henderson had 12. Ashley Joens scored 32 points for Iowa State, which shot just 37.1% for the game and was outrebounded 50-24.

 

Red Oak Police report 2 arrests

Police in Red Oak arrested two people on separate charges, Saturday. At around 11:47-p.m., Officers arrested 26-year-old Damian Allen Barr, of Omaha, at Highway 34 & 4th Street, on a Pottawattamie County warrant for Violation of Probation. Barr was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail. And, at around 3:22-p.m., Red Oak Police arrested 57-year-old Rhonda Joann Sperber, of Red Oak, for Theft in the 5th Degree. She was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $300 bond.

Iowa COVID-19 update for 12/6/20: Death rate decreasing; Hospitalizations also falling

Iowa’s Coronavirus dashboard early today (10-a.m. Sunday) shows the rapid number of increases in deaths from COVID-19 have declined from 62 Saturday to 17 today, for a total of 2,682. The past few days (Dec. 3-5) have shown increases of 70, 84 and 62 dead (per day, respectively). Five more deaths have been recorded in Pottawattamie County since Saturday, for a total of 81.

Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities report 1,118 deaths, while deaths attributed in-part to preexisting conditions number 1,363. There are 1,869 new Positive cases of COVID-19 statewide, for a total of 243,931. Long-Term Care facility outbreaks are at 137. There are 5,282 positive cases and 2,305 recoveries reported within those facilities. Cass County currently has 161 positive cases among two facilities, with 92 recovered.

Hospitalizations statewide have fallen from 960 Saturday, to 918 today, with 195 COVID patients in an ICU (down from 204 previously); 141 were admitted (10 more than previous), and 122 patients are on a ventilator (that’s up 5 from Saturday). Hospitals in southwest/western Iowa (RMCC Region 4) report: 52 hospitalized; 209 are in an ICU; 4 were admitted, and 7 COVID patients remain on a ventilator.

Iowans who have recovered from the virus number 158,994, while 1,248,999 have been tested, to-date. The State’s positivity rate is down to 16.5%. Cass County’s positivity rate has declined to 15.0%.
