Northern Iowa sent retiring coach Mark Farley out with a victory. The Panthers beat Indiana State 41-34. It was UNI’s first Missouri Valley win of the season.
Farley is the school’s all-time leader in wins. He led the Panthers to seven conference titles, 13 trips to the FCS playoffs and a spot in the championship game in 2005.
The Iowa Hawkeye women outscored Washington State 20-4 in the second quarter and rolled to a 72-43 victory in Iowa City. Wasinigton State led 19-18 at the end of one but was managed only nine points in the next two quarters combined. Hawkeye coach Jan Jensen says they refocused on defense after the first quarter.
The Hawkeyes only made 2-of-17 from three point range and were just 12-of-21 from the stripe.
The Hawkeyes are 6-0 and open the Cancun Challenge on Thursday night against Rhode Island.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The University of Iowa volleyball team dropped straight sets to No. 16 Minnesota on Saturday evening inside the Maturi Pavilion. The Hawkeyes fall to 10-20 on the season and 4-14 in conference.
Junior Claire Ammeraal recorded a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs. Senior Michelle Urquhartwas just shy of a double-double with nine kills and nine digs. Sophomore Hannah Whittingstall had four kills and two blocks. Iowa out-blocked Minnesota, 5-4.
MATCH SUMMARY
SET ONE (MINNESOTA 25-20)
Minnesota took the opening two points, when an Ammeraal kill got the Hawkeyes on the board at 2-1. Minnesota found small runs to extend its lead to 6-2. The Hawkeyes fought back, getting within one at 7-6 on a kill from Urquhart. A 4-0 run from the Gophers forced an Iowa timeout at 11-6. Following the timeout, Iowa found its own 4-0 run and forced a Minnesota timeout at 11-10. Both teams traded runs, with Minnesota winning the race to 20, at 20-15. A kill from Urquhart would fend off a Minnesota set point, before the Hawkeyes dropped the first set to the Gophers.
SET TWO (MINNESOTA 25-18)
The Hawkeyes capitalized on Minnesota errors and strong serving from Whittingstall to mount a 6-1 lead to start the second set. Minnesota would find its own 5-1 flurry to get within one at 7-6. Back-to-back kills from sophomore Gabby Deery and Urquhart extended the Hawkeyes lead to 9-6. Minnesota found some momentum, using a 4-0 run to take the lead at 10-9, and force an Iowa timeout. Coming out of the timeout, freshman Malu Garcia terminated a kill to tie the set at 10-10. The Hawkeyes gained some momentum after two kills from Urquhart and two blocks to lead 15-12. But Minnesota responded with a 13-3 run to close out the second set.
SET THREE (MINNESOTA 25-12)
An Iowa block answered Minnesota’s set-opening point. Minnesota found an early lead at 8-3, forcing an Iowa timeout. Back-to-back kills from Deery and sophomore Rosa Vesty cut Minnesota’s lead to 12-6. Minnesota pulled away on a 6-0 run to lead 18-6. The Hawkeyes rallied with a 3-0 run but would be unable to catch Minnesota. The Gophers finished the set on a 3-0 run to close out the match.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team concluded the Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Hawkeyes finished fifth overall with 879 points. Iowa tallied a total of 46 personal bests, 24 season bests and seven top-ten records on the weekend.
“I thought we had great energy to finish out the meet tonight,” Iowa head coach Nathan Mundt said. “It was really fun to watch our team come together and rally around each other to wrap up the meet here at home. Just incredible performances. We had multiple NCAA B cuts again tonight, and lifetime-best performances were off the charts throughout the whole weekend. This gives us great momentum going into the second half of our season. We’re looking forward to having the Thanksgiving holiday off, but coming back and getting ready for the CyHawk series, aiming to beat the Cyclones here on December 13th. So let’s get back to the pool and make it rowdy.”
Two Hawkeyes entered the program’s top-10 list in the 1,650 freestyle. Sophomore Olivia Frantum swam a time of 16:39.75, placing fourth and ranking ninth all-time at Iowa. Senior Alix O’Brien followed close behind, coming in fifth with a time of 16:42.33 and setting the tenth-fastest time in school history.
The Iowa divers closed out the weekend on a high note. Junior Geneva Pauly collected a personal record in her preliminary platform dive with a score of 278.65. Pauly finished the night with a score of 271.45, placing third. Freshman Stephanie Avram had a day of her own, placing sixth in the final platform dive with a lifetime best score of 237.85.
“I was really proud of the girls, both Stephanie and Geneva, for making the A finals, especially Stephanie being a freshman,” diving coach Todd Waikel said. “This was her first championship format meet and I know she was exhausted coming into this. So to see her rise to the occasion and get in the A finals was huge. I was also proud of the progress Geneva has been making. She’s been working really hard every day in the pool. She showcased two new, hard dives that she hasn’t done before. She not only did that, but she did them really well and she got a personal record. I’m just really proud of her overall performance.”
University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving faces in-state rival Iowa State for the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The meet will take place on Dec.13 at 6 p.m. (CT) in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.

MARSHALL, Mo. – The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team claimed one title on Saturday at the Missouri Valley Open and had five top-three finishes.
Brianna Gonzalez (117) was the lone Hawkeye to capture a title. Gonzalez pinned Zao Estrada of William Penn University in 3:48 in the semifinals to start the day. She then recorded her fourth, 10-0, technical fall of the tournament in the championship match to defeat Camille Fournier from Texas Wesleyan.
Rianne Murphy (103), Ava Bayless (110) and Naomi Simon (180) each made the finals and placed second in their respective weight classes.
Iowa’s other place finishers included Emilie Gonzalez (3rd, 110), Cali Leng (6th, 124), Karlee Brooks (131, 7th), Emily Frost (131, 5th), Ava Rose (131, 8th), Katja Osteen (5th, 207) and Alivia White (4th, 207).

Audi Crooks basket with a second remaining was the game winner as the eighth ranked Iowa State women edged Drake 80-78 in Ames. Crooks finished with a team high 33 points.
The Cyclones improve to 5-1 and head to Florida to play top ranked South Carolina Thanksgiving Day.
Drake guard Katie Dinnebier finished with a game high 39 points and her layup with just over nine seconds remaining tied the game at 38.

ROBERT LANGFELT, 77, of Massena, died Saturday, November 23, 2024, at Cass Health in Atlantic. A Celebration of Life for BOB LANGFELT will be held on Dec. 7th from 2-until 4-p.m., at the Crestwood Hills Golf Course, in Anita. Lamb Funeral Home in Massena has the arrangements.

(Creston, Iowa) – An accident Friday night in the Creston City limits caused $2,000 damage to a 2020 Ford Explorer SUV, but no one was injured. The Union County Sheriff’s Office says the SUV, driven by 31-year-old Mark Donald Cooley, of Mount Ayr, was heading south on Highway 25, when a deer came out of the west ditch and struck a vehicle heading north, causing the animal to go back into the southbound lane, where it was struck by the SUV. The vehicle sustained damage to its fender and radiator, but it was able to be driven away, while leaking fluid.
The accident happened at around 6:53-p.m., Friday.

ATLANTIC, IA (November 23, 2024) – Produce in the Park’s Harvest Market is this Monday, November 25 from 3-6 PM at the Cass County Community Center, 805 W. 10th Street in Atlantic. Local shoppers are invited to pick up food and decorations for their thanksgiving celebrations and get a head start on holiday gift shopping when they browse the wide variety of locally grown and home-made items.
This year, everyone 18 and older who attends Harvest Market can enter a free drawing for a $100 gift card to spend at the upcoming Christmas Market in December. Harvest Market is always held the Monday before Thanksgiving so shoppers celebrate with local foods, gifts, and decorations. This year’s Harvest Market is expected to offer a plethora of local vegetables including greens, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and squash, along with local meats, desserts, pastries, baked goods, honey, eggs, jams, jellies, syrups, popcorn, and more.
In addition to local foods, Harvest Market offers an opportunity to purchase local and handmade holiday decor and gifts. Shoppers can expect to find evergreen decorations, candles, soaps, crocheted toys, earrings, artwork, lavender products, wood crafts, seasonal hand towels, and more.
This year’s Harvest Market also includes a soup supper for those wanting a warm bite to eat before or after shopping.
