Iowa COVID-19 update for 5/9/21: 1 additional death; 141 additional cases

The Iowa Department of Public health, Sunday, said there were 141 new COVID-19 positive tests over the previous 24-hours, and one additional death. The total number of COVID-related deaths statewide remains 5,984. The health department reports 397,584 total positive tests since the start of the pandemic. The state’s positivity rates are unchanged from Saturday, with the 14-day rate 3.7%, and the seven-day rate at 3.5%.

COVID hospitalizations across the Iowa continue to slowly decline. As of Sunday, there were 170 hospitalized, 39 persons in an ICU, 21 people were admitted, and 12 were on a ventilator. In RMCC Region 4 (hospitals in western/southwest Iowa), there are 14 COVID patients hospitalized; four are in an ICU; four people were admitted, and no one was on a ventilator.

There have been more than 2.49-million doses of a COVID vaccine administered in Iowa, and nearly 1.18-million persons who have completed their respective vaccination series.

The state reports one Long-Term Care Facility Outbreaks, which is one less than what was reported on Friday. The Urbandale Health Care Center has 19 positive cases among residents and staff,  with 17 total recoveries. The state reports 2,323 care facility deaths since the pandemic began.

CAM School Board regular meeting set for Monday evening

The CAM School District will hold a public hearing and their regular monthly meeting Monday evening, in the Superintendent’s Office. The regular meeting starts at 5:30-p.m., followed by a Public Hearing at 6:30-p.m., on the proposed 2020-2021 Budget Amendment, as published, and approval of the budget.

During the regular session, the CAM School Board will discuss and/or act on: an Award Audit RFP (Request For Proposal); A 2021-22 Library Services Agreement with Green Hills AEA (GHAEA); and approval of a 2021-22 contract agreement with the CAM Education Association (CAMEA) and Contract for the 2021-22 school year.

The Board will also discuss and possibly act on matters pertaining to district facilities, a Mask mandate, and their 400-Series Board reports.

Saturday’s High in Atlantic was 53. Our Low this morning, 42. We received .93″ rain at the KJAN studios yesterday into early this morning. Last year on this date, the High in Atlantic was 67 and the Low was 30. The Record High here on this date was 96 in 1895, and the Record Low was 24, in 1980.

Work release escapee taunts Iowa DOC on social media

DES MOINES – The Iowa Department of Corrections, Saturday, reported 33-year-old Brandon Allen Mitchell, who was convicted of Willful Injury in Polk County, left the Fort Des Moines Residential Correctional Facility without permission Friday night, and has not returned.

Mitchell is a white male, height 5’9″, and weighs 185 pounds. He was admitted to the work release facility on March 29, 2021. On a Des Moines television station’s social media post about his escape, Mitchell responded by saying through his social media post, “Lol I didn’t escape they opened the door and let me walk out of it… you guys act like I kicked some walls down and climbed over it.” He said tauntingly, also, that “They know where I’m at they always do someone will do there [sic] job for them.”

Obituaries

JANE E. JORGENSEN, 82, of Audubon, died Thursday, May 6th, at the Friendship Home in Audubon. Funeral services for JANE JORGENSEN will be held 10:30-a.m. Saturday, May 15th, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, in Audubon. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

Family visitation will be from 5-until 7-p.m. Friday, May 14th, at the funeral home.

Burial is in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

JANE JORGENSEN is survived by:

Her sons – Jon Jorgensen, of Des Moines; Aaron Jorgensen, of Ross, and Jeff (Mary) Jorgensen, of Council Bluffs.

Her daughter – Pamela (Kenneth) Wittrock, of Carroll.

Her brother – John “Jack” Alt, of Audubon.

Her sister – Neoma (Phil) Thomas, of Ames.

2 grandchildren, other relatives, in-laws and friends.

The Iowa Department of Public health, Saturday, said there were 311 new COVID-19 positive tests, and three additional deaths, including one in Union County, where the pandemic total is 33. The total number of COVID-related deaths statewide is 5,983. The health department reports 397,443 total positive tests since the start of the pandemic. The state’s positivity rates continue to decline, with the 14-day rate 3.7%, and the seven-day rate at 3.5%.

COVID hospitalizations across slowly declining. As of Saturday, there were 176 hospitalized, 39 persons in an ICU, 27 people were admitted, and 16 were on a ventilator. In RMCC Region 4 (hospitals in western/southwest Iowa), there are 12 COVID patients hospitalized; five are in an ICU; two people were admitted, and one person is on a ventilator.

Clarinda man arrested following traffic stop in Montgomery County

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest Friday evening of a Clarinda man following a traffic stop. At 7:15 p.m. Deputies conducted a traffic stop at Highway 48 and 270th Street. As a result of that stop they arrested 29-year-old Ryan Joel Kaleb Christie of Clarinda for Driving Under Suspension. Christie was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $300 bond.
