Sports

December 12th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – It was ugly but still a win as 17th ranked Iowa State had to grind out a 47-37 win over Jackson State. The Cyclones won despite shooting just 35 percent as they improve to 10-0.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger. The Cyclones survived cold shooting with another strong defensive effort.

Otzelberger says the Cyclones never got clicking on offense.

Iowa State is off for finals and hosts Southeast Louisiana next Sunday.

Jaz Kunc led ISU with 12 points. Gabe Kalscheur added 11 and says the Cyclones have become a confident team.

It was Iowa State’s lowest scoring total in a victory in 40 years.

Sports

December 12th, 2021 by admin

The Audubon boys basketball team never led but kept hanging around against Central Decatur on Saturday in Des Moines, ultimately falling 50-45 to the Cardinals. Central Decatur hit a couple shots at the end of the first quarter to lead 16-8 at the end of 1 and were up 23-14 at halftime. The lead stayed around 8-10 points through most of the second half until the Wheelers made it interesting late. Using pressure defense the Wheelers forced a few Cardinal turnovers and got the lead down to 5 a couple times. The Cardinals ultimately did enough to hang on.

Trey Hullinger had a big game for Central Decatur with 23 points. Matthew Boothe added 9 and Jack Scrivner had 7. The Cardinals stayed unbeaten at 4-0.

Audubon was led by 14 points from Carson Bauer and 10 from Edward Miller. The Wheelers fall to 1-3. They’ll host Riverside on Tuesday.

The Audubon girls basketball team responded to a third quarter push from Central Decatur and pulled away in the final period for a 64-51 win at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday. The Wheelers started the game with an 8-0 run and built a 14 points halftime lead behind a 16 point half from Jaci Christensen. Central Decatur clawed their way back in with a 14-0 run early in the third quarter. The Cardinals got as close as 1 and it was 45-42 at the end of the third. The Wheelers got back on track in the fourth with a 12-0 start to the quarter and grabbed the win.

Audubon head coach Darran Miller said they let down a bit but liked the late response.

Jaci Christensen led the Wheelers with 20 points and Aleah Hermensen dropped in 14 points. A number of other Wheelers came through with some timely outside shots. Sienna Albertsen hit three triples and Audrey Jensen and Madison Steckler each hit two. Coach Miller said it was key to knock down some of those open looks.

Audubon improves to 3-1 on the season and will prep for a home game against Riverside on Tuesday. Central Decatur was led by 13 points from Layni Masters and 12 from Hallee Hamilton. The Cardinals fall to 2-3.
