CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Michael Schmadeke kicked a 24-yard field goal with 5:37 remaining in the game and then Deiondre’ Hall returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown to give Northern Iowa a 38-35 win over Eastern Washington in a battle of FCS powers on Saturday.

Hall’s pick of Jordan West came on the first official play after the field goal — and after a holding penalty wiped out West’s 66 yard run to the Northern Iowa 17. The Eagles (0-2) quickly answered with a touchdown but the Panthers got a good kick return from Tyvis Smith and kept the ball for the final 3:20.

Aaron Bailey, who threw for two touchdowns, and Darrian Miller ran for 134 and 112 yards, respectively, for Northern Iowa (1-1). That offset 526 passing yards for Eastern Washington quarterbacks West and Reilly Hennessey, who combined to go 37 of 47.

Eastern’s Nic Sblendorio had career-highs of 10 receptions and 158 yards while All-American Cooper Kupp had 9 for 179 and two touchdowns before sitting out the second half with a hip pointer.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Skip Schumaker hit a three-run homer, rookie Anthony DeSclafani pitched six strong innings and the Cincinnati Reds won their second game of the day, beating the struggling St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 on Saturday. The first-place Cardinals have lost the first three games of the four-game series. Their lead over Pittsburgh in the NL Central fell to three games, with the Pirates hosting Milwaukee on Saturday night.

St. Louis is 3-8 in September after three straight losses to the last-place Reds, who on Sunday can finish off their first four-game sweep of the Cardinals since 2003.

DeSclafani (9-10) struck out 10 and allowed one earned run. Lance Lynn (11-10) took the loss.

BOONE, Iowa (AP) — Donald Trump is saying good riddance to Rick Perry. Perry — a former Texas governor — is now out of the Republican presidential race. And Trump tells a crowd in Iowa, “He’s gone, good luck — he was very nasty to me.” Now the front-runner is taking aim at another 2016 rival, former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who has risen high in national preference polls.

The billionaire businessman says he doesn’t think Carson “has the energy” to negotiate with world leaders. And Trump criticized Carson for comments that seemed to question Trump’s religious faith.

Lavon and Miss NiNi talk about what to do with a wealth of fall apples.

SO EASY APPLE BUTTER
  • 4 lbs. (about 12 cups) cooking apples, peeled & sliced
  • 2 cups sugar (less if apples are sweet or you like less sweet)
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (more if you wish)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Place apple slices in a 4 quart slow cooker (use a liner to simplify clean up).  Pour vinegar and water over apples. Mix sugar and spices together; stir in to apples. Cover; cook on high for 7 hours or overnight. Stir or mash with a potato masher. Cool for up to 2 hours. Ladle into freezer bags or canning jars. Seal and label. Store 3 weeks in refrigerator or 1 year in freezer. Makes 2 to 3 pints.
Notes: Use an apple slicer to speed the process.
Do not peel but finish in a food processor if more smoothness is desired.
