Midwest meth-making down, but Mexican imports fill the void

News

September 13th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Authorities say there has been a sharp decline in the manufacture of methamphetamine in several Midwestern states that have had the most trouble with the drug, but it remains as popular as ever due to an influx of cheap Mexican imports.

Laws restricting the sale of an ingredient found in many cold medicines and key to making meth seem to have had their intended effect. The Drug Enforcement Administration doesn’t provide partial-year data on meth lab seizures, but drug fighters in several states that generally register the most meth lab busts say they’ve seen a startling decline.

Missouri is on pace for 40 percent fewer meth lab seizures this year, while Oklahoma’s are down 33 percent and Tennessee’s are down 48 percent.

Documents show Iowa has limited data on school bullying

News

September 13th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has been collecting data on school bullying for several years, but there are no complete numbers available and the agency tracking the information says it has limited staffing and funding to handle some of the work.

The Iowa Department of Education says it may seek legislative action to remedy the issue, after a review by The Associated Press shows years of bullying data is limited and more recently, missing for dozens of school districts.

Department spokeswoman Staci Hupp says the agency revamped its data collection system recently to gather better information, but the process has also resulted in inconsistent data. Gov. Terry Branstad has made anti-bullying efforts a legislative priority. When asked about the incomplete data, a spokesman said the governor is considering options, but he didn’t elaborate.

Beathard leads Iowa past Iowa State 31-17

Sports

September 12th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – C.J. Beathard threw three touchdown passes, including the tie-breaker to Riley McCarron with 2:14 left, lifting Iowa to a 31-17 victory over Iowa State on Saturday. Jordan Canzeri’s fumble deep in Iowa State territory had thwarted an earlier drive by the Hawkeyes (2-0). But their defense forced the Cyclones (1-1) to punt, Desmond King returned it to midfield and Beathard took the Hawkeyes to the decisive score, finding the 5-foot-9 McCarron in the back of the end zone from 25 yards out.

King’s interception gave the ball right back to Iowa and Canzeri scored on an 8-yard run to finish it off. The victory followed an emotional week for the Hawkeyes, who are mourning the deaths, four days apart, of former football standout Tyler Sash and former basketball star Roy Marble.
