Garvey, of Omaha, was transported by Council Bluffs Rescue to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, for treatment following the crash near Iowa Western Community College, at Highway 6 and College Road.

Officials say Garvey was west on Highway 6 at around 2:55-p.m., when his 2009 Buell motorcycle left the road. Garvey over-corrected and laid the cycle on its side. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa health specialists will be providing students with a third dose of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine free of charge in an effort to combat the spread of mumps on campus. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that the announcement of the free vaccine was made Friday.

Lisa James with the university’s clinical outreach says the university has ordered 3,000 doses of the vaccine and will being holding vaccination clinics next week for students under 25. James says between 100 and 110 cases of mumps have been confirmed on the campus this year. There are usually only 10 to 20 reported cases a year statewide.

The viral infection’s symptoms include swollen salivary glands, fever and muscle aches. It spreads easily in confined spaces.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City man granted a new trial on sex abuse charges has again been found guilty of the crime. The Sioux City Journal reports a Woodbury County jury found 43-year-old Julius Turner guilty on Friday of two counts of second-degree sexual abuse and one count of third-degree sexual abuse. A sentencing date has not been set.

Turner was granted a new trial in April after convincing an appeals court that his trial attorney was incompetent. He had been found guilty in 2011 of the same charges and sentenced to life in prison because he was a repeat offender. Court documents accuse Turner of sexually abusing three girls under 13 from 2008-2009. In 1992, he was convicted of third-degree sexual abuse and lascivious acts with a child.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — LeShun Daniels Jr. ran for two scores and injured quarterback C.J. Beathard threw the clinching touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to keep No. 10 Iowa unbeaten with a 35-27 win at Indiana on Saturday. The Hawkeyes (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten, No. 9 CFP) have matched the best start in school history. The last time it happened was 2009.

It was another frustrating finish for Indiana (4-5, 0-5), which got within 21-20 after a 28-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. But Daniels answered with a 1-yard scoring run, and Beathard sealed it with a 10-yard TD pass to George Kittle. Indiana got a late touchdown but was unable to recover the onside kick.

Beathard, who has been battling a groin injury, finished 19 of 33 for 231 yards. Indiana’s Jordan Howard ran 22 times for 174 yards and two scores against the nation’s No. 5 run defense, but the Hoosiers lost their fifth straight.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Aaron Bailey rushed for a career-best four touchdowns and threw for another in Northern Iowa’s 59-13 victory over Indiana State on Saturday night. Bailey completed 8 of 13 for 114 yards and ran for 54 yards. He transferred from Illinois to Northern Iowa (5-4, 3-3 Missouri Valley Conference) before the 2015 season to remain a quarterback.

The Panthers took advantage Indiana State’s three turnovers to score 28 straight in the second quarter. Bailey scored his second 1-yard TD run to make it 17-0 with 11:56 left in the second quarter. Tim Kilfoy returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown a minute later. Another interception led to Michael Malloy’s 10-yard score and Bailey followed a Sycamores fumble with a 2-yard TD run to make it 38-0 before the break.

Robert Tonyan Jr. had three catches for 80 yards and a touchdown for Indiana State (4-5, 2-4).

PUMPKIN CINNAMON PULL-APART LOAF

adapted from Better Home & Gardens Fall Baking

Pumpkin Bread 1 Pumpkin Bread 2 Pumpkin Bread 3 Pumpkin Bread 4 Pumpkin Bread 5 Pumpkin Bread 6 Pumpkin Bread 7

Ingredients for Bread:

  • ¾ c. milk
  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast (One 0.25-ounce package of active dry yeast is equal to 2 1/4 teaspoons of yeast)
  • 1 c. canned pumpkin, divided
  • 3 T. butter, melted
  • 2 T. granulated sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 t. salt
  • 3 c. all-purpose flour
  • 3 T. butter, melted
  • ¾ c. brown sugar
  • 1 T. ground cinnamon

CHOOSE ONE OF THESE GLAZE RECIPES FOR DRIZZLING

Ingredients for Cinnamon Glaze:

  • 1 c. powdered sugar
  • ½ t. ground cinnamon
  • ½ t. vanilla extract
  • 1 T. milk

Ingredients for Buttered Rum Glaze:

  • 2 T. butter
  • 2 T. brown sugar
  • 1-1/2 T. milk
  • ¾ c. powdered sugar
  • 1 T. Rum or 1 t. rum flavoring

Method for Bread:

In a small saucepan, heat milk just until warm (105-155 degrees F). In a large bowl combine warm milk and yeast; stir to dissolve yeast. Let stand 5-10 minutes or until foamy. Add ½ c. pumpkin, 3 T. melted butter, granulated sugar, egg yolk, and salt to yeast mixture. Beat with a mixer on medium until combined. Add half of flour; beat on low for 30 seconds, scraping bowl as needed. Beat 3 minutes on medium. Stir in the remaining flour. Shape dough into a ball (dough will not be smooth). Place dough in an oiled bowl. Cover; refrigerate overnight or up to 2 days. (Or to make right away, cover and let rise in a warm place for 45-60 minutes or until double in size.)

HINT: This beautiful golden dough can easily be made in the bread machine by using the dough cycle. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Then proceed according to the recipe to finish preparing the loaf for baking. I made the dough in my Zojirushi bread machine which is designed to make a 1-1/2 to 2-lb. loaf.

While the dough is rising, spray all inside edges of a 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan with nonstick spray.

Make pumpkin filling by stirring together remaining ½ c. pumpkin and 3 T. melted butter.

Roll dough into a 20 x 12-inch rectangle. Spread pumpkin filling over dough. Combine brown sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over pumpkin filling.

Cut dough rectangle crosswise into five 12 x 4-inch strips. Stack strips, then cut six 4-x 2-inch pieces, leaving stacks intact. Loosely stagger pieces in pan, cut sides up. Let rise in a warm place about 45 minutes or until nearly double in size.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake 35 min. or until golden brown. (If needed, cover bread with foil the last 10 minutes of baking to prevent overbrowning). Cool about 15 minutes. Remove loaf from pan and turn right-side up on cooling rack. Allow to completely cool.

While the loaf is cooling, prepare glaze. Drizzle with Cinnamon Glaze or Buttered Rum Glaze. Cool 20 minutes more.

Method for Cinnamon Glaze:

Stir together powdered sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and milk. If needed, add additional 1 T. milk. Drizzle over bread.

Method for Butter Rum Glaze:

Melt together butter, brown sugar, and milk. Stir in rum or rum flavoring. Add powdered sugar and whisk together until incorporated. Drizzle over bread.

Yields: 12 servings.

Miss NiNi

NOTE FROM Miss NiNi: My loaf was glazed with the Butter Rum Glaze which I thought added a complementary flavor to the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Note of caution though: Be sure to allow the bread to cool in the pan for the full length of time. Otherwise, it might pull itself apart in the “unpanning” process.
