FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A 28-year-old man has been accused of killing two brothers in Fort Dodge. Police say Tanner King, of Fort Dodge, was arrested Thursday night. Court records say he’s charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one of attempted murder. The records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for him. He’s accused of Monday’s fatal shooting of 37-year-old Marion and 34-year-old Eldominic Rhodes.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — New rules about sexual harassment of Iowa state government workers could make it tougher for taxpayers to learn about the cases and what the state is doing about the allegations. Ten Iowa lawmakers voted unanimously to approve the rules Thursday. The Des Moines Register reports the new rules say sex harassment complaint records can’t be released unless a court orders such. The old rules allowed state officials some discretion on any releases.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City man accused of ramming police cars on a chase that began in Nebraska has been sentenced to five more years in an Iowa prison. Woodbury County court records say 43-year-old Larry Johnson II pleaded guilty to felony eluding after prosecutors dropped an assault charge.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A trial has been scheduled in January 2020 in a gender discrimination lawsuit filed by a former school district official in northern Iowa. Mason City Schools’ former human resources director Jodie Anderson filed the lawsuit in July, alleging that men employed by the district were being paid more than women for the same categories of work when she examined salary structures in 2015.

AHSTW wins in 3OT

Sports

October 26th, 2018 by Jim Field

AHSTW struggled early but won a thriller 30-28 in triple overtime Friday night over Alta/Aurelia.

Four first half possessions led to three fumbles and a punt for the Vikings as they fell behind 14-0 at halftime.

After five straight three and outs by the two teams in the third quarter, Gabe Pauley carried three times for all 45 yards in a drive that ended with the senior going in from seven yards to cut the deficit to 14-7. A Warrior fumble in the fourth quarter led to another Pauley touchdown run of 18 yards to tie the game at 14-all. After another Warrior fumble set the Vikings up late, a 30 yard field goal try was blocked and the two teams went to overtime.

In the first OT period, Warrior QB Logan McCoy ran in from 4 yards out and a two point conversion made it 22-14 in fabor of Alta/Aurelia. Pauley answered with a 4 yard run in AHSTW’s OT possession and Drake Partridge caught a short pass to tie it again.

Neither team scored in the second overtime…AHSTW was stopped on fourth down at the one and the Warriors missed a 22 yard field goal try.

In the third overtime, Alta/Aurelia scored but missed the 2 point try, but after a Gabe Pauley 6 yard TD run tied it at 28, Blake Osbahr found Brayton Tuma on a short pass to the left and he just got in to the end zone to win the game.

Exira-EHK rolls to first round win over Stanton

The Exira-EHK Spartans set the tone early and ran away with a first round playoff win over Stanton 51-14 in Exira. The Spartans’ Jayden Goodwin picked off a Viking pass on their second play from scrimmage and they turned it into a touchdown two plays later on a 7 yard run by Cole Burmeister. That early sequence would set the tone for the rest of the night.

On the Vikings second possession they were forced to punt and a bad snap forced Drake Johnson to reach down to try to pick up the ball and his knee hit as he pick it up. That miscue gave the ball to Exira-EHK at the Viking 15 yard line. Two plays later Jayden Goodwin found paydirt  on a 4 yard run and the Spartans lead grew to 14-0.

The Spartans scored to start the second quarter on a 65-yard pass from Tyler Petersen to Trey Nelson and then immediately got the ball back on a squib quick recovery that the Vikings mishandled. The Spartans capped that possession with a 16-yard hookup from Petersen to Creighton Nelson. A two point conversion made it a 29-0 lead for the Spartans. Stanton got on the board with a 17-yard pass from Colby Royal to Easton Hultmann. The two point hookup from Drake Johnson to Keygan Day made it 29-8. The Spartans would add a 24-yard touchdown pass from Petersen to Trey Nelson and a recovered muff punt in the end zone by Nelson before half to make it 44-8.

Each team would add just one more score in the second half as the game ran away quickly with the 35-point rule in effect.

Exira-EHK improved to 9-1 with the win and will move on to the Quarterfinals next Friday night. The Spartans will host the Fremont-Mills Knights next week in a rematch of a week one game that the Spartans won 45-27. The Knights advanced with a 61-8 win over Lenox.

Listen to a postgame interview with Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen and running back Cole Burmeister below.

Saturday is National Drug Take Back Day

News

October 26th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Saturday is the second of two National Prescription Drug Take Back Days. The interim director of the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy, Dale Woolery, says you should check your medicine cabinets and take in any medication you don’t need. He says some people flush the pills down the toilet, but he says that creates problems with the medication getting into the groundwater.

He says properly disposing of the prescription drugs also ensures they won’t be stolen or illegally used by someone. The 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows 53 percent of people 12 or older who misused a prescription pain reliever obtained the substance from a friend or family member. Woolery says people have responded to the call to properly dispose of the drugs.

The first national day was held earlier this year and saw a lot of pills turned in. “In April Iowans got rid of over 12-thousand pounds, and that was a record-setting collection,” according to Woolery. Woolery says if you miss Saturday’s event or find yourself with excess medications throughout the year, there are now permanent take back sites available.

“We have 233 of those now across the state of Iowa — at least one in each county — many counties with multiples sites. About are in local law enforcement centers, half are in pharmacies,” Woolery says. “The easiest way to find out where is the site closest to me is to go online and simple search Iowa-R-X-takebacks.” National Prescription Drug Take Back events will operate from 10:00 a-m until 2:00 p-m on Saturday at over 100 sites across Iowa.

Grassley says NY man arrested for phoning Grassley’s Iowa offices, making threats

News

October 26th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Senator Chuck Grassley says he was notified last Friday that a Long Island, New York man had been arrested for making a threat against Grassley.

Grassley has been a member of congress since 1975.

Grassley cites the harassment fellow senators Ted Cruz and Mitch McConnell got when they went out to eat in the D-C area with their wives.

Grassley says the New York man who was arrested a week ago for threatening Grassley’s life also made threats over the phone to Senator Susan Collins of Maine.

Young and Naig in Atlantic, Friday

Ag/Outdoor, News

October 26th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Iowa 3rd District Congressman David Young and IA Ag Secretary Mike Naig were in Atlantic, Friday afternoon for a tour of the new Elite Octane Ethanol Plant, as part of their “Harvest Tour” across southwest Iowa. They started at Landess Co-Op in Yale and proceeded to a cattle feedlot near Fontanelle, before their stop in Atlantic. Prior to his visit, Naig spoke with KJAN News. He said they’re “Working their way through the supply chain and checking on folks as they’re progressing through the Fall, and the harvest is well underway. Naig spoke of the challenges farmers have been facing.

Naig said also, there’s a lot of work that gets done after the crop is in the bin. Livestock producers have a lot of work ahead of them as well.

The prices crop producers get for their product and the market for those products have been a top concern for people Naig has spoken with, especially he says, with regard to the impact of trade embargoes and the stalled Farm Bill.

Naig said it’s certain no action will be taken on the Farm Bill until after the election on Nov. 6th, but there’s still hope.

As far as the election is concerned, Naig said he’s tried to get out and convey a positive vision to the voters, as opposed to his opponents’ negative campaign ads.

His Democrat opponent is Tim Gannon. Libertarian Party candidate Rick Stewart is also in the running to Iowa’s next Secretary of Agriculture, but Naig didn’t mention him in his time speaking with KJAN News.
