Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has quickly reworked the roster since taking over last summer, and seemingly every move has paid off. There were the free-agent acquisitions, the aggressive trades and even the draft picks that raised some eyebrows. And now, the Chiefs are in control of the No. 1 seed for the AFC playoffs with seven games to go.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have returned from a long weekend off to face the daunting challenge of playing the Chiefs in Kansas City on Sunday. The Chiefs opened as 15-point favorites and the line grew to 16 ½ points on Monday. The Cardinals made several roster moves during their bye week, including releasing former starting QB Sam Bradford.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s Devine Ozigbo needs 204 yards over the final three games to become the school’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Ameer Abdullah in 2014. Ozigbo began the season No. 3 on the depth chart and wasn’t a starter until the fourth game. Ozigbo originally made a verbal commitment to Iowa State in 2014. He changed his mind when Nebraska started showing interest because he had seen what Rex Burkhead accomplished in Lincoln. Ozigbo and Burkhead grew up in the same area of Texas.

Harvest moves ahead again with dry week

Ag/Outdoor, News

November 5th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Farmers made good use of dry weather again last week to advance the harvest. The corn harvest went from 49 to 72 percent complete last week as there are nearly six dry days for fieldwork. The corn harvest is three days ahead of last year — but still one day behind the five-year average.

The soybean harvest moved form 71 to 88 percent complete by the end of the week Sunday. The bean harvest is still seven days behind the five-year average, or the same as it was last week.

The report shows central Iowa farmers have combined 80 percent of their corn for grain while those in the southwest part of the state have only 55 percent of their corn out of the fields.

Sports

November 5th, 2018 by admin

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State freshman QB Brock Purdy was named the Big 12’s Co-Newcomer of the Week, announced today by the league’s office.

It marks the third time in the last four games Purdy has won or shared the honor.

A native of Gilbert, Ariz., Purdy helped lead the Cyclones to a 27-3 win over Kansas on Saturday by throwing for 263 yards and three touchdowns. Purdy completed 16-of-23 passes with no interceptions and also rushed for 27 yards.

Purdy connected with wide receiver Hakeem Butler on a pair of bombs in the first quarter to give the Cyclones a 14-0 lead. He hit Butler on scoring strikes for 83 yards, tying for the fifth-longest pass play in school history, and 51 yards.

Purdy has been sensational since taking over signal-calling duties in the last four games, averaging 271.3 yards passing, 320.5 yards of total offense and completing 66.3 percent of his passes.

Purdy has accounted for 13 of ISU’s 18 TDs in its four-game winning streak. His 12 TD passes is a new standard for Cyclone rookies.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sophomore guard Lindell Wigginton has been announced as one of 50 players to watch for the 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy Men’s Player of the Year honor.

Wigginton is the Big 12’s top returning scorer after averaging 16.7 points per game as a freshman. Wigginton, a preseason All-Big 12 selection, scored 20-plus points in 13 games, including the final four games of the season.

The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native is one of six Big 12 players on the list.

A list of the midseason 30 team will be released on Feb. 13, 2019, followed by the 10 national semifinalists and four finalists on March 4, 2019 and March 19, 2019 respectively. AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior wide receiver Hakeem Butler has been added to the Biletnikoff Award watch list, announced today by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation.

Select voters of the award, given annually to the nation’s best receiver regardless of position, will trim down the list to 10 semifinalists on Nov. 12.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Butler has been a human highlight reel, leading the nation in yards per reception at 24.0.

His big-play ability has been on full display this season, recording nine of ISU’s 11 longest plays with eight receptions of 40 yards or longer.

Butler, who leads the team in receptions (33), receiving yards (791) and TD catches (8), has recorded four 100-yard receiving games on the year, including three-straight. He ranks 10th nationally in receiving yards per game at 98.9.

Five of Butler’s eight TD catches have gone for 48 yards or more and his eight TD snares ties for fifth on ISU’s season list. He currently has a streak of four-straight games with a TD catch, tying for the third-longest string in school history.

Against Oklahoma, Butler recorded a career-high 174 receiving yards and two TDs. In the Kansas win, he tied for the fifth-longest catch in school history with an 83-yard TD grab. He ended the KU game with 164 yards and two TDs.
