The Glenwood girls basketball team took advantage of the Atlantic Trojans 21 turnovers on their way to a 69-37 home win on Tuesday night. Glenwood opened the game up with a ten point lead by the end of the first quarter and lead 29-18 at halftime. Miscues then began to snowball in the second half with Atlantic struggling to consistently handle the Rams press. The Rams grabbed a 20 point lead by the end of the third and brought reserves in for a good chunk of the fourth quarter.

Glenwood was led by 16 points from Elle Scarborough, 11 from Madison Camden, and 10 from Brielle Smith. The Rams improved to 8-3 with the win and will next face St. Albert at the MAC Shootout on Friday night.

Atlantic was led by 11 points from McKenzie Waters and 8 from Baylee Newell. The Trojans are now 1-11 and will travel to Lewis Central on Friday.

Mason drops 25 points as Baylor beats No. 20 Iowa State 73-70

WACO, Texas (AP) — Makai Mason is getting more aggressive on the floor for Baylor, wanting to take shots and chasing after loose balls.
Mason scored a season-high 25 points, including five free throws in the final 38 seconds, and the Bears held on for a 73-70 victory over No. 20 Iowa State on Tuesday night.

“Yeah, it’s definitely been a process,” said Mason, the first graduate transfer ever to play at Baylor. “But, every game, I’ve felt like I’ve been a little more comfortable. Just learning our system as well.”

Iowa State (12-3, 2-1 Big 12) was coming off a 17-point home win over then-No. 5 Kansas three days earlier. The Cyclones had won five in a row and entered the AP Top 25 on Monday for the first time since the end of the 2016-17 season.

“It was a tough loss, this is a loss that should bother us a lot,” Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said.

“We just wanted to build off what we did on Saturday and kind of getting off to a good start in the league,” Cyclones forward Michael Jacobson said. “Yeah, it’s just disappointing for that reason.”

Mason played only one game the past two seasons at Yale because of foot issues, and missed his first three games at Baylor with a sprained right ankle. His 25 points are still shy of his career-high 31, scored for Yale against Baylor in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

“I’m fine with whatever he does, point-wise, this year,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said with a smile.

Devonte Bandoo made two free throws with five seconds left for Baylor (9-5, 1-1), and Iowa State had one more shot to tie the game but Nick Weiler-Babb’s defended 3-pointer from about 30 feet along the right sideline wasn’t even close .

Tristan Clark added 16 points for Baylor while Bandoo had 13.

Marial Shayok had 19 points to lead Iowa State. Lindell Wigginton and Jacobson had 11 each.

Mason made a tough short jumper with 1:48 left to tie the game at 66. After his tiebreaking free throw before missing another with 38 seconds left, King McClure grabbed the offensive rebound. That set up two more free throws by Mason.

There was also Mason’s 8-0 run earlier in the second half. He made a 3 with 9:29 left for a 54-52 lead, then after an Iowa State miss made a long 3 and stood with his right arm still in the air while watching the shot go in the basket. Mason then had a long rebound and fastbreak shot, though it only counted two points since his toe was on the line.

Iowa State, which is 8-0 at home this season, is back at Hilton Coliseum to play Kansas State on Saturday.
Baylor plays its second straight home game against a ranked opponent when No. 7 Kansas is at Waco on Saturday.

Senate GOP leader says sports betting has ‘good chance’ of becoming legal in Iowa

News

January 8th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The 2019 Iowa legislature convenes on Monday and odds are that lawmakers will consider a bill to make it legal to bet on sporting events.  “I think we have a really good chance to get sports betting passed here in the State of Iowa this year.” That’s Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver, a Republican from Ankeny who decides which bills get debated in the state senate. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last May that ALL states may legalize wagering on sporting events.

“As I travel to conferences across the country and meet with other leaders, there’s a lot of states that are looking at that right now,” Whitver says. “I think right now the conversations have progressed pretty in the state of Iowa. You have a lot of people interested in that bill seem to be on the same page and that makes it a lot more feasible this year.” Over the past couple of years, casino industry lobbyists urged Iowa legislators to prepare for the Supreme Court’s ruling and set up a system that would give the state-licensed casinos authority run sports book operations.

New Jersey and Delaware immediately legalized sports betting this past spring and Whitver says Iowa casinos seem the likely host for wagering on sports — if it’s legalized here. “We have a fairly good system set up with the casinos and our Racing and Gaming (Commission) overseeing gambling and so I think you’d largely use that structure as you look at how to implement sports betting,” Whitver says.

Iowa Lottery officials say several of the state’s largest lottery retailers want the option of offering a sports lottery — similar. perhaps, to the one now legal in Delaware. Whitver says it “makes more sense” to have sports wagering managed by the casinos. “There’s a lot of people that want a piece of the action,” Whitver says. “…The casinos are used to the regulation. They understand the process. The systems are all set up there. It would be totally different to allow the lottery to get into the gambling world and so, right now, I would be more focused on the casinos, but open minded to listen to what those who are advocating for the lottery would say.”

Estimates indicate Americans illegally bet hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars on sporting events every year. Bills to legalize sports betting in Iowa have been introduced in the Iowa legislature since 2010, but none advanced beyond the committee level.

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa man faces felony charges after officials say he drunkenly fired a rifle from the front deck of a camper hoping to bag a deer, but instead shot a woman in her home.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the shooting happened Friday evening in Wapello County.

The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office says a 73-year-old woman was cleaning her stove when she heard a loud noise and felt pain to the back of her head. When she saw that she was bleeding heavily, she drove herself to Ottumwa Regional Hospital. Doctors later removed a bullet from the back of her head.

Deputies arrested 34-year-old Lee Joseph Ryals, whom they believe fired a rifle from the camper at a deer while he was drunk. Ryals is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and reckless use of a firearm. Conservation officers have also charged him with several hunting violations.

Supreme Court won’t preside over challenge to state egg laws

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court has decided not to preside over legal challenges to laws in California and Massachusetts requiring larger living areas for some farm animals. A total of 15 states led by Missouri and Indiana had asked the court to accept original jurisdiction over the lawsuits.

President Donald Trump’s administration had urged it not to do so. It said the dispute over interstate commerce was best suited for a district court. The lawsuit against California targeted a law barring the sale of eggs from hens that are not raised in cages large enough for them to stretch out.

The other suit challenged a Massachusetts law requiring all eggs sold there to come from cage-free hens by 2022. That law also bars tight cages for pigs and calves.
