CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A trial date has been set for a man accused of killing an Iowa high school student almost 40 years ago. Cedar Rapids station KCRG reports that trial for 65-year-old Jerry Burns, of Manchester, has been set for Oct. 14 in Linn County. Burns has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Police arrested him Dec. 19, 39 years to the day after 18-year-old Michelle Martinko was killed. Her body was found the next day inside her family’s car at a Cedar Rapids mall.

MONTEZUMA, Iowa (AP) — A new trial date has been set for a former farmhand charged with first-degree murder in the abduction and stabbing death of 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts in Iowa. The Des Moines Register reports that a judge on Friday set trial for 24-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera on Sept. 3 in the Poweshiek County courthouse in Montezuma. Trial had been set for April 16. Defense attorneys said they needed more time to go through a massive investigation file from prosecutors.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Funeral arrangements have been set for a University of Iowa student who died this week in sub-zero temperatures that swept the Midwest. Television station KCRG reports that the funeral service for 18-year-old Gerald Belz will be held Monday morning at St. Jude Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Officials believe Belz’s death was weather-related. His body was found just before 3 a.m. Wednesday behind an academic hall on the Iowa City campus.

ADEL, Iowa (AP) — The last of several people charged in the starvation death of a 16-year-old Iowa girl has been sentenced to prison. Station KCCI reports that Josie Bousman was sentenced Friday to up to 14 years after she pleaded guilty to neglect and two child endangerment counts in the death of Sabrina Ray. Bousman lived in the home with the teen and was there when the teen died in May 2017. Sabrina weighed just 56 pounds at the time of her death.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Talen Horton-Tucker scored 15 points, Marial Shayok had 12 and No. 20 Iowa State held off Texas 65-60 for its fifth win in six games. Nick Weiler-Babb had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Cyclones. They hit their last four field goals to avoid the upset. Kerwin Roach led Texas with 19 points.

ATLANTA (AP) — It was a Patrick Mahomes runaway for NFL MVP. In his second pro season, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took The Associated Press 2018 NFL Most Valuable Player award. He received 41 votes from a nationwide panel of media members who regularly cover the league. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees got the other nine in balloting announced at NFL Honors.

ATLANTA (AP) — Towering tight end Tony Gonzalez is heading to the Hall of Fame, to be joined by three defensive backs who spent parts of their career trying to stop him. Champ Bailey, Ed Reed and Ty Law were also voted into the Hall, along with center Kevin Mawae.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Dedric Lawson had 25 points, Devon Dotson added 20 and No. 11 Kansas took out the frustration of a lousy week on No. 16 Texas Tech with a 79-63 victory. Davide Moretti led the Red Raiders with 14 points. Kansas ended a two-game skid while Texas Tech lost for the fourth time in six games.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Dean Wade was perfect from the field and scored a season-high 24 points to help Kansas State defeat Oklahoma State 75-57. Wade made all nine of his field goals, including three 3-pointers. Barry Brown added 18 points and Cartier Diarra added 10 for the Wildcats, who entered the night tied for the Big 12 lead.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas is exploring an appeal of the NCAA’s decision to declare sophomore forward Silvio De Sousa ineligible for the rest of this season and all of next. The decision by the governing body ends a three-month back-and-forth between the NCAA and the school over De Sousa’s eligibility this season. Kansas says it forcefully objects to the ruling. De Sousa’s guardian is accused of accepting money from a booster or agent during his recruitment.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Jeremiah Tilmon scored 19 points and Missouri fended off a second-half comeback attempt to defeat Vanderbilt 77-67. As the contest crept under four minutes with Vanderbilt down just five points, Missouri freshman Torrence Watson drilled a 3-pointer with the shot clock expiring. Jordan Geist knocked down a trey of his own on the next possession to put the Tigers up by 68-59.

Haldeman scores 15 in Northern Iowa’s win over Missouri St

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Spencer Haldeman scored 15 points, making all three of his 3-point tries, and Northern Iowa held off Missouri State 64-59 on Saturday night. Although there were five ties and 10 lead changes, Northern Iowa held a slight lead throughout much of the game. Haldeman gave UNI a little breathing room, making a 3-pointer for a 57-53 lead with 1:44 remaining. Tulio Da Silva made two free throws for Missouri State with 1:15 to go.

Haldeman added two free throws to make the lead four points again, Missouri State turned the ball over and UNI had possession with 58 seconds to go. Tywhon Pickford made a layup and, at 61-55, the Panthers had the biggest lead for either team since midway through the first half. Pickford later added 3 of 4 free throws and the Panthers held on.

Luke McDonnell had 12 points and five assists and Isaiah Brown added 12 points for Northern Iowa (10-13, 5-5 Missouri Valley). Da Silva scored 17 points and Keandre Cook had 15 points for Missouri State (11-12, 5-5).

Atlantic competed in Johnston and had no State qualifiers this year.

Chiefs QB Mahomes takes MVP and top offensive player awards

ATLANTA (AP) — Patrick Mahomes’ breathtaking breakthrough season earned him the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award. The Chiefs quarterback landed a pair of honors at NFL Honors on Saturday night, taking The Associated Press 2018 MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards. In his second pro season, Mahomes led Kansas City to its first AFC title game since 1993 with some of the most creative and clutch plays the league has seen in years.

“I’m so humbled,” he said. “This is just the beginning. We’ve got a long ways to go. “It is an honor. It’s a hard award to win. The next award I hope I can get is the Super Bowl.” Mahomes received 41 votes from a nationwide panel of media members who regularly cover the league. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees got the other nine.

With only one previous start, Mahomes entered the season as something of a curiosity in Kansas City after the Chiefs traded veteran Alex Smith to open up the job. It didn’t take long to erase any doubts as Mahomes led the Chiefs to their first AFC title game since the 1993 season, throwing for 50 touchdowns, 5,097 yards and had a 113.8 QB rating, trailing only Brees.

Mahomes’ ingenuity — the guy can throw from all angles and make plays inside and outside the pocket — energized the Chiefs’ fan base and excited fans across the league. “The play is never dead. He can find new ways to get you the ball,” Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce said. “It may look like a screwball, a slider here or there, but it’ll get to you eventually.”

Mahomes is the sixth straight quarterback and 11th of the past 12 years to win MVP. No Kansas City player had won the award since the Chiefs joined the NFL in 1970. Earlier, he was selected as the top offensive player, beating Brees 30 votes to 16. “Yeah, I mean, it’s awesome … I got put into a great situation,” he said. “I got to learn behind a great quarterback in Alex Smith. I got to be on a team with a lot of playmakers who helped me excel my game and make me look really good on a daily basis. And, then, to be able to go out there and win football games in front of a passionate fan base is something I get the luxury of doing.”

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who will play in Sunday’s Super Bowl against New England, took his second straight Defensive Player of the Year award. Donald, the only unanimous All-Pro this season and the first Rams player selected for top defensive honor, joins Lawrence Taylor and J.J. Watt as players to win the award in back-to-back seasons. Donald led the NFL with 20½ sacks.
“Any time you put a body of work into it and then it pays off,” Donald said, “and you’re rewarded for it, it means a lot. It’s a blessing.”

Chicago’s Matt Nagy, in his first season with the Bears, was voted Coach of the Year. Nagy has overseen the development of quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who blossomed in his second pro season, and saw a defense befitting the “Monsters of the Midway” dominate opponents at times. He is the fifth Bears coach to win the award, joining team founder George Halas (1963, 1965), Mike Ditka (1985, 1988), Dick Jauron (2001) and Lovie Smith (2005).

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was chosen the Comeback Player of the Year, following a lost 2017 season to a shoulder injury with a sensational 2018 campaign. Giants running back Saquon Barkley was the top offensive rookie, while the defensive rookie award went to Indianapolis linebacker Darius Leonard. Described by some as a “generational running back,” Barkley rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns behind a weak New York offensive line. He drew 26½ votes and edged Baker Mayfield. The Cleveland quarterback who was selected first overall in the draft, one spot in front of Barkley, earned 21½ votes.

Barkley also made a team-high 91 receptions for 721 yards, and his 2,028 yards from scrimmage led the NFL. For his work as defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears, Vic Fangio got the head coaching gig in Denver. He also won The Associated Press 2018 NFL Assistant Coach of the Year Award on Saturday. Philadelphia Eagles DE Chris Long won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for community service.

Atlantic/CAM sends 6 grapplers on to Districts, fall just shy of Regional Duals

Trojan LogoSectional wrestling action was held for Classes 1A and 2A on Saturday. The Champions and Runners-Up in each weight class advance to District wrestling competition next Saturday. The Champion and Runner-Up team at each Sectional advance to Regional Team Duals on Tuesday.

The Atlantic/CAM wrestling team will send 6 wrestlers on to District competition after competing in the Ida Grove Sectional in 2A. The Trojans had three champions: Cale Roller (220), Chase McLaren (138), and Garrett McLaren (106). The Trojans also had three Runners-Up advance with Connor Pellett (152), Kadim Stutzman (145), and Joe Weaver (120). The Trojans ended up coming just shy of making it to the Regional Team Duals. Sergeant Bluff-Luton was the Champion with 234 points and Harlan edged out Atlantic/CAM 209 to 206.

Harlan had the following champions: Ethan Lemon at 126, Oscar Olmos at 145, Carter Bensdorf at 170, and Derec Weyer at 285. The Cyclones also had two runners-up: Wyatt Obrecht at 132 and Joseph Arkfeld at 220.

Kuemper Catholic finished with a couple runners-up with Benjamin Schmitz at 113 and Shea Parkis at 126.
