UNDATED (AP) — Iowa sophomore Luka Garza started this season in recovery after a nine-pound benign cyst was removed from his abdomen. He might end it as one of the best players in the Big Ten. The 6-foot-11 Garza has been on a tear of late and it has helped the 20th-ranked Hawkeyes. Iowa visits Indiana today, on Thursday.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Barry Brown scored 18 points, Xavier Sneed hit a crucial 3-pointer with a minute to go, and Kansas State roughed up No. 13 Kansas 74-67 to snap a frustrating eight-game losing streak against its biggest rival. Sneed finished with 14 points and Dean Wade added 12 for the Wildcats, who maintained their place atop the Big 12. The Jayhawks fell to 1-6 in true road games this season.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Admiral Schofield and Grant Williams scored 13 points each as No. 1 Tennessee defeated Missouri 72-60 to extend its school-record winning streak to 17 games. Tennessee has the longest active winning streak of any Division I team. This latest victory also enabled Rick Barnes to match the longest winning streak of his 32-year head coaching career.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — After missing postseason play for the past three seasons, the St. Louis Cardinals believe they’ve struck gold with Paul Goldschmidt in their quest to play into October. St. Louis acquired the slugging first baseman from the Arizona Diamondbacks in December for pitcher Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, minor league infielder Andy Young and a 2019 draft pick.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Blake Seiler has been hired as an assistant coach on defense at West Virginia. Coach Neal Brown announced Seiler’s hiring Tuesday. Seiler spent 10 seasons at Kansas State, including last season as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Brown says staff assignments will be announced later.

Class 1A and 2A Regional Dual Team Wrestling was contested on Tuesday night. In Class 1A Logan-Magnolia and Missouri Valley both qualified for the State Dual Team Tournament. In Class 2A PCM, Monroe was the State Qualifier from the Atlantic host site. Creston O-M’s Regional at Williamsburg was postponed to tomorrow because of snow, as were a number of other sites in both classes. Class 3A Regional Duals were already scheduled for Wednesday. The Audubon Wheelers were able to deliver some payback to the AHSTW Vikings with a 65-44 win on senior night. AHSTW played a strong game in a 6 point win over the Wheelers back on January 4th. This time the Wheelers stepped up the defensive pressure and got the offense going in the second half to pull away for a comfortable win. Wheeler Head Coach Colleman Mullenix said he felt the team got into a better flow in the second half.

The Vikings led by one at the end of the first quarter but the Wheelers grabbed the lead midway through the second quarter and never trailed again. The Wheelers led by 7 at halftime and pushed the lead to 17 by the end of the third at 38-21. The 16-6 advantage in the third quarter put the game out of reach for the Vikings. Coach Mullenix was proud of the improved defensive effort against the Vikings and was glad to have a happy senior night.

Audubon was led by Kaiden Smith with 21 points and 19 from Tate Killeen. Audubon improves to 15-6 on the season and now have over a week off before their opening Class 1A District game against Logan-Magnolia on February 14th.

AHSTW was led by 14 points from freshman Raydden Grobe and he had 12 of those in the second half. The Vikings finish the regular season with an 11-10 record and will prep for their opening district game against Woodbine on February 14th.

The AHSTW Lady Vikes used a 20-10 advantage in the third quarter to blow the game open in a 72-48 win over Audubon on Monday night. The Lady Vikes started the game on a 10-0 run and led by 8 at the end of the first quarter.  They then took a 31-21 edge into halftime. The second half started much like the first as ASHTW scored the first 6 points of the half to take full command of the game. The lead ballooned to 20 by the end of the third and the Lady Vikes controlled the game the rest of the way.

The win was made even more impressive by the fact that Kinsey Scheffler had to sit out the night with an ankle injury suffered on Monday night against Nodaway Valley. Sheffler averages 12 points per game and had 10 in the first meeting against the Wheelers. Head Coach Steve Sauvain said they way they play helps players step in when someone goes down.

The Lady Vikes shared the ball very well on the offensive end and didn’t miss a beat with the shaken up lineup. Coach Sauvain thought his team is learning to improve with offensive decision making.

Kailey Jones, Claire Harris, and Claire Denning all finished the night with 15 points. Katie Anzalone dropped in 11 and Kate Wise finished with 10 to help the Lady Vikes improve to 14-6 on the season. AHSTW will play an opening round 2A Regional game on Saturday against Tri-Center.

Audubon was led by 21 points from outstanding freshman Aleah Hermensen. The Wheelers fall to 8-13 with the loss and will open up there 1A postseason run on Thursday in a pigtail game against Coon Rapids-Bayard.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Iowa State women’s basketball senior Bridget Carleton was named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top-20 List, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Monday night.

Carleton, who is leading the Big 12 with 20.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.3 blocks per game, has the Cyclones ranked No. 22 in the AP poll. Carleton is also named to the Cheryl Miller Award, Naismith Trophy Midseason list and a Senior CLASS Award nominee.

The Chatham, Ontario, Canada, native also ranks fourth in Iowa State history with 1,833 career points, while her 16.5 points per game scoring average sits in second in school history. Carleton also ranks third in blocked shots (110), fourth in steals (182), third in free-throw percentage (84.7) and fifth in free throws made (390).

The late season top-20 list is comprised of 20 student-athletes who are currently front-runners for the Wooden Award and for the John R. Wooden Award All-America Team. Wooden Award voters will announce 10 finalists following the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament.

Carleton was also added to the “Wade Watch” list of candidates for the 2019 Wade Trophy, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced Tuesday.

The WBCA will announce the four finalists for the honor in mid-March. The winner of the 2019 Wade Trophy will be announced April 4 in Tampa Bay, Florida — site of the 2019 WBCA Convention and NCAA Women’s Final Four.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Megan Gustafson has been named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top-20, ESPNW announced late Monday evening.

The list is comprised of 20 student-athletes who are front-runners for the John R. Wooden Award All-America Team and Most Outstanding Player Award. The list is chosen by a poll of national women’s college basketball media members.

Gustafson is currently ranked in the top-six nationally in eight statistical categories. She leads the nation in points per game (26.6), total points (585), and field goals made (245), ranks second in double-doubles (20) and field goal percentage (70.4), third in defensive rebounds per game (10), fourth in rebounds (277), and sixth in rebounding (12.6).

The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2019 John R. Wooden Award Women’s Player of the Year. The National Ballot, including 15 players, will be announced in early March. The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight. The winner of the award will be presented during the ESPN College Basketball Awards on Friday, April 12.

Gustafson and the No. 16/12 Hawkeyes return to action Thursday, hosting Michigan State. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. (CT) on BTN. Tickets are $12 for adults and free for youth and UI students.
