(Radio Iowa) — The start of the boys state soccer tournament has been moved back one day to Friday. Officials with the Iowa High School Athletic Association made the decision after several days of heavy rain in Central Iowa. Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines hosts the tournament. Storm Lake was set to open the 2A tournament on this ( Thursday) afternoon, but coach Ben Schekirke’s team will now play Lewis Central on Friday.

The semifinals will now be Saturday and the championship matches will be next Tuesday. Todd Tharp of the IHSAA says the decision was made after heavy rain Monday night. Tharp says the complex has received nearly nine and-a-half inches of rain since May 17th.

Tharp believes giving the fields an extra day to dry will help maintain them throughout the tournament. The semifinals will now be Saturday and the championship matches will be next Tuesday.

Tharp says they have contingency plans in the event there is more rain.

St. Louis will be the home team for both games, according to a draft of the 2020 preliminary schedule obtained by The Associated Press. The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are scheduled to meet in Major League Baseball’s first games in Europe, at London’s Olympic Stadium on June 29 and 30.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryce Harper hit his 10th homer, his 200th career double and drove in four to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to an 11-4, rain-delayed win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Scott Kingery and Maikel Franco hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning, and Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run shot two batters later to blow the game open.

CHICAGO (AP) — Six innings after being beaned with a pitch from Kansas City starter Glenn Sparkman, Tim Anderson doubled in the go-ahead run in the eighth, lifting the Chicago White Sox to an 8-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals. José Abreu hit a three-run homer, Yoán Moncada also connected and the White Sox swept a three-game series for the first time this season.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas freshmen Devon Dotson and Quentin Grimes withdrew from the NBA draft ahead of Wednesday night’s deadline, while Grimes also announced that he would transfer elsewhere for his sophomore year. The two guards went through various camps and combines to determine whether they would be chosen in this year’s draft. After consulting with their families and Kansas coach Bill Self, both of them decided that they would benefit from another year in school.

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy says defenseman Matt Grzelcyk was taken to a hospital after taking a hit to the head in their Game 2 loss in the Stanley Cup Final. St. Louis forward Oskar Sundqvist was sent off for boarding after he smashed Grzelcyk into the glass. The best-of-seven series is tied 1-1. Carl Gunnarsson’s goal in overtime gave the Blues a 3-2 win after Boston won the opener 4.2.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State has signed Penn State transfer Rasir Bolton (RAHJ-sheer BOWL-ton), head coach Steve Prohm announced Wednesday.

“We are really excited to add Rasir to our program,” Prohm said. “He had a tremendous freshman year at Penn State and we are looking forward to seeing him continue to grow here at Iowa State. Rasir has a chance to be a terrific player for our program. We can’t wait to get him on campus and get to work this summer.”

Bolton, a 6-2 guard who recently completed his freshman season, will have three seasons to play at Iowa State. He was second in scoring for the Nittany Lions, averaging 11.6 points in 2018-19. The Petersburg, Virginia native shot 36.1 percent behind the arc, connecting on 52 three-pointers. He was the Big Ten Conference’s top free-throw shooter at 87.6 percent, making 92 of his 105 free throw attempts.

Bolton scored a career-high 27 points against Colgate and topped 20 points four times. Against Colgate, he connected on 7-of-9 three-pointers.

Bolton was honored with Penn State’s Academic Achievement Award.

He played his high school ball at Massanutten Military Academy (Va.), where he led the team to the nation’s No. 1 prep school ranking. He scored more than 2,000 career points as a prep and was a four-star player according to ESPN.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association announced on Wednesday that the 2019 Boys State Soccer Tournament is going to start on Friday instead of Thursday. The change is due to poor field conditions at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines due to the recent heavy rains.

Play is now set to take place May 31st, June 1st, and June 4th. Brackets are currently set for the same game times and field assignments as Wednesday.

Lewis Central is in the Class 2A field and is set to face Storm Lake at 2:45pm, now on Friday.
