KEVIN FUNKE, 47, of Greenfield, died Tuesday, July 16, 2019, in Greenfield. Funeral services for KEVIN FUNKE will be held 10:30-a.m. Thursday, July 25th, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 2-until 7-p.m. Wednesday, July 24th, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle, with the family greeting friends from 5-until 7-p.m.; Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Burial is in the Greenfield Cemetery.  A luncheon will be held at the church following the committal services at the cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Kevin Funke memorial fund to be established by the family.

KEVIN FUNKE is survived by:

His daughters – Anna Marie and Olivia Lynn

His father – Ted Funke, of Creston.

His brother – Bryan (Kim) Funke, of Belmond.

His sisters – Lori (Mark) Wallace, of Greenfield; Lisa (Tim) Reiste, Tim of Linden, and Linda (Les) Caviness, of Orient.

His special friends: Fergie and Crush; other relatives and friends.

Audubon and SE Warren advance to 1A District 15 Baseball Final

The Audubon Wheelers and Southeast Warren Warhawks came out on top of their contests in a Class 1A District Semifinal doubleheader in Milo on Tuesday night. The Wheelers and Warhawks will meet back again on the same field in the District Final on Saturday night.

The Wheelers pulled off a bit of a surprise with an 11-1 victory over the CAM Cougars in the first game of the night. The Wheelers jumped out early to take a 1-0 lead in the first. They would then pile on 4 more runs in a breakout 5th inning before piling on 6 more in the top of the 7th to assure the win. Jackson Jensen and Skyler Schultes combined for a stellar night on the mound for the Wheelers. They gave up only 6 hits to the Cougars with 8 strikeouts (all from Jensen) and 4 walks and 1 hit batter. Gavin Smith and Aiden Alt both had 2 RBI doubles in the contest. The Wheelers improved to 13-13 and CAM ends their season at 24-6.

Southeast Warren woke up the cornfield beyond the left field fence with three homeruns in their 15-0 win over the Nodaway Valley Wolverines in the nightcap. The Warhawks got a 3-run shot from Brock Kyner to start the scoring in the 2nd. Bryce Hall hit a 2-run blast in the 3rd. Colby Page ended the game with a grand slam in the 4th. The Warhawks went around the order in the 4th and piled up 10 runs in the frame to prompt the mercy rule win. The Wolverines struggled on the mound by giving up 8 walks and hit 3 batters on the short night. Southeast Warren improved to 27-5 and Nodaway Valley ends the season at 15-11.

Southeast Warren will host Audubon on Saturday night at 7:00pm in Milo for the District Final. We’ll have coverage on KJAN with pregame at 6:45pm.

Iowa ranks among best states for affordable housing

(Radio Iowa) — A study from the National Low-Income Housing Coalition finds Iowa does well compared to the rest of the country when it comes to housing affordability. The coalition’s “Out of Reach Report” details how much it costs to rent a two-bedroom apartment in each state at a fair market rate. Abbie Gaffey, a program specialist with the I-S-U Extension, says the study shows Iowa has some of the most affordable rental rates in the United States.

“Iowa ranked number 45 out of the 50 states,” said Gaffey. “That means our housing is more affordable. The results for Iowa also show an Iowan has to earn $15.44 an hour at a 40-hour per week job working 52 weeks per year to afford the fair market rent of $803 for a two-bedroom apartment.” Hawaii has the highest rental rates in the country, with a two-bedroom apartment averaging over $1,900 per month, while Arkansas checks in at the lowest rate at $742 per month.

With Iowa’s minimum wage at $7.25 per hour, Gaffey says a person would need to work mulitple jobs to afford an average apartment. “The study shows that a person earning that minimum wage would need 2.1 full-time jobs to pay for a two-bedroom apartment and 1.7 full-time jobs to pay for a one-bedroom apartment,” said Gaffey.

She says the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area has overtaken other areas of the state as the priciest place to live. “The Omaha-Council Bluffs metro area is now the most expensive, followed closely by what’s traditionally been our most expensive markets in Iowa: Ames, Des Moines/West Des Moines and Iowa City,” said Gaffey. ”

Ames and Iowa City are university towns, so they are going to be more expensive, so the surprise to me was Omaha-Council Bluffs being less affordable than it had been in the past.” The study also finds about 29-percent of people in the state rent a place to live, rather than own. ELIZABETH SCHMIDT, 91, of Anita, died Tuesday, July 16th, at Caring Acres Nursing & Rehab, in Anita.  Memorial services for ELIZABETH SCHMIDT will be held on Friday, July 19th at 10:30 am in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Anita.   Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Burial in the Massena Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the family’s wishes.

Biden plan seeks to boost rural America through investments

MANNING, Iowa (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has released a broad plan to revitalize rural America through investments in agriculture, rural economies and infrastructure.

Biden said Tuesday in Manning, Iowa, a town of about 1,500 residents, that “we have to ensure we bring along everyone.” He says it “doesn’t matter if you live in a skyscraper in Manhattan, or here in Manning — your child is entitled” to all the benefits of being an American.

The plan builds on policies the former vice president has already released on health care and climate change. It sets the ambitious goal of making America’s agriculture industry the first in the world to achieve net-zero emissions.

It also includes a raft of policies aimed at bolstering rural health care access.

Report: Slick plastic sheeting led to flood barrier failure

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A new report released by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says an April flood barrier breach in downtown Davenport was caused by pressure from the swollen Mississippi River shifting a barrier with slick plastic sheeting under it.

The report, released Tuesday to Davenport city officials, says the sheeting became slick in the wet conditions, and a segment of the barrier overturned.

City officials say the public works department will make changes to its flood plan based on the report, including making changes to plastic sheeting installation and double-stacking flood barriers when the river height is forecast to reach 20 feet or higher.

Officials in the eastern Iowa city had already announced plans to build a bigger flood barrier in the wake of the April breach that sent floodwaters rushing into downtown streets.
