Former Boondocks Truck Stop reopens with new food offerings

News

July 23rd, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — A popular truck stop along Interstate 35 in northern Iowa’s Hamilton County is reopening after an eight-month absence. The former Boondocks near Williams is now the Jay Brothers Truck Stop and Circle S Motel. Parith Chaudhari is managing the truck stop, motel, and the soon-to-open restaurant. “You can get fuel and some good diesel prices out here and we have started the motel as well and we’re doing some renovations there,” Chaudhari says. “The restaurant, we’re working on.”

The former Boondocks Truck Stop closed in October of last year after 45 years in business. It was a popular place for law enforcement officers to get a meal and was also a haven for stranded motorists in times of adverse winter weather. Chaudhari was asked what interested him in the place, which is the fourth in the family’s chain. “It’s always about the location when you’re looking at businesses,” he says. “I came along this and thought, ‘Hey, this is a great opportunity.’ We have one in Nebraska, one in West Liberty and another one in Kansas and they’re all interstate properties.”

Unlike the typical diner fare at the old Boondocks, Chaudhari said the new restaurant will offer an Indian menu.  “We had great success with Indian food in Nebraska at our restaurant there and we thought this would be a great opportunity as well,” Chaudhari says. “We can give that a try and give customers something different.”

The restaurant is expected to open soon though no date is set.

Atlantic School Board meeting set for Wed. evening

News

July 23rd, 2019 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic School District’s Board of Education will meet 5:30-p.m. in the Middle School Conference Room. On their agenda is information with regard to a Board Retreat, topics for the Regular Board meeting on August 14th, New Staff “Meet and Greet” on August 19th, and School Board Election Candidate Filing, which takes place Aug. 26th through Sept. 19th.

The Board will act on approval of a bid for Middle School Chromebook peripheral tools in the amount of $137, 742.50 from 2ndGear, for 350 Dell 3100’s, carts, cases and licenses. Last month, the Board approved a bid from CDI Technologies in the amount of $119,121.46, for the 1-to 1 Middle School Chromebook initiative. The Board, however, was recently notified CDI is unable to honor their commitment in their ability to obtain 350 (3189 model) Dell Chromebook computers. Those are the same models the District has purchased for both the Middle School and Schuler. 2nd Gear was the second closest competitive bid. Superintendent Steve Barber says although the cost of the computers is $24,000 more, 2ndGear was $6,000 cheaper on the other, aforementioned items, so the difference ends up being $18,000 between the two bids, with a newer model of computer. The cost will come out of the District’s SAVE fund.

The Board will also act on Contract Recommendations for: Henry Hallgren, HS Government Teacher; Mandi Bauer and Emma Bireline, TLC Mentors; and Alex Bales, Drama/Fall PLay Co-Sponsor. They will also act on approving two resignations: Andrea Halterman, WA Para, and Nick Sandbothe, Mechanic.

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have recovered from a river in eastern Iowa a body believed to be that of a missing swimmer. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says the body was found Monday in the Cedar River just south of the Iowa Highway 1 bridge, about 3.5 miles southwest of Mount Vernon. The sheriff’s office says the body will be autopsied and positively identified by a state medical examiner. The office says the body likely is that of 31-year-old Jairo Mejia Jimenez, of Cedar Rapids.

A search for him began Saturday night after it was reported that he’d gone under the water and didn’t resurface while swimming near the dam upriver at Palisades-Kepler State Park.

Prosecutors say man justified in shooting intruder

News

July 23rd, 2019 by Ric Hanson

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Prosecutors say the fatal shooting of an intruder by a Sioux City resident was justified. Sioux City police said Monday that charges won’t be filed against Travis Gutierrez. He shot 19-year-old Jose Montanez on April 9, after Montanez broke into Gutierrez’s home. Police say Montanez was involved in a disturbance at his home and was cut by broken glass as he jumped out from a second-floor window. He ran through alleys and then broke into Gutierrez’s home a few minutes later.

Police say Montanez was shot after refusing to leave and attacking and injuring Gutierrez. An autopsy report says Montanez had been using morphine and LSD at the time of the break-in.
