Iowa pheasant population survey begins Aug. 1

Ag/Outdoor

July 30th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

The extent of impact that a cold and snowy late winter and heavy rains and flooding in April and May had on pheasant nesting success will likely be seen when the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conducts its annual pheasant counts. The statewide survey takes place Aug. 1-15. The survey is conducted by Iowa DNR staff who drive 218, 30 mile routes on gravel roads at dawn on mornings with heavy dew. Hen pheasants will move their broods to the edge of the gravel road to dry off before they begin feeding, which makes them easier to count.

Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife research biologist for the Iowa DNR says “Conditions for the survey are important as the accuracy of the counts depend on the dew conditions when the routes are run.” What staff see when they drive the routes is anybody’s guess. Winter began mild but ended under heavy snow and bitter cold temps. Spring wasn’t much better – below normal temperature and heavy rain across much of the state. Not exactly a recipe for growing a pheasant and quail population.

Bogenschutz says “We started receiving reports of staff seeing pheasant broods in late May and hearing quail calls through the spring and summer which are both positive signs,” he said. “It will be interesting to see the survey results.” The August roadside survey has been conducted over the same routes since 1962. In addition to pheasants and quail, the survey collects data on partridge, cottontails and jackrabbits.  Results will be posted online at www.iowadnr.gov/pheasantsurvey by Sept. 10.  Iowa’s pheasant season begins Oct. 26.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes spent this past offseason riding horses on the beach, popping up at the Final Four and Stanley Cup Final, hob-knobbing with celebrities and being feted by late night talk show hosts. Indeed, much has changed for the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback since he showed up at Missouri Western State University a year ago.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cavan Biggio hit the go-ahead homer in the eighth inning, Randal Grichuk and Teoscar Hernandez also went deep, and the Blue Jays beat the Royals 7-3. Top prospect Bo Bichette singled in the first at-bat of his big league career for the Blue Jays, and Tim Mayza earned the win in relief of Thomas Pannone. Brad Keller gave up three homers in taking the loss for Kansas City.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Johnny Robinson, the former LSU standout-turned-star safety during the years of the AFL-NFL merger, finally is headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Robinson was passed over six times during the 1980s, but now will get to slip on that famous gold jacket as a senior committee nominee. He is the ninth member of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl 4 championship team to be inducted in Canton, joining Len Dawson and others.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Max Falkenstien, the affable and silver-tongued “Voice of the Jayhawks” who brought Kansas football and basketball into the homes of fans for six decades, died Monday. He was 95. The school announced his death in a statement. No cause was given. Falkenstien broadcast his first game in 1946 and was a staple for the Jayhawks until his retirement in 2006.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Keith Reaser hurt his Achilles tendon during practice and could miss the season. Reaser emerged as one of the stars of the brief Alliance of American Football and was likely to make the Chiefs’ roster. In other injury news from the team’s first padded practice, right tackle Mitchell Schwartz left early when his back locked up and wide receiver Gehrig Dieter departed practice with back spasms.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Akira Levy has joined the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team as a transfer from Missouri in a return to her home state. The 5-foot-8 guard tore a ligament in her right knee in February. Vanderbilt coach Stephanie White says Levy will spend this season getting healthy. She started four games for Missouri last season. She originally chose Missouri over Vanderbilt and Ohio State.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded left-hander Zac Rosscup to the St. Louis Cardinals for cash. Rosscup is headed to his fourth team this season after the Dodgers designated him for assignment two weeks ago. Rosscup is 2-0 with a 5.00 ERA in 28 appearances this season.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are investigating a shooting in Iowa City that injured an officer and a suspect. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says the incident started about 3:30 p.m. Monday when Iowa City police were called to an alleged shoplifting. Officers found a suspect nearby and as the matter was unfolding, an officer was struck multiple times. The weapon was later determined to be a BB gun. The officer also fired his gun and hit the suspect. Both were in stable condition at a hospital.

HARPERS FERRY, Iowa (AP) — A northeast Iowa farmer has died after being attacked by a bull. Allamakee County Sheriff Clark Mellick says someone called authorities Sunday to report the attack at a farm pasture northwest of Harpers Ferry. First responders found the body of 59-year-old John Francis Conway in a wooded pasture area. Deputies determined a bull had attacked him Saturday night. Deputies killed the bull because of its aggressive behavior.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A Dubuque woman accused of stealing from her elderly mother has pleaded guilty. The Telegraph Herald reports that 55-year-old Susan Shea pleaded guilty to felony abuse of a dependent adult. Her sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 16. A court document says investigators estimate that around $140,000 or more had been taken from Shea’s mother from December 2016 through January 2018.

PERCIVAL, Iowa (AP) — A third bout of flooding is taking a toll on people who operate businesses along Highway 2 in southwestern Iowa. They rely on Interstate 29 traffic and on travelers being able to cross a nearby Missouri Bridge over to Nebraska. But roadways leading to their community were covered with water and the businesses were inundated in mid-March after levees failed. More flooding occurred in late May. One business owner, Alicia Chrastil, who also was flooded out in 2011, doesn’t see herself returning.
