JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — After devastating flooding in recent years, some U.S. states are starting to put more money into efforts to guard against rising waters.

An analysis of preliminary data by The Associated Press has identified about $1.2 billion in damage to roads and bridges, utilities and other public infrastructure from storms and flooding during the first half of 2019.

The Army Corps of Engineers has estimated it will cost an additional $1 billion to repair hundreds of damaged levees in the Missouri River basin.

States such as Arkansas, Iowa and Missouri already have put more money toward flood recovery and protection efforts. Voters in Texas will decide later this year whether to amend the constitution to create a $793 million fund for flood control. Other states also are considering new flood protections.

Members of the CAM School District’s Board of Education will meet in a regular session 6:30-p.m. Monday (Aug. 12th), at the CAM High School Media Center. On their agenda is numerous action items, including:

• Approval of resignations and contracts.
• Approval of Boyd Jones – facility study contract.
• Approval of a Daycare agreement.
• Approval of Open Enrollment applications.
• Discussion/action with regard to School Board Election filing timeframe.
• Approval of fundraisers for the 2019-20 school year.
• Approval of the Homecoming Fun Run.
• Approval of Salvage Bus Bid.
• Approval of an Athletic Trainer agreement.
• Approval of Instructional Support Levy (ISL) Resolution to consider continued participation in the Instructional Support Program.
• And, Approval of Superintendent/Board Goals.

Prior to adjournment, the Board will present their reports to the Superintendent.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reports a traffic stop at around 2-a.m. today (Sunday), resulted in charges against a Nebraska woman. Deputies stopped a Jeep Grand Cherokee for speeding, and upon further investigation charged the driver, 28-year old Elizabeth Field, of Fremont, NE., with Driving Under Suspension. Field was also cited for speeding.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A man accused of fatally punching a Sioux City resident is scheduled to enter a plea in the case. The Sioux City Journal reports that a plea and sentencing hearing has been set Monday for 25-year-old Ray Avila. Sioux City police say Avila became involved in an altercation on July 29, 2018, between Juan Espinoza and Peter Johnson. Police say Johnson suffered a skull fracture when Avila knocked him to the pavement. Johnson later died.

STORM LAKE, Iowa (AP) — A northwestern Iowa school librarian and art teacher has been accused of stealing more than $2,000 from two school fundraising events. The Sioux City Journal reports that 50-year-old Susan Slagle-Boyd, of Storm Lake, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of theft. Police say officers were called to St. Mary’s Catholic School on Thursday after school officials discovered money collected from two book fairs missing.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — The eastern Iowa city of Cedar Rapids is preparing for its annual Urban Deer Hunt, which allows some deer hunting inside city limits. This year’s season opens on Sept. 14 and runs through Jan. 10. Hunting is limited to those using archery equipment, and participants must complete a bow hunter’s class, attend an urban deer hunting rules and regulations class, pass an annual proficiency test and complete a special application before being issued a permit for the urban hunt.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A Waterloo woman has pleaded guilty for her role in her 4-year-old daughter’s death and has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. The Courier reports that 34-year-old Kristi Amber Buss pleaded guilty Friday to three felony charges: neglecting a dependent person, child neglect resulting in serious injury and involuntary manslaughter. She had originally been charged with child endangerment causing the death of her daughter, 4-year-old Gracie Buss.
