KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Local product John Means won back home with seven strong innings, Hanser Alberto got a career-high five hits and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 14-2. Pedro Severino had four of the Orioles’ 21 hits in their highest-scoring game of the season. Jonathan Villar stole three bases, including a swipe of home when the Royals tried to pick him off third base. Jorge Soler hit his 38th home run, tying the Royals record set by Mike Moustakas in 2017.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — David Glass and his family have agreed to sell the Royals to an ownership group led by Kansas City entrepreneur John Sherman in a deal that is expected to be worth about $1 billion. The Royals announced the sale just days after word began to leak the Sherman group was closing in on an agreement. Sherman and his co-investors will become the third owners since another local businessman, Ewing Kauffman, founded the club in 1969.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals are set to play back-to-back doubleheaders this weekend after their series opener at Busch Stadium was postponed because of rain. The Reds and NL Central-leading Cardinals will now play day-night doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Scott Frost’s second year at Nebraska begins against South Alabama. All indications are that his turnaround project is heading in the right direction. The 24th-ranked Cornhuskers are projected to be one of the most improved teams in the nation. Even though they finished 4-8 following an 0-6 start, they’re in the preseason Top 25 for the first time since 2014 and a popular pick to win the Big Ten West.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A nonprofit group is expressing concern about the reinstatement of Nebraska’s softball coach, who had been placed on administrative leave after player complaints. The College Athlete Advocacy Initiative issued a statement supporting players who complained about the behavior of head coach Rhonda Revelle and others. The group says players complained of verbal and psychological abuse, fat-shaming, excessive practice time and disregard of injuries. Revelle was reinstated earlier this week.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A supervisor with Iowa’s state Public Defender’s Office has a part-time side job as a local police officer, creating a potential conflict of interest. Michael Adams is supervisor of the special defense unit, which is appointed to defend low-income defendants in complex criminal cases statewide. But since 2008 he has also served as a part-time reserve police officer in the city of Colfax. The potential conflict of interest surfaced this month in a murder case.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The former head of the Iowa Department of Human Services has filed a complaint with the state seeking $2 million for wrongful discharge. Jerry Foxhoven says in documents filed Thursday with the State Appeal Board that Gov. Kim Reynolds, her chief of staff and legal counsel fired Foxhoven on June 17 as he questioned whether it was legal for the DHS to pay the salary of a governor’s staffer who had moved from the agency to the governor’s office.

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A fire on the roof of a prison in Fort Dodge appears to be under control. The Iowa Department of Corrections says the fire was reported about 2 p.m. at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility. Officials believe the fire started on the roof of a prison housing unit where contractors were making repairs. Local fire officials say the fire appears to be under control. The Corrections Department says all prison staff, contractors and inmates are accounted for.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Democrats’ plans for virtual presidential caucuses in Iowa and Nevada are effectively dead as Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez said Friday the results would be vulnerable to hacking and abuse. The two states had submitted plans for telephone voting as part of a national Democratic effort to increase participation in the 2020 nominating fight. But Perez says “there is no tele-caucus system available that meets our standard of security and liability.”

Atlantic football opens with strong 49-13 win over Saydel

Sports

August 30th, 2019 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans football team opened up the 2019 season with a strong performance in a 49-13 win over Saydel at the Trojan Bowl. Atlantic came out firing early after the opening kickoff was returned for a touchdown before being called back on a penalty. Tyler Moen made up for that penalty immediately with an 89 yard touchdown run to begin a 35-0 first quarter for the Trojans. They would end up leading 42-7 by halftime and rolled to the win.

Moen finished with 191 yards on just 6 carries with 4 touchdowns. The Trojans outgained the Eagles 304-177 on the night. 260 of those yards were on the ground for Atlantic.

Next up for the Trojans they will travel to face the Creston O-M Panthers. We’ll have coverage of that game on KJAN.

Fremont-Mills strikes quick and runs away from Exira-EHK

Sports

August 30th, 2019 by admin

The Fremont-Mills Knights scored on the second play of the game and kept hitting on big plays to race away from Exira-EHK in a 50-2 win Friday night in Tabor. Knights running back Seth Malcom scored the first three touchdowns of the game, as the Spartans squandered two early scoring chances.

The Spartans drove the ball inside the ten yard line twice in the first quarter and came up empty both times. The first ended on an interception by Fremont-Mills Defensive Back Colton Hauschild. The second time the Spartans pushed themselves back with a couple of procedure penalties and ended up turning it over on downs.

The Knights led 44-0 by halftime and would tack on one last score in the second half. The Spartans’ 2 points came off a Fremont-Mills mistake on the first drive of the second half. A bad snap went over the head of Knights QB Colton Hauschild and he fell on it in the endzone, resulting in the safety.

Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen said he was disappointed with the effort and the execution. He said he knows the Spartans are a much better team then they showed on Friday night and they are ready to get back to work to host Sidney next week. Fremont-Mills travels to face the Audubon Wheelers next week.

Pump prices are lower this year for holiday than last

News

August 30th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Many people are using the Labor Day holiday as their last getaway of the summer. Triple-A Iowa’s, Mark Peterson, says you’ll be happy when you gas up. “These are some of the lowest prices we’ve had in two to three years,” according to Peterson. He says everything has worked well to keep the prices from going up — including no major summer issues with supply.

“Production has remained strong and robust as we are moving along,” Peterson says. Peterson says the average cost of a gallon of gas in Iowa is two-dollars, 42 cents. “Last year about this time it was two-75. In 2017, two-49, so this is kind of a surprise. You’ll want to take advantage of it now — fill up those tanks — because you never know what can happen,” Peterson says. Peterson said it’s a possibility we could see a jump in gas prices in a few weeks with a little end of the summer bump in demand.

He says he then expects things to level off or prices could possible drop. Peterson says there are some intangibles — like the hurricanes and the situation in the Middle East that could impact prices. For now he says you can enjoy the lower prices.
