TJ boys come in 2nd at Missouri River Conference Cross Country Meet

The Missouri River Conference Cross Country meet was held on Friday night in LeMars. Bishop Heelan won the girls race and Sioux City North won the boys title. CB Thomas Jefferson was 2nd in the boys race, led by Wimach Gilo who finished 3rd place. Abraham Lincoln was 6th on the boys side. The Abraham Lincoln girls finished 6th and Thomas Jefferson was 7th in the girls race. Hayleigh Vandervelde of Abraham Lincoln was the top area girls runner in 18th.

Kaia Downs of Sioux City East won the girls title. Yemane Kifle of Sioux City North was the boys winner.

Broers and Baudler lead Nodaway Valley to strong performance at Mt. Ayr XC meet

The Nodaway Valley girls picked up a team title and the boys came in 2nd at the Ron Landphair Cross Country Invitational in Mount Ayr on Thursday. The Maryville boys were champs. The Wolverines swept the individual titles with Sophia Broers winning the girls race and Josh Baudler capturing the boys race victory.

Convicted child killer from Ames dies in prison

(Radio Iowa) — An Ames man who was found guilty in 1976 of murdering his two-year-old son has died of what officials at the state prison in Clarinda believe were natural causes.
A Story County jury convicted Thomas Earl Seehan of first-degree murder after an eight-day trial. Seehan, who was going through a divorce and seeking custody of his son, smothered the boy to death in December of 1975. The next day, he went to his wife’s workplace and held her hostage for several hours before surrendering. His attorney argued Seehan was insane at the time.

The prosecutor in the case was Ruth Harkin, who was the first woman to be elected as a county attorney in Iowa. Seehan unsuccessfully appealed his conviction. The Iowa Supreme Court and a federal appeals court rejected the argument the jury was inappropriately influenced by Harkin’s visible pregnancy when she spoke of Seehan’s dead son in court.

Seehan was sentenced to life in prison on the first-degree murder charge. He died at the age of 69, after more than 43 years in prison. An autopsy will be performed to confirm the cause of his death.

Shots fired – 2 officers down in Stuart/active shooter in a residence

KJAN News has learned two officers were shot in Stuart late this (Thursday) evening. Multiple law enforcement agencies are on the scene or responding, along with EMS personnel. The incident began at around 10:45-p.m.

According to various reports, at least two suspects are reportedly barricaded in an apartment at the Summit Street Apartments, at 52 S.W. Seventh St. in Stuart. At least one of the suspects was armed, and one is said to have been injured.

Iowa State Patrol negotiators were enroute. Information is still very fluid at this time.

Van Meter girls, Des Moines Christian boys win WCAC Cross Country Titles, ACGC’s Crawford grabs girls Title

The Van Meter girls and Des Moines Christian boys cross country teams won titles at the West Central Activities Conference Cross Country Meet in Panora on Thursday.

Kate Crawford of ACGC was the girls individual champion with a time of 19:50. Panorama’s Ella Waddle was runner-up. West Central Valley’s Louden Foster continued a strong season with a win in the boys race.

Harlan girls, Lewis Central boys take Hawkeye Ten Cross Country Titles

The Harlan girls and Lewis Central boys cross country teams came out with Hawkeye Ten Conference Championships on Thursday at the conference meet in Creston. Lewis Central actually tied with Harlan in the boys team race with 83 points each, but the Titans won on the sixth runner criteria. Creston’s Braelyn Baker was the girls individual champion. Bennett Heisterkamp of St. Albert was the boys individual winner.

Atlantic was 4th in the girls team race and 3rd in the boys race. Ava Rush was the top girls runner for Atlantic in 9th place. Craig Alan Becker led the Trojan boys with a 3rd place finish.

AHSTW hosts Southwest Valley in match-up of improving teams on KJAN

The AHSTW Vikings (4-3) football team plays host to the Southwest Valley Timberwolves (3-4) on Friday night and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. It’s a match-up of teams that have improved throughout the season with a lot of youth on the field. Southwest Valley head Coach Anthony Donahoo said his team is treating this week like the start of a new season. The Timberwolves have nearly everyone coming back for next season so they are looking to build some momentum that can carry over to next year. Coach Donahoo said this meeting with the Vikings should be a good one.

The Timberwolves have been able to run the ball pretty effectively throughout the season with quarterback Brendan Knapp leading the option attack. Coach Donahoo said the big issue has been finishing drives.

AHSTW Head Coach GG Harris feels like his team has continued to improve throughout the season. There was a lot of turnover for the Vikings from last year’s State Runner-Up team and Coach Harris thinks everyone is settling well into their roles as they gain experience. He expects the Timberwolves to be a solid test.

Quarterback Blake Holst has thrown for 901 yards and 6 touchdowns this year for the Vikings, and Denver Pauley has led the ground attack with 602 yards and 6 scores. Jackson Woltmann has been another strong ball carrier for AHSTW with 508 yards and 4 touchdowns. Coach Harris likes the balance they have created on that side of the ball but he thinks the defense may be key this week. He is excited about the recent improvement on defense from his squad and knows they will need to play sound this week to stop that rushing attack.

The Vikings and Timberwolves will kickoff at 7:00pm in Avoca on Friday night. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on KJAN with the Dvorak Tire and Service pregame starting at 6:30pm. Bankers survey shows improved rural economy in October

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The latest survey of bankers in rural parts of 10 Plains and Western states showed an improved rural economy this month, but the ongoing trade disputes continue weighing on the economy. The Rural Mainstreet survey’s overall index climbed to 51.4 for October from 50.1 in September. Any score above 50 suggests a growing economy, while a score below 50 indicates a shrinking economy.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss, who oversees the survey, says federal crop support payments and higher grain prices helped boost October’s index, but noted that nearly three-quarters of bankers “reported continuing negative impacts from the trade war.”

The confidence index, which reflects bankers’ economic expectations six months out, slumped to a dismal 36.5 from September’s already low 42.9. Bankers from Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming were surveyed.

Audubon County Sheriff’s report (10/17)

The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office report 31-year old Johnna Renee Pasquale, of Audubon, turned herself into the Sheriff’s Office today (Thursday). Pasquale was wanted on an outstanding warrant for 2 counts of a Sex Offender Registry Violation. She appeared before the Magistrate and was released.

Tuesday, 35-year old Brandon Michael Barringer, of Brayton, was arrested for Driving While Barred. His arrest was the result of a traffic stop at around 1-a.m., at the intersection of Highways 44 and 71. Barringer was booked into the Audubon County Jail and released after posting a $2,000 bond.

On Oct. 6th, 20-year old Cole Alexander Burdine, of Glidden, was charged with OWI/1st offense, following traffic stop that occurred at approximately 3:15-a.m. on that date.  Burdine was booked into the Audubon County Jail and held until he appeared in front of the Magistrate and was released later that morning.

And, on Oct. 4th, Audubon County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 46-year old LaJean Fajen-Webb, of Elk Horn, also for OWI/1st offense.  She was transported to the Audubon County Jail where she posted a $1,000 bond and was released.
