St. Albert rides big runs to win over Riverside, punches ticket to State

Sports

November 5th, 2019 by admin

The St. Albert Saintes used some big runs to take control of the Class 1A Region 2 Final against Riverside on Tuesday night at Tri-Center High School. The Saintes came away with a 3-0 victory 25-19, 25-7, 25-19 and will head to the State tournament for the fourth time in five years.

The Bulldogs got off to a nice start on the night with a 5-1 lead to begin the opening set. It was a good back and forth battle for much of that set until St. Albert used a five point run to go ahead 18-16. Riverside got the next two to tie it up, but the Saintes ripped off 4 straight and 3 straight to seal the win.

The second set went a little differently. After a 3-3 start, the Saintes went on a 12 point rally to grab control of the set and moved on to a 25-7 victory.

The third set was largely a back and forth affair with 11 ties before St. Albert grabbed momentum with a 10 point run. The Bulldogs fought hard to the end but the Saintes ultimately won the match with a 25-19 set 3 score.

St. Albert Head Coach Angie Lantz said her team played with great confidence across the board.

St. Albert missed out on a trip to state last year with a five set loss in the Regional Final but made it to the Semifinals in 2016 and 2017. Coach Lantz said the girls were motivated to get back to the State Tournament.

The Saintes will play in the Quarterfinals on Wednesday evening at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

6, including children, escape from central Iowa house fire

News

November 5th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

RUNNELLS, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials say six people, including children, have escaped a house fire in Runnells. Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Heath Osberg told KCCI the fire broke out Tuesday morning. Several agencies responded, and Osberg says one person was taken to a hospital. Others were treated for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation.

Camp Township Fire Chief Craig Thompson says the fire began in the kitchen. Runnells is about 15 miles southeast of Des Moines. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Iowa man sentenced for torturing family dog

News

November 5th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) — A northeastern Iowa man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail — all but seven days of it suspended — for torturing the family dog and making his children watch a video of the torture.

The Buchanan County prosecutor’s office says in a news release that 42-year-old Jason O’Neil Johnson, of Independence, was sentenced Tuesday. He was found guilty by a jury in August of animal torture.
Johnson will spend only seven days in jail if he successfully completes a year of probation, psychological evaluation and treatment and 16 hours of community service.

Prosecutors say Johnson held down the dog, named Daisy, in May and repeatedly beat her with a belt and closed fists for chewing on a pair of sunglasses he had left out. Johnson made his son record the beating to send to his other children, whom he blamed for failing to securely kennel the dog.

Iowa woman charged in Nebraska fatality to stand trial

News

November 5th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. (AP) — An Iowa woman charged in the hit-and-run fatal crash that killed a pedestrian in northeastern Nebraska is set to stand trial in the case. The Sioux City Journal reports that 19-year-old Maria Gonzalez-Diego, of Sioux City, waived her right to a preliminary hearing on Tuesday. She now faces arraignment Dec. 3 on charges of vehicular homicide and failure to stop at the scene of a fatality crash. She will remain in custody in the Dakota County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

South Sioux City police say Gonzalez-Diego’s northbound vehicle hit 62-year-old Antonia Lopez De Ramirez the night of June 24 as she walked east across a street. Police say Gonzalez-Diego’s vehicle continued north. A Sioux City, Iowa, officer later found Gonzalez-Diego and arrested her.
