Sioux City man dies in shooting near city’s downtown

(A-P) A Sioux City man has died in a shooting near the city’s downtown. Police say 42-year-old Chad A. Thomas was killed in the shooting just after 10 p.m. Saturday. The Sioux City Journal reports police received calls about shots and a short time later a person returning home found an unconscious man on a sidewalk. The man had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at a hospital. The shooting is being treated as a homicide.

The Logan-Magnolia Panthers wrestling team racked up 228.5 points and won the Riverside Invitational on Saturday. The Panthers had 5 champions on the day: Barrett Pitt 285, Rex Johnson 220, Briar Reisz 152, Wyatt Reisz 120, and Sean Thompson 113.

Over 35 compete at Riverside Girls Wrestling Invitational

Over 35 girls competed at the Riverside Girls Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.

Some of the Individual Champions from the area included Ady Lundquist of Southwest Valley at 96-109. Aleigh Bean of Atlantic at 124-130. Olivia Diggins of Logan-Magnolia at 131-133, Allison Baxter of AHSTW at 146-158, and Iliana Yanes of Riverside at 177-250.

Maddy Fell of Atlantic was 2nd at 142-149 and Kenzie Hoffman was 2nd at 146-158 for the Trojans.

The Treynor wrestling team came out on top of the Lenox Invitational on Saturday. The Cardinals notched 176.5 points to take the team crown. Nolan Niesen placed 2nd at 138 and Mitch Lutz was 2nd at 145 to lead the Cardinals.

Nodaway Valley had three individual champions with Elliot Cooney at 113, Jaxon Christensen at 126, and Austin Wilson at 160.

Underwood grabs 8th place team finish at Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic, Atlantic-CAM finishes 22nd

Liberty, MO came away with the team championship at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic over the weekend at the Mid-America Center. Underwood finished in 8th place in the team standings, Atlantic-CAM came in 22nd.

Gable Porter of Underwood was an individual champ at 106 pounds and Nick Hamilton was a winner at 145. Stevie Barnes finished 3rd at 120 for the Eagles, Logan James was 4th at 138, and Blake Thomsen was 5th at 152.

Atlantic-CAM was led by Cale Roller’s 4th place finish at 285. Aybren Moore placed 8th at 113 pounds for the Trojans.

College World Series general admission tickets now on sale

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — General admission tickets are now on sale for the College World Series. The general admission ticket books contain 10 tickets for the College World Series, which will run June 13 through June 23 or 24 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.  Cost is $95 plus fees. Printed GA ticket books that might be given as holiday gifts can be ordered for standard shipping rates through Tuesday. For overnight delivery, they must be ordered by Thursday.

Paperless GA ticket books are available on NCAA.com/CWSTickets. Ticket books will be delivered electronically. They are accessible through an app or mobile website and transferable.
The ticket books can be ordered by phone by calling 402-554-4422 Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours are limited during the holidays. They also can be bought at the CHI Health Center Omaha box office.

GA tickets can be used at one game or in any combination at multiple games. Advance GA ticket books offer 40 percent per ticket savings over game-day purchases. GA tickets can be upgraded to available reserved seats on game days at the box office by paying the difference in price.

Joens explodes for 41 to lead Cyclones past Wright State

AMES, Iowa – Sophomore Ashley Joens poured in 41 points to lead Iowa State (7-2) past Wright State (5-4), 79-71, on Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. Joens’ 41 points are one shy of the single-game program record of 42 set by Tonya Burns on Jan. 18, 1984 vs. Nebraska, and are the most by any Cyclone since 2003.

Joens knocked down 12-of-23 attempts from the field and was once again phenomenal at the free throw line, making 15-of-16 at the stripe. Joens added 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals for good measure.

Iowa State returns home on Sunday, Dec. 22 to take on in-state foe UNI at 5 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. The game will be televised live on Cyclones.tv.
