LECLAIRE, Iowa (AP) — A train derailment has sent at least a dozen rail cars and tankers off their tracks in downtown LeClaire. The derailment forced police to shut down a nearby highway and send a hazardous materials team to the site. The derailment happened Friday morning along U.S. Highway 67, just a couple of hundred feet from the banks of the Mississippi River. Police closed the highway in both directions and asked people to avoid the area. Scott County Emergency Management planner Brian Payne says the derailment involved a Canadian Pacific train and that a hazmat team had been sent to the scene. Iowa risk pool, under fire for travel, seeks to block audit

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) —  A group that insures local governments across Iowa is going to court to try to block the state auditor from reviewing its spending, including travel to out-of-state vacation destinations. The Iowa Communities Assurance Pool (ICAP), which is owned by cities, counties and other governments, argues in a legal petition that it is not a “governmental subdivision” and that State Auditor Rob Sand has no authority to examine its finances. Sand’s office began reviewing the pool’s spending in October after The Associated Press reported that its directors have routinely held public meetings at vacation resorts in Florida every February and Michigan every August.

Iowa court: Automated speeding tickets not a public record

News

January 3rd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Supreme Court says names of car owners ticketed by automated speed cameras are not public records. The court considered a lawsuit filed by former Ottumwa police sergeant Mark Milligan who was ticketed in 2016 driving a city-owned car. He filed an open records request for names of car owners caught on camera and ticketed and those not ticketed. Officials driving government cars often aren’t ticketed. The city denied his request, but a judge ordered their release. The city appealed. The supreme court concluded Friday that speed camera tickets are city citations not filed in court and therefore aren’t public record.

KJAN sister station KDSN-FM to switch frequency Monday, Jan. 6th

News

January 3rd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

Denison, Iowa — After five decades on the air at 107.1, KDSN FM (in Denison) is making an historic move on January 6th to a new home on the radio dial- 104.9. KDSN — a KJAN sister-station, reaches listeners in eight western Iowa counties. Its family-friendly programming includes a popular blend of local news, sports, weather, farm, school info, community events, as well as great music “hits” from the late 60’s to the present. KDSN staff and on-air personalities are well known friends to thousands of Iowans throughout their broadcast area.

KDSN is fully integrated into the area’s sports, school, and agri communities. Local sports enthusiasts enjoy weekly Coach’s Corner broadcasts from eight schools and fans get live coverage and streaming of multiple high school events plus syndicated Iowa and Iowa State games. In addition to local news, KDSN has Radio Iowa, ABC News, and several farm and market reports each weekday.

KDSN has deep local roots and firmly believes in giving back to the community. Don Luensmann, Crawford County Memorial Hospital Executive Director of Marketing and Development, commented “KDSN is part of the fabric of community life in West Central Iowa. They leverage their popularity with listeners to benefit a variety of area events and demonstrate every day their commitment and support for the people who live and work here. It’s difficult to imagine a better media partner and friend than KDSN.”

The station plans to shut down the FM 107.1 signal on Sunday, January 5 to complete the engineering and tower work required to move to the new 104.9 frequency. This transition is usually complete in 3-6 hours barring weather or other technical issues. Should any delays occur listeners can tune to AM1530 for live updates or check the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/KDSNRadio/. The frequency change was negotiated when the station sold last year and will hopefully result in improved coverage after the move.

KDSN FM is a 6000 watt station broadcasting 24 hours a day. It is locally owned by Crawford County Broadcasting.
