4 people rescued from fire in downtown Dubuque building

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say firefighters rescued four people from a fire that erupted in a downtown Dubuque building. The blaze was reported around 12:30 p.m. Monday in a building that contained apartments and businesses. Three people were taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. A city news release says some occupants were trapped by smoke on the building’s upper floors and were rescued by firefighters using ground ladders. The fire started in a first-floor kitchen. Authorities say the flames were knocked down about 10 minutes after firefighters arrived.

Double Chocolate Pecan Clusters (1-28-2020)

  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine
  • 6 oz. package semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 4 oz. (large) package marshmallows (about 16)
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 cups coarsely chopped pecans (8 oz.)

In top of double boiler melt butter, chocolate chips and marshmallows.  Stir in cocoa after melted.  Remove from heat, stir in pecans.  Line 2 cookie sheets with waxed paper.  Drop mixture by teaspoonfuls onto paper.  Refrigerate for 2 hours.  Makes 3 dozen.  You may microwave first 3 ingredients in microwave bowl.

No. 18 Hawkeyes face pair of challenges in Big Ten race

No. 18 Iowa faces a pair of tests against ranked Big Ten teams to highlight the AP Top 25 schedule this week. The Hawkeyes visit No. 15 Maryland and host No. 19 Illinois. Those are two of the three games nationally that feature two ranked teams. The other comes in the Southeastern Conference, where No. 13 Kentucky and No. 17 Auburn meet in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Elite Eight game won by the Tigers. Top-ranked Baylor also plays twice this week, visiting Iowa State and hosting TCU.

Garza, No. 18 Iowa rally to beat Wisconsin 68-62

Luka Garza had 21 points and 18 rebounds and No. 18 Iowa rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to beat Wisconsin 68-62. The Hawkeyes trailed 57-45 with 7:13 to play before going on a 19-2 run. It was the 12th double-double of the season for Garza, who leads the Big Ten in scoring. CJ Fredrick had 17 points for Iowa. Joe Wieskamp had 12 points and 10 rebounds. D’Mitrik Trice led Wisconsin with 16 points and nine rebounds. Nate Reuvers had 13 points.

Creston Police report (1/28/20)

The Creston Police Department reports two arrests took place Monday, and a vehicle was reported stolen. Authorities say 48-year old Michael Williams, of Creston, was arrested Monday afternoon at the Union County Law Enforcement Center, on a Union County warrant for Violation of a Protection Order. Williams was being held in the LEC while awaiting a Bond Hearing. And, Monday night, 32-year old Dustin Hart, of Arcadia, WI., was arrested in Creston, for Public Intoxication. His bond was set at $300.

Monday morning, a Creston man reported to police, that sometime between 7-p.m. Sunday and 10:15-a.m. Monday, someone stole his white, 1999 Chevy Tahoe with Iowa blackout plates ITB 400. The vehicle, which was parked in the 1000 block of N. Division Street, was valued at $6,500.

Hy-Vee buying 6 former Shopko locations in Iowa

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Officials say at least six former Shopko locations across Iowa will reopen as Hy-Vee Dollar Fresh stores. Hy-Vee announced purchase agreements Monday for Shopko buildings in Cresco, Dyersville, Hampton, Oelwein, Vinton and Waukon. Hy-Vee intends to open the stores by late summer, after some construction work. The sale terms were not disclosed. The Dollar Fresh stores are designed for smaller communities. Wisconsin-based Shopko filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2019, citing “excess debt.” The company announced two months later that it would liquidate its remaining stores, because executives had been unable to find a buyer.

Atlantic School Board to discuss Transportation Incidents protocol Wed. evening

Members of the Atlantic School District’s Board of Education will meet 5:30-p.m. Wednesday, in the Middle School Conference Room. During their Work Session, the Board will discuss a “District Protocol for Transportation Incidents.”  The discussion falls on the heels last week, of an incident whereby a school bus slid into a ditch southwest of Atlantic, as the vehicle was backing out of a rural driveway. No injuries were reported.

In other matters, the Board will discuss a Needs Assessment/Culture & Climate District Survey, and a 2019-20 Amended Budget. A Public Hearing on the 2019-20 Amended Certified Budget is set to take place 6-p.m., Wednesday Feb. 12th, followed by the regular Board meeting. Immediately following tomorrow night’s (Jan. 28) Work Session, the School Board will enter into an exempt (closed) session, for the purpose of negotiating sessions, strategy meetings of public employers or employee organizations.
