Iowa seniors may want to see new 1040-SR federal income tax form

News

February 7th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The Internal Revenue Service is offering a new income tax form specifically for senior citizens, which could become popular in Iowa, as we have a greater percentage of older residents than almost every other state. Norman Penix, a spokesman for the A-A-R-P Tax Aid Foundation, says the new 10-40 S-R form is identical to the traditional 10-40 form, with just one exception. “The new form is really just a larger print version to make it easier to read for seniors to be able to fill out on their own,” Penix says, “however, AARP is willing to do their tax returns for them as long as they’re within our scope of work.”

The S-R, or senior, form is brand new for this tax season and the tax preparer had to give it a close inspection to see if anything else had changed, besides the font size. “Not that I can see,” Penix says. “I’m looking at the 1040-SR right now on the screen and on a paper copy. Really, it’s just a larger print version.” According to the I-R-S, you can use the 10-40-S-R form if you or your spouse were born before January 2nd, 1955. While A-A-R-P initially made a name for itself as being specifically for retired persons, Penix says they offer tax preparation help to a wide range of people, not just seniors. “We do do taxes,” Penix says. “We do not have an age requirement for AARP nor do we have an income requirement, however, we have a scope document that limits what we can do.”

Iowans can enter their ZIP code on the website — www.aarp.org/money/taxes — to find the nearest tax preparation site.

Corn and soybean production costs projected to drop

Ag/Outdoor

February 7th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — An Iowa State University report finds it will cost less to plant some crops this spring. Report author Alejandro Plastina says that includes the state’s two major crops. He says the cost of production will decline anywhere from three to four percent for both corn and soybeans. He says some of the inputs will cost more. “The increased costs are expected for labor, insecticide and corn seeds While the other categories are expected to go down — including for land costs,” Plastina says.

A drop in production costs does not mean farmers will make a profit on their harvest. “The cost of production is a big component of profitability — but on the other side — we have prices and that is something that farmers do not control, “Plastina says. “And currently there is a big uncertainty on where prices will go for the 2020 crop.” Plastina says the new trade agreements could have a big impact on profitability. “We have to wait and see what might happen with those and how those will be implemented,” according to Plastina. “On the negative side we have the coronavirus alert and we don’t know how that will impact trade for China in particular and the demand for soybeans.”

You can go to the extension department website to find the report on production costs. (www.extension.iastate.edu)

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Monika Czinano scored 23 points and Kathleen Doyle, with a school assist record, and Amanda Ollinger had double-doubles as No. 20 Iowa avenged an early Big Ten Conference loss with a 76-60 win over Nebraska. Doyle distributed a single-game record 15 assists with 15 points; Ollinger scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. The Hawkeyes (19-4, 10-2), who have won 33 straight at home, lost 78-69 at Nebraska. Their last home loss was to Nebraska on Jan. 28, 2018. Iowa outscored the Cornhuskers 22-13 in the third quarter to lead 57-45. Leigha Brown led the Cornhuskers with 20 points.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — University leaders have determined there’s not enough evidence to pursue charges stemming from allegations that University of Iowa marching band members were targets of abuse during last season’s football game at Iowa State University. Members of the Hawkeye Marching Band allege that they were subjected to racial slurs and other verbal abuse as well as sexual harassment during the Sept. 14 contest. Iowa Board of Regents President Mike Richards said in a news release Wednesday that the two universities’ presidents, lawyers and police chiefs had discussed the investigation and decided not to seek charges.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals head into spring training with a new outlook. The team was sold in the offseason to Kansas City businessman John Sherman and Mike Matheny was hired to replace retired manager Ned Yost. The moves come after the Royals lost more than 100 games for the second consecutive year. The Royals spent last season trying to usher the first wave of young players to the big leagues. Their development will be a major focus this season. So will the growth of the young pitchers still in the minors. Pitchers and catchers report to Arizona on Feb. 12.

UNDATED (AP) — Baylor doesn’t spend time pondering a few minutes in Alaska the first week of the season. The Bears have won 19 games in a row since blowing a late 10-point lead against Washington. They are now the only team that has been No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll three weeks in a row. They are unbeaten halfway through the Big 12’s 18-game schedule. Baylor is just ahead of No. 3 Kansas in the conference standings, with the difference being the Bears’ first win at Allen Fieldhouse. That is the only Big 12 loss for Kansas.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Jarron Cumberland converted a go-ahead three-point play with 3.5 seconds remaining to lift Cincinnati to an 80-79 win over Wichita State. Cumberland, the reigning American Athletic Conference player of the year, finished with 24 points. Keith Williams had 17 points for Cincinnati, which earned its fifth straight win. Chris Vogt added 12 points and three blocks, and Tre Scott had 11 rebounds. Jaime Echenique had 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Shockers. Dennis added 16 points and Jamarius Burton had 13 points.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:40 a.m. CST

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Associated Press is unable to declare a winner of Iowa’s Democratic caucuses. Following the Iowa Democratic Party’s release of new results late Thursday night, Pete Buttigieg leads Bernie Sanders by two state delegate equivalents out of 2,152 counted. That is a margin of 0.09 percentage points. However, there is evidence the party has not accurately tabulated some of its results, including those released late Thursday that the party reported as complete. The AP’s tabulation of the party’s results are at 99% of precincts reporting, with data missing from one of 1,765 precincts, among other issues.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders will emerge from Iowa’s Democratic caucuses with the most delegates to the party’s national convention, regardless of which one eventually wins the contest. According to The Associated Press delegate count, Buttigieg and Sanders have each won at least 11 national delegates, with a handful of delegates still to be awarded. Elizabeth Warren has won at least five delegates, while Joe Biden has won at least two and Amy Klobuchar has at least one. Iowa will award 41 pledged delegates to the Democratic National Convention this summer.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Will the Iowa caucuses ever wrap up? Now the chairman of the Democratic National Committee is calling for a “recanvass” of the results. Party leader Tom Perez tweeted Thursday that “enough is enough” after three days of technical issues and delays. Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders are nearly tied for the lead after the delays. Both candidates have declared themselves victorious in Monday’s contest. The Associated Press said Thursday that it is unable to declare a winner in the contest. The Iowa Democratic Party suggested it may not comply with Perez’s request, issuing a statement that said it would conduct a recanvass if one was requested by one of the candidates.

AKRON, Iowa (AP) — Factory livestock farms are spreading across rural America, raising concerns about environmental damage and health risks for people living nearby. An industry once based on small, independent farms is evolving into large operations housing thousands of animals under one roof. The change is helping make beef, poultry and pork more affordable. But animal waste from the mega-farms has fouled waters. The enclosures spew air pollutants that promote climate change and are implicated in illnesses such as asthma. The stench of manure can make life miserable for people nearby. The spread of corporate animal farms is turning neighbor against neighbor in town halls and courtrooms across rural America. Iowa is a major battleground as the top U.S. producer of swine and egg-laying chickens.

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcat men’s basketball team thumped the visiting Central Missouri Mules, 81-47.

The Bearcats won their 13th straight game and moved to 21-1 overall. The Bearcats are now 11-1 in MIAA and have won 46 of their last 47 home league contests. Central Missouri falls to 9-12 overall and 4-8 in MIAA play.

Northwest extended its home-court win streak to 29 in a row. Northwest has won 67 of its last 69 home games overall.

Northwest made seven of its first 10 three-pointers to build a comfortable 31-14 lead over Central Missouri. Redshirt freshman Luke Waters made his first four shots from the field and tallied 11 of Northwest’s first 22 points. Waters would later find himself in foul trouble which limited him to only 13 points in 18 minutes of action.

The Bearcat scoring duo of junior Ryan Hawkins and sophomore Trevor Hudgins were spot on again. Hawkins collected his fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds. Hawkins went 11-of-15 from the field and was 5-of-8 from distance. Hudgins earned his 13th 20-point scoring contest on the season with 20 points and six assists. Hudgins sank 6-of-8 field goals – all from three-point land – in the 34-point triumph.

Northwest shot 60.5% from the field, which included 55.2% from three-point range. Northwest knocked in 16-of-29 three-pointers against the Mules. Northwest has drained at least 10 three-pointers in each of its last four games.

Northwest extended its defense in the second half and did not allow Central Missouri to score until a pair of free throws from Shae Wyatt with 11:18 remained on the second-half clock. UCM would not make a second-half field goal until 9:44 was left in the game.

Northwest will remain home and will take on the Lincoln Blue Tigers on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.
