The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reports a recent theft arrest. At approximately 12:00pm on January 10th 62-year-old Paule Wayne Norton of Bedford was caught in the act of taking rear wheel weights from a tractor sitting at County Peddler, 2058 Hunter Trail, in Corning. Norton was arrested for Theft in the 5th Degree. No further details were released at this time.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A state court judge has heard arguments on whether to dismiss a lawsuit challenging a state law passed last year that would block Planned Parenthood of the Heartland from receiving federal grant money for sex education courses. Judge Paul Scott is considering whether to dismiss the lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa for Planned Parenthood. It challenges the law passed on the last day of the 2019 session as a violation of free speech, due process and equal protection rights. A judge last May halted enforcement of the law until the court decides whether it’s constitutional.
OAKLAND, Iowa (AP) — A western Iowa school district will pay $4.8 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of 16-year-old girl who died in a 2017 school bus fire that also killed the bus driver. Riverside Community School District reached the settlement this week with the family of Megan Klindt. She died when the bus became stuck in a ditch, leading to a fire in the engine compartment that spread to the passenger compartment. The fire also killed 74-year-old Donnie Hendricks. An attorney for the school district had said Thursday that the settlement terms were confidential, but the Iowa Freedom of Information Council later released the details.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A man has been convicted of beating to death the 5-year-old son of his girlfriend in eastern Iowa. A jury found Tre Henderson guilty Thursday. The 28-year-old will be sentenced April 1 to life in prison without possibility of parole. Prosecutors say Ja’Shawn Bussell had 17 broken ribs, damage to internal organs and bruises from the top of his head to his ankles after Henderson beat him in April 2018. Henderson and the boy’s mother, Jacqueline Rambert, were charged with child abuse for failing to seek prompt medical attention for the boy. They’re both from Chicago and were living in Davenport when Ja’Shawn died.
PAUL HERR, 64, of Greenfield, died Friday, February 14, 2020, at the Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Celebration of Life services for PAUL HERR will be held 11-a.m. Friday, Feb. 21st, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately following the services. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

After a rough two games to start the week, the Atlantic boys basketball team needed a good outing to lift them up. They got that on Friday night with a 69-49 road win over St. Albert. Atlantic forced the Falcons in to settling for a large number of outside shots and did a great job rebounding misses to limit chances. The Trojans did a terrific job of sharing the basketball on offense and made a number of great late passes to turn a good look into a great look.
Skyler Handlos dropped in 20 points to lead the scoring for the Trojans with two others getting into double figures. Dayton Templeton finished with 14 and Nile Petersen added 13.
The Trojans improved to 8-11 on the season and have two regular season games left before the playoffs start on the 24th. The Trojans found out on Friday that their first round substate game will be played against the Harlan Cyclones at Glenwood in a 6:30 p.m. game.
St. Albert falls to 7-14 on the season and are finished with their regular season schedule. They open up their Class 1A playoff run next Thursday at home against Riverside.

EARNIE KOPASKA, 92, of Dexter, died Friday, February 14th, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services for EARNIE KOPASKA will be held 10-a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18th, at the First Presbyterian Church in Dexter. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (The Des Moines Register) — The sponsor of a halftime promotion at University of Northern Iowa basketball games has reversed course in the face of growing criticism and will now pay the full $10,000 to a contestant who competed earlier this week. A public outcry had been swelling since the Wednesday night contest.
Northern Iowa student Dalton Hinsch made a layup, a free throw and two long shots as part of the timed contest. Hinsch made the last shot from half-court just as an announcer counted down the last seconds, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Officials said Hinsch hadn’t gotten the last shot off in time.

Atlantic, IA — Officials with the Cass County Health System in Atlantic report, Dr. Edna Becht will present a program on “The 411 on URIs” (Upper Respiratory Infections), at the first session of a brand-new series, Healthy U & Baby, Too! The educational presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, February 25th from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at the Ann W. Wickman Child Development Center.

We are now expanding the same model to reach young parents at a time and in a way that’s more convenient for them. We’ll provide free dinner and childcare so that the parents can eat, relax, learn a little, and come away with good information that helps them care for their children. It’s also a great opportunity for parents to meet and get to know a few of our physicians that they may not know yet.”
Healthy U & Baby, Too! is a three-part series geared to parents with young children, and it is being held in conjunction with the support of Nishna Valley Family YMCA and Ann W. Wickman Child Development Center. The next two sessions will be held on March 17 and April 21; details will be released at a later date.
All Healthy U & Baby, Too! events are free and open to the public. Parents do not have to have their child enrolled at the Ann W. Wickman Child Development Center to attend; childcare will be provided free of charge to any family attending. Dinner will also be provided free of charge to families, but a reservation is required.
