KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs began the intake process for first-year players Monday after the NFL gave them the go-ahead along with the Houston Texans, their opponent in the season opener Sept. 10. But it could be quite a while before they get on the field for training camp. All players must test negative twice before they are admitted to the facility, then they will spend a couple of days doing the more routine physicals and getting their equipment sorted out. Veterans are due July 28, and coach Andy Reid said it could be 10 days after that before full practices begin.

UNDATED (AP) — NFL players will be tested daily for the coronavirus for at least the first two weeks of training camp per the league’s new testing protocols. The new policy was approved by the NFL and the players’ union. Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL chief medical officer, said more than one negative test is required before players initially enter the building to begin physical exams or any form of team activity. After two weeks of daily testing, if the rate of those positive tests falls below 5%, testing would go to every other day.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have placed right-hander Jakob Junis on the injured list to allow him to continue preparing for the season. He missed the first part of summer camp following a positive test for the coronavirus. The 27-year-old Junis test positive for COVID-19 during initial testing several weeks ago. The Royals said he was cleared about a week ago to return to baseball activities. Junis went 9-14 with a 5.24 ERA in 31 starts last season.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have removed a “Chop On” sign that sat near an entrance to Truist Park as the team considers its stance on fans’ tomahawk chop chant. The removal of the wooden sign came as the team changed its slogan from “Chop On” to “For The A” for the 2020 season. The team’s stance on the chant has been watched closely since last year’s NL Division Series. St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Ryan Helsley, a member of the Cherokee Nation, said he found the chant insulting. The Braves said they would continue to examine the chant after the season, and that process continues.

UNDATED (AP) — Major League Baseball is adding on-field advertising this season, both real and virtual. Allowed locations include the back of the pitcher’s mound, behind home plate, on tarps in the stands and in the grass in foul territory down the first-base lines. Teams have the choice whether to make the ads real or project them virtually during telecasts. In addition, physical ads can be put on the on-deck circle.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:35 a.m. CDT

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A police chief says investigators continue to chase leads in the disappearance of a 10-year-old Davenport girl and are still hoping to find her alive. Authorities looking for Breasia Terrell have called off an organized search in Clinton County, which began last week and included hundreds of volunteers. Davenport Police Chief Paul Sikorski says that investigators have determined their time would be better spent now following up on other leads they have developed. He says that everyone on the team wants to “find her alive” and that is their intent. Terrell disappeared on July 10 while spending the night at an apartment with her half-brother and his father.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — School districts that plan to reopen classrooms in the fall are wrestling with whether to require teachers and students to wear face mask. The issue has divided urban and rural schools and yielded widely varying guidance. The divide has also taken on political dimensions. In Iowa, Democratic-leaning cities like Des Moines and Iowa City have required masks to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Smaller, more conservative communities have left the decision to parents. Many states are calling for teachers to wear masks. Some will require masks for students. Many other states are leaving the decision to local officials.

CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) — A long-serving city councilor in eastern Iowa has resigned days after calling Black Lives Matter protesters “a bunch of criminals” at a public meeting.Tom Gill, a dentist whose tenure on the Coralville city council dates to 1987, submitted his resignation Friday. That was the same day that Mayor John Lundell issued a statement criticizing Gill for his remarks during a July 14 meeting about potential policing reforms in the city of 23,000 people.Lundell said the remarks offended him and other council members and that he’d heard from many residents who found them “very troubling and not reflective” of their concerns.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa state health officials have reported another jump in confirmed cases of coronavirus, as well as another death, in the last day, as the state continues to see a rise in hospitalizations. The state health department’s virus tracking site showed 343 cases and one death had been confirmed in the 24-hour period from Sunday to 10 a.m. Monday. The state’s total deaths since the beginning of the outbreak stood at 793 Monday, while the total number of cases reached 38,907. The site showed that as of Monday morning, 221 people were hospitalized for the virus — a number that has been slowly increasing over the last few weeks. The increasing number of cases prompted hospitals in the Des Moines area to stop allowing most visitors.

Atlantic falls short against Creston in Regional Final

Sports

July 20th, 2020 by admin

The Creston Panthers will make their 6th trip to the State Softball Tournament after notching a 6-3 win over Atlantic on Monday night. Creston got some early short hits to work in their favor and then came up big with the long ball later in the game.

The Panthers jumped on top early with a run in the 1st on an RBI single from Emma Hanson. They added two more runs in the 2nd inning on RBI singles from Sara Keeler and Gracie Hagle. Creston loaded the bases with nobody out to start that frame. The Trojans got a force out at home for the first out of the inning and then Olivia Engler prevented any more damage with two straight strikeouts to end the inning. Atlantic responded in the third with a 2 RBI double from Caroline Pellett and an RBI single from McKenzie Waters to tie the game at 3.

Creston freshman Nevaeh Randall came up with the big hit of the game in the 4th. With two down Gracie Hagle got on base with a single and then Randall stepped up and belted a 2-run shot over the right-center fence to put Creston back up 5-3. The Panthers added an insurance run in the top of the 7th and the Trojans couldn’t answer at the plate. Reagan Pellet got a bloop single with two out, but the next batter Lauren Nicholas hit into a 1-3 groundout to end the game. Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann said it was just a bit of an off night for the Trojans.

Creston improves to 13-5 with the win and will move on to the State Tournament in Fort Dodge next week. Atlantic sees another successful season end with a record of 17-2. Coach Hinzmann said it will be hard to say goodbye to a couple of great seniors in Reagan Pellett and McKenzie Waters.

Those two Trojans were a part of 135 wins for the program since they were eighth graders. The Trojans also earned their only two trips to the State Tournament in school history during that time span.
