Iowa State announces some fans will be allowed at next home football game

Sports

September 24th, 2020 by admin

Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard issued a letter to fans on Thursday stating that some fans will be allowed at the next home football game against Oklahoma on October 3rd. Pollard said the department has been closely monitoring the number of cases in the community and on campus. The improvement of those numbers has given the University the confidence they can proceed with some fans at the next game.

COVID weekly positivity results from on campus testing have drastically declined from a high of 33% on Aug. 30 to 5% on Sept. 20. The campus 10-day rolling average as of Sept. 22 has declined to 4%. Additionally, the 14-day virus positivity results from Story County testing has declined from 22% on Sept. 1 to 8% on Sept. 23.

Projected attendance has decreased from 25,000 to approximately 15,000 (less than 25% of the stadium’s 61,500-seat capacity) as many fans have opted out of their tickets.

No general tickets will be sold, fans will be assigned seats to help with ease of contact tracing, and no tailgating will be allowed. Other mitigation efforts will be followed as well including a health check at the gate and face coverings will be required.

Royals outfielder Alex Gordon to retire after season

By DAVE SKRETTA AP Sports Writer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals outfielder Alex Gordon says he will retire after the season. The player who spent his entire 14-year career with Kansas City mase the announcement Thursday. Gordon was a former first-round pick whose rollercoaster career took him from near bust to All-Star and Gold Glove winner. He enjoyed a standout career at Nebraska, where he was honored as the best amateur in baseball. While he never quite hit with the kind of average the Royals hoped he would, Gordon did through sheer grit turn himself into one of the best defensive players in the game. He helped the Royals to two World Series trips and a championship in 2015.

Judge to rule on absentee ballot lawsuit by Friday

News

September 24th, 2020 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A state court judge says he will rule before the end of the day Friday on whether to halt enforcement of a state law that prohibits county election officials from using information readily available in the voter registration database to fill in missing information on a voter’s absentee ballot request form. The law pushed through by Republican lawmakers in June has been challenged in court by two Latino advocacy groups. It requires county election officials to contact the voter by phone, email or mail to confirm missing information. Supporters say it’s a voter fraud protection measure. The League of United Latin American Citizens and Majority Forward say in their lawsuit that it’s an unfair burden and unconstitutional.
