Brownfield Ag News reporters recognized at NAFB Awards program

Three Brownfield Ag News Broadcast Council members of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB) were recognized during the awards ceremony at the organization’s annual convention held last week in Kansas City, Mo.  Ken Anderson and Julie Harker received awards for news reporting and Tom Steever received tenure recognition.

Ken Anderson, headquartered in Lincoln, Neb. received Editor’s Choice Award for Exceptional Merit from the NAFB News Service for providing accurate and timely information on a variety of issues.  The NAFB News Service is a source of news and information to farm broadcasters representing more than 1,800 radio stations nationwide.

Julie Harker, based in Jefferson City, Mo. received third Place in the NAFB Newscast Awards.  Each year more than 140 NAFB Broadcast Council members throughout the United States are asked to participate in the award process.  Broadcasters are required to send a produced newscast that aired on a specific day chosen by the NAFB and a CD is compiled from all the entries.  The Awards Committee assembles a panel of farmers to select the winning newscasts.

Tom Steever received a tenure award for 35 years as a Broadcast Council member of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting.  Tom will serve as President of NAFB in 2012.

Brownfield, founded in 1972, includes Brownfield Ag News radio network and Brownfieldagnews.com.  Brownfield provides news, markets, weather, event coverage and feature and commentary programming relevant to those who live and work on farms and in rural communities in the United States, and to those with an interest in U.S. food and fiber production.

Brownfield’s team of ten award-winning agricultural journalists, all Broadcast Council members of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting, along with an ag meteorologist, Washington D.C. policy analyst and two market analysts can be heard daily on AM 1220 KJAN.

Sports

November 15th, 2011 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State will face by far its biggest test yet on Friday night when it hosts second-ranked Oklahoma State in a rare nationally televised game for the Cyclones.  Oklahoma State is averaging nearly 52 points a game, which ranks second in the nation, and last week it scored 49 points in the first half of a 66-6 drubbing of Texas Tech.  Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads says the Cowboys offense might be the best he’s seen in his coaching career. Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden leads the Cowboys with 3,635 yards passing and 31 touchdowns.

Chiefs’ Cassel Could Miss Season with Hand Injury

November 15th, 2011 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel could miss the remainder of the season after sustaining what coach Todd Haley is calling a “significant” injury to his throwing hand.  Cassel hurt his right hand near the end of the Chiefs’ 17-10 loss to Denver on Sunday. The injury appeared to occur when Cassel was sacked by Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller, though Haley wasn’t sure if it was the hit or the way Cassel landed on the turf that caused it.  Haley refused to say whether the team would put the former Pro Bowl quarterback on injured reserve. But he did say “it’s a possibility” when asked whether he’d miss the rest of the season.  Tyler Palko is expected to start Monday night at New England.

Iowa State Backup Gary Will Face Robbery Charge

Sports

November 15th, 2011 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Police say robbery charges are pending for Iowa State backup wide receiver Albert Gary following a June incident.  University police Capt. Aaron Delashmutt says Gary hasn’t been formally charged with robbery. Officials have filed paperwork with the court system and are awaiting final approval.  Delashmutt says more information about the case should be available Tuesday.  Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads announced Monday that Gary had been suspended for three games because of the incident. Rhoads says Gary will be available for Friday night’s game against No. 2 Oklahoma State.  Gary, a 22-year-old redshirt sophomore from Ocala, Fla., wasn’t made available to reporters Monday. He has seven catches for 76 yards this season.
