Wainwright throws 5 sharp innings, Cards top Miami 2-1 Friday

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched five shutout innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Miami 2-1 on Friday, overcoming Jose Reyes’ first home run for the Marlins. Wainwright, who missed last season following elbow surgery, allowed three hits and struck out five. He has given up just an unearned run in 14 innings this spring. Marlins starter Carlos Zambrano looked rusty, allowing two runs and five hits, including three doubles, in 4 1-3 innings. He walked four and struck out one. The Cardinals announced that ace Chris Carpenter has nerve irritation that has led to weakness in his pitching shoulder. There is no timetable yet for his return to the mound. The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner was evaluated in St. Louis this week.

Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter out indefinitely

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Chris Carpenter has nerve irritation that has caused weakness in his pitching shoulder and the St. Louis Cardinals’ ace will be sidelined indefinitely. The Cardinals made the announcement Friday, after Carpenter was evaluated in St. Louis this week. The team says there is no new nerve injury and the cervical disc injury that occurred earlier in spring training is a “non-issue.” The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner is expected back in camp by Monday, but there is no timetable for his return to the mound. Carpenter, who turns 37 next month, pitched the Cardinals to World Series championships in 2006 and 2011. The right-hander was 11-9 with a 3.45 ERA last year, leading the NL in innings (237 1-3) and starts (34). He threw 36 more innings in the postseason, going 4-0 with a 3.25 ERA in six starts.

Atlantic School Board to act on employee termination, Tuesday

The Atlantic Community School District’s Board of Education will hold two sessions Tuesday, March 27th, in the High School Media Center. The first session begins at 6:45-p.m. Following the standard roll call procedure and approval of the agenda, the Board will move into a closed session. When they return to an open session, the board will act on approving a recommendation for termination of employment. No other details are available with regard to the affected employee.

At 7:30-p.m., the Board will hold a work session, during which they will discuss the Atlantic Middle School Building Leadership Team (BLT), and matters pertaining to the Super Board meeting scheduled to take place March 29th.

Home and Garden Show this weekend in Harlan

Vendors from all around the area will be in Harlan this weekend, for the 26th annual “Home, Garden and Living Show.” In fact, over 40 vendors are expected to bring their wares for your garden, home, and lifestyle. The theme for this year’s event, is “Red, White and Blue.” The show at the Veteran’s Auditorium in Harlan is sponsored by The Harlan Newspapers. The papers’ Al Hazelton says one thing that’s changed over the years is how much technology is coming to the show.

 He says there’ll be communications and energy saving exhibits, computers and related peripherals, and more. Other vendors will have appliances, health, beauty and landscaping products on display. Anyone attending the event will register for great prizes including a TV, outdoor grill and a giant tool cabinet. Hazelton says if you are thinking the Home, Garden and Living show is for adults only, think again. He says the show appeals to all ages. The newspaper is giving away prizes for kids, and most of the exhibitors have drawings for their own giveaways. 

The Home, Garden and Living show begins Saturday evening. Hazelton says admission to the show is free. The hours are from 5-to 8:30-p.m. Saturday, and from Noon- to 4-pm Sunday.

BYRON GLENN MARTIN, 67, of Avoca died Thursday, March 22nd at his home.  Funeral services for Byron Glenn Martin will be held on Monday, March 26th at 1:30 pm in the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca.

No public visitation will be held, but friends and family are welcome to stop by the house at 606 North Chestnut St. in Avoca.

Burial in the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.

Neb. police ID Iowan suspected in stabbing

LA VISTA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of an Iowa man suspected of stabbing his former girlfriend and her stepmother in the Omaha suburb of La Vista. La Vista Police Chief Bob Lausten identified the man as 24-year-old Brandon Hendon, of Essex, Iowa. Hendon faces two counts of attempted murder, burglary and weapons charges. Hendon is accused of stabbing 18-year-old Jaimee Kirsch and 31-year-old Jessica Walker a little after 3:30 a.m. Friday. Lausten says they have been reported in stable condition at Creighton University Medical Center and are expected to survive their wounds.

Earlier Friday, La Vista Police Capt. Kevin Pokorny said family members had talked to officers on Thursday evening, sharing concerns about the younger woman’s ex-boyfriend. Hendon was arrested in Plattsmouth, which is 13 miles south-southeast of La Vista.

Powerhouse Lady Vols to Face Unheralded Kansas in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Pat Summitt and her Tennessee Lady Vols’ NCAA tournament history is staggering. For Kansas, it’s spotty at best.

Yet the Lady Vols don’t think the Jayhawks will be weighed down by all those suggesting they’re in for a short stay in Des Moines.

Saturday’s regional semifinals between powerhouse Tennessee (26-8) and unheralded Kansas (21-12) looks like a classic mismatch.

The 11th-seeded Jayhawks are in the third round for the first time in 14 years. The second-seeded Lady Vols have made it at least this far every year but one since the tournament’s inception in 1982 and have advanced to the regional finals 24 times.

But Tennessee associate head coach Holly Warlick says the underdog Jayhawks are playing with energy, heart and confidence.

Railey, Sledge to Leave Cyclone Hoops Team

AMES, Iowa- Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg confirmed Friday that sophomore Jordan Railey and freshman Tavon Sledge will transfer.  Both have asked for and been granted their full release to transfer to other schools.

“We certainly appreciate the work and effort Jordan and Tavon have given our program,” Hoiberg said. “It basically boiled down to playing time for both of them. I had great conversations with Jordan and Tavon after the season ended and we mutually agreed that their chances for increased playing time would be at another school. Jordan and Tavon are great kids and we will do everything we can to assist them finding the right fit.”

Railey, a 6-10 center from Beaverton, Ore., appeared in 13 games in 2011-12, averaging 0.5 points and 0.7 rebounds. A native of Spring Valley, N.Y., Sledge played in eight games, averaging 1.0 points.
