USDA to begin 4-week general CRP signup May 20

Ag/Outdoor

February 17th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture will open a four-week general signup for the Conservation Reserve Program on May 20th.  Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack made the announcement Saturday at the National Pheasant Fest and Quail Classic in Minneapolis. He says the CRP was vital in later summer’s drought. He says it protected sensitive land from erosion, while emergency haying and grazing on CRP lands provided critical livestock feed and forage.

Around 27 million acres are enrolled in the CRP, a voluntary program that pays farmers to keep environmentally sensitive land out of production, typically for 10 to 15 years. The goals are to improve water quality, control erosion and enhance wildlife habitat. Contracts on about 3.3 million acres expire September 30th.

Cardinals’ Jaime Garcia says shoulder healthy

Sports

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – With ace Chris Carpenter sidelined, possibly for the season, the St. Louis Cardinals are hoping for more wins and innings from Jaime Garcia.  The 26-year-old left-hander had reconstructive elbow surgery in September 2008, then returned in 2010, went 13-8 and finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting.

After going 13-7 in 2011 and helping the Cardinals win the World Series, Garcia slumped to a 7-7 record in just 20 starts last year. He was sidelined between June 5 and Aug. 19 because of a strained left shoulder, then lasted just two innings in Game 2 of the NL division series against Washington and was taken off the roster because of a strained rotator cuff and inflammation.

Manager Mike Matheny says Garcia looks great so far this spring.

Iowa outscored Minnesota 37-10 in a 20-minute stretch spanning the halves, pulling ahead 42-31 with 15:14 left. Eric May’s 3 with 8:50 left made it 53-37 Iowa, and a game that started off as a Minnesota rout became a Hawkeyes blowout.

Austin Hollins had 14 points for the Gophers (18-8, 6-7), who’ve lost three of four and are now tied with Iowa in the league standings.
