The Atlantic Fire Department and Atlantic Police responded to a report of smoke in the hallway at the Walnut Hill Terrace Apartments (1310 E. 10th Street) this (Tuesday) afternoon. Officers with the Atlantic P-D were first on the scene and confirmed there was smoke in the hallway, but it was the result of food burning in a cooking utensil, and there was no actual fire. The call came in at 4:22-p.m. The hallway was ventilated and fire units returned to station less than 10-minutes later. There were no injuries.

This (Tuesday) morning, officers with the Red Oak Police Department were called to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of north 5th Street and east Coolbaugh Street. Upon arrival the officers investigated the scene and determined that 39-year old Tanya Michelle Danick of Red Oak was traveling eastbound on Coolbaugh Street while 86-year old Mary Ellen Rhodes of Red Oak was traveling north on 5th Street. Rhodes stopped her 1984 Buick Century at the stop sign and then proceeded into the intersection without yielding to Danick’s 2005 Chrysler which then struck the left rear quarter panel of Rhodes’s vehicle. The estimated damage to Rhodes’s vehicle was $900 and the estimated damage to Danick’s vehicle was $800. There were no injuries.

SMITHLAND, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a man has been hospitalized after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a house in western Iowa. The Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office says the 40-year-old man from Maquoketa crashed the car into a house in Smithland early Tuesday morning. Residents of the home were not hurt.

Maj. Greg Stallman says the car hit a utility pole and an embankment before going into the air. It hit the house above a first-floor window and just below a second-story window. The Sioux City Journal reports the driver, whose name has not been released, was flown to a nearby hospital. His condition was not available.

Earlier today (Tuesday), the Atlantic Police Department arrested 34-year old Kevin Alan Jensen of Atlantic on a valid Red Oak Police Department warrant for prohibited acts, a class C Felony. Jensen was transported from Atlantic to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center by Red Oak Police Officers. He is now being held on $10,000 cash bond.

There could be a challenge for the At Large seat on the Atlantic City Council. City Clerk Deb Field tells KJAN News Bob Cord filed nomination papers today (Tuesday), in advance of the September 19^th deadline for the November 5^th City Elections. Current At Large City Councilman Steve Livengood has not yet filed papers for re-election.

Fifth Ward Councilman Shawn Shouse has also not filed papers for re-election as of today (Tuesdsay). On Monday, Mayor Dave Jones and Ward 2 Councilperson Kathy Somers filed their papers for re-election.
