State Fire Marshal Raymond Reynolds has ordered a ban on open burning in Audubon County, effective at Noon today (Sat., Aug. 31st).burn ban No one is allowed to engage in open burning in Audubon County, except as specifically permitted by Iowa Code, or until Audubon Fire Chief John Ballou (who represents each fire department in the County), notifies the Fire Marshal that conditions have improved, and no longer threatens life or property.

Chiefs rookie Bray turns head in preseason finale

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Bray knows that he’s probably not going to get a whole lot of snaps in a game the rest of the year as the Kansas City Chiefs’ third-string quarterback. He made the most of the ones he got in their preseason finale Thursday night. Bray threw for 169 yards and three touchdowns as the Chiefs sat their starters in a 30-8 victory over the Green Bay Packers. He was mostly going against fellow third-teamers on the Packers defense, but the performance was still impressive enough to leave Kansas City buzzing.

Especially considering Bray was passed over by all 32 teams in the NFL draft. He signed with the Chiefs as a free agent, and has already locked up the No. 3 job behind Alex Smith and Chase Daniel.

Iowa hosts Northern Illinois in key opener

Sports

August 31st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s one-point win over Northern Illinois in last season’s opener felt like an escape for the Hawkeyes. Iowa would view a similar result today (Saturday) in Iowa City, as a sign of progress.

Nearly everything about these programs has changed in the 12 months since they last met. The Hawkeyes finished last season with a six-game losing streak, while Northern Illinois responded with 12 straight wins, a Mid-American Conference title and a berth in the Orange Bowl.

The Huskies enter Kinnick Stadium with a new coach in Rod Carey. But the expectations for Northern Illinois remain high — and hardly anyone would be shocked if the Huskies finish Iowa off in the rematch.
