Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press…

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A new survey of Iowa farmers says renting an acre of land to grow crops costs a state average of $255 an acre. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that’s an increase of $20 an acre from a year ago and is the highest since the department began compiling comparable records in 2008. Cash rent paid for pasture in Iowa, at $49 per acre, was up $3 from 2012.

MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) — In a sign of increasing drought, the Farm Service Agency has authorized emergency grazing on land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program in Muscatine County. The Muscatine Journal reports that the emergency authorization runs until September 30th. Those interested in emergency grazing of Conservation Reserve Program acres must first get approval from the Farm Service Agency.

ATLANTIC, Iowa (AP) — Residents of Atlantic in southwest Iowa might find fall’s hottest color to be hunter orange. The Daily Nonpareil in Council Bluffs reports that the Atlantic City Council passed an ordinance this week allowing deer hunting within city limits. It’s hoped the change will help reduce the exploding deer population within the town’s borders. Hunting packets and applications are available at the Atlantic Police Department.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — David Johnson eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the eighth consecutive game and Northern Iowa’s offense was too much for Drake in a 45-14 win on Saturday night. Northern Iowa used 31 first-half points to top Drake in Cedar Falls.

Wainwright moves Cards into first in NL Central

Sports

September 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright bounced back from back-to-back sub-par outings with seven shutout innings and David Freese homered to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.

The victory moved the Cardinals into first place, a half-game ahead of the Pirates in the NL Central with their third win in four games. Pittsburgh has lost four of six including the first two of the three-game set. The Pirates remain stuck on 81 wins, one shy of assuring them a winning record for the first time since they went 96-66 in 1992.

Wainwright (16-9) had given up 15 earned runs over his previous two starts, both against Cincinnati. He allowed a career-high nine runs in two innings of a 10-0 loss Aug. 28. But he regained his form against the Pirates allowing just two hits.

Jeff Locke (9-5) allowed three runs on three hits over five innings.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — David Johnson eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the eighth consecutive game and Northern Iowa’s offense was too much for Drake in a 45-14 win on Saturday night. Northern Iowa (2-0) used 31 first-half points and a stingy defense to defeat Drake (0-2) a week after opening the season with a road victory against Iowa State. Johnson scored for the 11th consecutive game, producing 143 yards rushing and one touchdown on a 65-yard scamper to lead a balanced offensive attack for the Panthers.

Six Northern Iowa players scored a touchdown, including linebacker Jake Farley who recovered a fumble and returned it 20 yards to open the scoring for the Panthers. The Northern Iowa defense held Drake to 167 yards of total offense and the Bulldogs were just 1 of 16 on third-down conversions. Andy Rice passed for 121 yards and one touchdown to lead Drake.

Emergency haying extended for Cass, Audubon & Guthrie Counties

Ag/Outdoor, News

September 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Audubon county FSA office reports emergency haying on CRP acres has been extended until September 20th. Denny Heflin, FSA Director, says  “Farmers can come into their FSA office after they get the work completed, they just need to remember when they get it done they have to go in and certify it and agree to the terms and conditions. The payment reduction is still the same 10% and bales have to be removed within ten days after completing the harvest.”

The measure came about because of the extended period of dry weather. The emergency haying on CRP acres includes Audubon, Guthrie, and Cass Counties.
