Chiefs Getting Off to Fast Starts this Season

Sports

September 24th, 2013 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are all about fast starts these days.

They’ve started fast in games, taking the lead in the first quarter of each of them, and carrying that advantage into halftime twice. And they’ve started fast on the season, beating the Jaguars, Cowboys and Eagles to surpass their win total from all of last year.

While that may seem like something to scoff about so early in the season, consider that Kansas City never led a game in regulation until Week 9 a year ago.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid insisted that he’d rather score most than first, but he also said there’s value in getting on the board early. It helps build confidence while also allowing a team to settle in for the rest of the game.

Iowa GOP Moves Convention to June

News

September 24th, 2013 by admin

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Republican State Central Committee has voted to hold its state convention in June, a month earlier than previously scheduled.

The Des Moines Register reports  the committee voted Monday to hold the convention June 14 after initially voting to hold the event in July.

The decision to change the date came after complaints that a July convention could delay the selection of a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, giving an edge to the Democrats. A number of Republicans are seeking the GOP Senate nomination while Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley has no competition for his party’s nomination.

The committee also agreed to hold the 2014 caucuses on Jan. 21, the same date the Democrats have agreed to.

All three teams are headed to the postseason. The Reds and Pirates both won Monday night, clinching at least a wild-card berth when Washington lost.

St. Louis secured no worse than a wild card on Sunday.
